Jen Shah, ‘Real Housewives’ star, sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for fraud

Jen Shah, star of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City , has been sentencedto 6 and half years in prison for fraud. She’ll be subject to five years ofsupervised release when she’s free. It’s a harsher sentence than the three-year term the 49-year-old Bravo star was seeking. Shah pleaded guilty for herrole in a nationwide telemarketing scheme that targeted the elderly andvulnerable.

“Jen Shah deeply regrets the mistakes that she has made and is profoundlysorry to the people she has hurt. Jen has faith in our justice system, understands that anyone who breaks the law will be punished, and accepts thissentence as just,” Shah’s lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, tells Yahoo Entertainment ina statement. “Jen will pay her debt to society and when she is a free womanagain, she vows to pay her debt to the victims harmed by her mistakes.”

Shah sobbed in a New York courthouse on Friday before she learned her fate. She apologized for hurting innocent people, adding that she’s doing all shecan to earn restitution for the victims. The reality star’s husband, CoachSharrieff Shah, and the couple’s two sons, Sharrieff Shah Jr., 28, and Omar,19, were in attendance. All three wrote letters to the judge asking forleniency.

Before delivering the 78-month sentence, US District Court Judge Sidney Steinmade it clear Shah’s persona on RHOSLC was not used against her in hisdecision. Shah must surrender to prison on Feb. 17, 2023.

In July, Shah pleaded guilty to one **** count of conspiracy to commit wirefraud. The government claims she and her co-conspirators victimized “thousandsof innocent people.” The count carried a maximum sentence of 30 years inprison, but her plea deal with federal prosecutors called for a sentence ofanywhere between 11 to 14 years in prison. Per the agreement, Shah will alsoforfeit $6.5 million and pay restitution up to $9.5 million. The JusticeDepartment requested 10 years behind bars.

When RHOSLC premiered in 2020, Shah immediately became a fan favorite. Shetouted her lavish lifestyle and over-the-top designer wardrobe, as most_Housewives_ do, but instead of bragging about her rich husband, Shah boastedhow she was the moneymaker.

“What I’ve done for the last 20 years is direct response marketing. I makemillions,” Shah said in a 2019 confessional interview, that clearly did notage well. “Hey, you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do for money. I’m like theWizard of Oz.”

Shah was arrested in March 2021 and charged with conspiracy to commit wirefraud in connection with telemarketing and conspiracy to commit moneylaundering. Prosecutors said Shah and her associates “generated and sold ‘leadlists’ of innocent individuals for other members of their scheme to repeatedlyscam.” The operation supposedly ran from 2012 up until her arrest. Shahpleaded not guilty.

Cameras were rolling when federal prosecutors stormed a van in Utah in anattempt to arrest Shah. The reality star’s legal woes have been a majorstoryline on the second and third season of the show. For over a year, viewerssaw Shah vehemently maintain her innocence, often through tears — or whilescreaming at her co-stars. Her tagline on the show was, “The only thing I’mguilty of is being Shah-mazing.” She sold “Justice for Jen” merchandise. (Incourt on Friday, Shah claimed proceeds will go to the victims.) Viewers werestunned when she changed her plea last year after filming of the show’s thirdseason wrapped.

Prosecutors called Shah “the most culpable person charged in this case” aheadof the hearing, according to documents obtained by Yahoo.

“At the defendant’s direction, victims were defrauded over and over againuntil they had nothing left. She and her co-conspirators persisted in theirconduct until the victims’ bank accounts were empty, their credit cards wereat their limits, and there was nothing more to take,” the government wrote intheir sentencing memorandum.

The document contained multiple victim impact statements from some of thepeople Shah and her associates defrauded. A widow in her mid-70s lost half ofher life savings to false business promises. The victim dreams “of a betterretirement and life,” which was “taken away” when she was coerced to give hermoney away “for false promises.” Another victim, who has serious healthconditions, ultimately “became homeless” after handing over money for businessopportunities that never materialized. The government said Shah was directlyinvolved in scamming these people.

In a letter to the judge ahead of sentencing, Shah wrote, “The terriblebusiness decisions I made and professional relationships I developed stemmedfrom some personal painful experiences that I was going through in my life.”

Lawyers for Shah said she was involved in both legitimate and fraudulent partsof the business, but maintained she was not the “mastermind” behind the schemeand did not communicate with the victims. They also blamed heavy editing onthe “semi-scripted” reality show for making her seem “intransigent, defiantand often even unrepentant about her actions here. Nothing could be furtherfrom the truth. Just as Jen Shah has never been a ‘housewife, ‘ little else isreal about her person and caricature as portrayed by the editors of RHOSLC.”

Shah’s husband pleaded for leniency in a letter to the court ahead ofsentencing. He partially blamed himself for her actions and said his busy workschedule as University of Utah’s assistant football coach caused her to “makecatastrophically bad business decisions and develop relationships with awfulpeople.” None of Shah’s RHOSLC co-stars — Lisa Barlow, Heather Gay, MeredithMarks or Whitney Rose — were among the dozen people to write letters to the

‘The ancestor’ shows that we live in a golden age for Dutch series ★★★☆☆

It is an irresistible opening sentence that will have set many a filmmaker onfire: ‘My first contact with the secrets that would rule my life was thediscovery I made one lost afternoon in the attic of our house in Voorburg. ‘The life discussed here is that of the journalist Alexander Münninghoff(1944-2020), whose family history ( The ancestor ) takes place in manycountries and covers much of the fraught history of the 20th century. Youcould call Diederik van Rooijen’s eight-part series of the same name a longrun-up to that first sentence.

The ancestor ties in nicely with our earlier observation that we live in anew golden age for Dutch series, in which ambitions and budget are betteraligned than was the case in the past. This new Dutch wave does much betterjustice to the qualities of makers and actors.

The find referred to in the first sentence is a German military helmet with aswastika on it, a souvenir of Münninghoff’s father, who was a member of the SSas a young man and fought on the Eastern Front, and who also maintained theatmosphere after the war. of the comrades could not let go. In _The ancestor_Münninghof goes in search of the choices made in his family, going back threegenerations, and how they continue to influence today.

The biggest intervention Van Rooijen has made to be able to tell the events isto let go of the chronology. The leading perspective is that of the youngMünninghof (Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen) who falls in love with Ellen(Sallie Harmsen) in the late 1960s, thereby also drawing a free-spiritedoutsider’s view into his own family history. Because Ellen is the first tostart asking questions about Alexander’s father, especially after finding somebadly hidden Nazi memorabilia.

The family story begins after World War I in Latvia, where a Dutch businessman(Gijs Scholten van Aschat) is married to a Russian countess of Baltic-Germandescent, a mix of nationalities and loyalties that makes the run-up to WorldWar II extremely complicated for the family. Especially when their son, partlyout of resentment against his domineering father (leave that to Scholten vanAschat), joins the SS and leaves for the Eastern Front to fight the hatedBolsheviks.

Van Rooijen uses the flashbacks as the driving force behind his story, butdeals with them rather lavishly. Whether that works is partly a matter oftaste. It takes a few episodes to get used to the unbridled style, where webounce back and forth between many time slots (flashbacks within flashbacks!),also getting used to the fact that Alexander’s father in his youngerincarnation is played by Robert de Hoog and later, in a beautiful role, byMarcel Hensema, as a man who cannot let go of the past.

Van Rooijen, who shows himself to be a worthy successor to Paul Verhoeven withthe visual flair and the grand gestures, puts up quite a few directional signsto explain the complex map of The ancestor clear, from different colorpalettes to an overly emphatic soundtrack. Sometimes you wish the foot was alittle more off the throttle, to give this incredible family chronicle morebreathing room.

Anne Heche’s son Homer Laffoon is speaking out ahead of the posthumous releaseof her memoir.

Homer, who was named the general administrator of her estate after a courtbattle with her ex James Tupper, used his mother’s Instagram to share amessage to her fans about Call Me Ann , which will be published Jan. 24.

“Homer here,” the 20-year-old began. “Never imagined I’d find myselfresponsible for mom’s IG account, but here we are.”

He first thanked fans for “the amount of love, care and support” they’ve shownsince Heche died after a fiery car crash in Los Angeles in August. He saidit’s been overwhelming and blessedly received. One day at a time is workingfor me as I’m sure the healing journey will be a long one. Your good thoughtsand well wishes will continue to comfort me on my path.

Homer, the son of Heche and her ex-husband Coley Laffoon, went on to say hehas a responsibility to share with his mom’s community that the manuscript forher second book was completed at the time of her death and it will bepublished in just in two weeks. There will be a special launch event at Barnes& Noble at the Grove in LA, with Heche’s podcast co-host Heather Duffy, theday the book goes on sale.

“The book is the product of mom’s further efforts to share her story and tohelp others where she could,” he wrote. ” Call Me Ann is the result and Iknow she was excited to share with the world. So, mom, here I am sharing itwith the community you created, may it flourish and take on a life of it’sown, as you would have wanted.”

Homer said he doesn’t plan on using Heche’s Instagram “too often” in thefuture, “but know she loved her fans, loved writing (she wrote endlessly) andit would not feel right not to reach out at a time like this. “

He signed off his post like his mother used to, writing, “Peace and love,Homer.”

Call Me Ann is a sequel to Heche’s 2001 memoir, Call Me Crazy and is abouther rise to fame — with personal anecdotes about her _Six Days, Seven Nights_co-star Harrison Ford becoming her mentor, plus her headline-making romancewith Ellen DeGeneres and encounter with Harvey Weinstein — as well as aboutthe sexual abuse she endured as a child. It’s described as “part memoir andpart self-acceptance workbook,” with the stories “interwoven with poems, prompts, and exercises that got Anne through tough times.”

Homer fought his mom’s ex and Men in Trees star Tupper for legal control ofher estate after Heche died without a will in August.

He was granted permission by the court to “take possession of all the personalproperty of the estate of the decedent and preserve it from damage, waste, andinjury.” He was also granted the power to protect the interests of Heche in”the publication agreement” of her book. He’ll also be responsible fordefending lawsuits and other legal proceedings against Heche, including theone filed by the woman whose home was destroyed in the car crash that killedthe Emmy winner.

Tupper, who shared 13-year-old son Atlas with Heche, objected to Homeroverseeing the estate. He claimed Heche asked him to be the executor more thana decade earlier and prior to their 2018 breakup. In court, Tupper claimedHomer was not capable of managing his late mother’s affairs, listing a varietyof reasons. He also claimed Homer was acting “in a hostile manner” toward hishalf-brother Atlas and refusing “to communicate with him or hisrepresentatives at all.” However, Homer prevailed in November.

Heche died after being involved in a car crash on Aug. 5, when her Mini Cooperslammed into a house and caught on fire, leaving her trapped in the vehiclefor 30 minutes. Heche was comatose for days before the state of Californiadeclared that she was legally dead on Aug. 12. On Aug. 14, she was taken offlife support. She died primarily from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, according to the medical examiner.

Despite initial reports, Heche wasn’t drunk or high when she crashed her car.A toxicology report based on blood and urine samples showed evidence that shehad previously used cocaine and cannabis, but not at the time of the accident. The fentanyl found in Heche’s urine was administered by the hospital for pain

Tom Hanks calls Hollywood a ‘family business’ amid ongoing ‘fake baby’ debate

It looks like “America’s Dad” Tom Hanks is taking a stand as a proud “NepoDad.” In a new interview with the British newspaper, The Sun the Oscarwinning star of castaway and Captain Phillips addressed the fact that allfour of his adult children are part of the entertainment industry. “Look, thisis a family business,” Hanks remarked during an interview about his latestfilm, A Man Called Otto , in which his younger son, Truman Hanks, plays ayounger version of his character in flashbacks. “This is what we’ve been doingforever … it’s what all our kids grew up in.”

“If we were a plumbing supply business or if we ran the florist shop down thestreet, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if itwere just inventory at the end of the year,” Hanks continued. “The thing thatdoesn’t change — no matter what your last name is — is whether it works ornot.”

Hanks’s comments follow a blockbuster New York magazine story devoted to> the “nepo baby” conversation that’s playing out both in and outside of> Hollywood as a plethora of celebrity offspring are pursuing their own> careers as actors and filmmakers. It’s a debate that sits at the nexus of> privilege and opportunity, and has already generated a wide variety of> reactions from a wide variety of “nepo babies,” from Kate Hudson and Allison> Williams to Jamie Lee Curtis and Lily-Rose Depp.

Speaking with Yahoo Entertainment last year, Schuyler Fisk and Jake Hoffman —whose famous parents are Sissy Spacek and Dustin Hoffman respectively —addressed the subject as well. “For me, the biggest advantage was growing uparound movies sets, and that environment where we saw our parents working andpassionately invested in their projects,” Fisk said. “I never really thoughtabout the negatives until I started doing projects. Obviously people areinterested about what you’re going to be like based on your parents, so theywere like: ‘Aren’t you worried about being compared to your mom? ‘ And Ithought, ‘Maybe I am now, because everyone else is!'”

“A lot of people assume that being the child of somebody well-known means youwon’t have that dilemma, and that’s half-true,” Hoffman added. “Ultimately, Ithink it’s a disadvantage, not an advantage or at least it was for me. Iwasn’t a prodigy and I had to learn that getting into rooms before you’reready doesn’t really help you.”

In the case of the extended Hanks family, Tom Hanks has two children — Colin,45 and Elizabeth, 40 — with his first wife, Samantha Lewes (who died in 2002),and two children, Chet, 32, and Truman, 27, with current spouse, Rita Wilson.Colin and Elizabeth made their first onscreen appearances when they were stillyoung, and while Colin continues to act, his sister balances occasionalperformances with a career as an author and journalist. Meanwhile, Chet hasfamously pursued a music career, while also appearing in TV shows like_Empire_ and Shameless and Truman has held various crew positions on suchmovies as Black Widow and West Side Story directed by his father’sfrequent collaborator, Steven Spielberg.

“They’re all very creative, and they’re all involved in some brand ofstorytelling,” Hanks told The Sun about his children’s various creativepursuits, emphasizing that their last name alone isn’t enough to guaranteesuccess. “That’s the issue anytime any of us go off and try to tell a freshstory or create something that has a beginning, a middle and an end. Itdoesn’t matter what our last names are: we have to do the work in order tomake that a true and authentic experience for the audience. And that’s a muchbigger task than worrying about whether anyone’s going to try to scathe us ornot.”

Billy Bush Caught Making Crude Sex Joke About Kendall Jenner on Hot Mic

More than six years after his career was derailed by his involvement inTrump’s infamous Access Hollywood tapes, Additional anchor Billy Bush hasbeen caught in another hot mic moment making crass and sexually demeaningremarks.

In a video clip provided exclusively to The Daily Beast, Bush joked on-setduring a taping of Additional about Kendall Jenner’s model Toy Story-inspired Halloween costume and her attractiveness in the outfit.

“Kendall goes as Jessie and, believe me, there were a lot of woodies,” Bushsaid during the Oct. 31 taping, eliciting laughter from several productionstaffers in the room. (The Daily Beast is publishing only the audio of theincident in order to protect the anonymity of its source.)

Bush made the objectifying comment while standing in front of a large wallscreen plastered with images of female celebrities dressed in provocativeHalloween garb. Featured at the center was Jenner, the second-youngest of thefamed Kardashian/Jenner sisters, dressed up as Jessie, the free-spiritedcowgirl from the immensely popular Pixar franchise.

After looking at Jenner’s photo on the screen, Bush asked his production crewfor the name of the character. An off-screen voice informed him that the nameis Jessie, prompting Bush to toss out his crude sexual remark referencing thename of the character’s love interest, Woody, the lead protagonist of ToyStory.

“As with many forms of production in the entertainment industry, the show’screative process allows the flexibility to try different jokes and banter,” arepresentative for Telepictures, the show’s production company, said in astatement. “In the end, some material lands on the cutting room floor, including remarks that may be too edgy to air on broadcast television.” Repsfor Jenner did not respond to requests for comment.

Notably, in the final segment that aired on Oct. 31, Bush was a bit moredemure when it came to discussing female celebrities’ physical appearances. While reporting on Jenner’s costume, the Additional host only went so far asto remark that “it’s going to be hard to see Toy Story the same way everagain.”

Additional tapes its episodes with roughly 25 people present, our source> relayed. Behind the set’s monitors are cubicles where the tabloid TV show’s> staffers sit. Along with Bush and other hosts on the set there are normally> two camera operators, hair-and-makeup staff, and production assistants> present. During taping, everyone in the newsroom can hear what Bush is> saying on-stage, the source claimed.

Bush, of course, has been down this road before. Just weeks before the 2016presidential election, The Washington Post released damning 2005 tapes ofBush and Donald Trump in an obscene and sexually charged conversation.

Before filming a segment for Access Hollywood , which Bush hosted at thetime, Trump joked on a hot mic about sexually assaulting women. With the pairaboard the program’s promotional bus, Trump lamented his inability to seduceone of Bush’s colleagues, later identified as former Access Hollywood hostNancy O’Dell.

“I did try and fuck her. She was married,” Trump said as Bush could be heardgiggling. “I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there. And she wasmarried… Then all of a sudden I see her, she’s now got the big phony tits andeverything. She’s totally changed her look.”

Bush—a first cousin of former President George W. Bush—and the futurepresident then prepared to exit the bus when they spotted Days of Our Lives_actress Arianne Zucker, who was there to film the segment alongside Trump.(The then- _Celebrity Apprentice host was promoting his cameo appearance onthe daytime soap opera.)

“Sheesh, your girl’s hot as shit!” Bush exclaimed, essentially playing wingmanto Trump. “Yes! The Donald has scored! Whoa, my man. You gotta look at her…Give her the thumbs up. You gotta give the thumbs up… Oh my God!”

Trump, in an infamous moment that has been replayed countless times, asked forTic Tac breath mints “just in case I start kissing her,” before adding: “Whenyou’re a star, they let you do it.”

After Bush agreed that meant “anything you want,” Trump declared to laughter:“Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.”

While Trump survived the fallout over the footage and shockingly defeatedHillary Clinton for the presidency weeks later, the same could not be said forBush, who was quickly met with intense public criticism for his enabling ofthe sexist and Boorish “locker room talk.”

‘Extra’ Boss Runs Show Like ‘Mafia,’ ‘Threatened’ Mario Lopez

Just days after the tapes leaked, NBC suspended Bush as co-anchor of the thirdhour of the Today show—two months after he got the job. He was then oustedfrom the network a week later. (Bush, meanwhile, reportedly argued at the timethat NBC bosses “had no problem” with his previous off-color remarks aboutwomen.)

Bush went on a public apology tour in 2017 and refuted Trump’s laughable claimthat he wasn’t on the tape before finding his way back to tabloid TV in 2019when he replaced Mario Lopez as the host of Additional. (Lopezcoincidentally jumped over to Access Hollywood of all places.)

Since then, Bush has largely steered clear of negative headlines, even as hisshow has dealt with a heavy dose of drama behind the scenes along withconcerns about its very existence.

After it was announced that he’d been named the new Additional anchor, Bushspoke with The Daily Beast and expressed contrition for his conduct in the_Access Hollywood_ tape. He insisted the experience made him a better man. “Ifelt the same things [as his detractors] when I watched that,” he said inSeptember 2019. “It was a gut-punch, because I didn’t like what I saw. It’s asnapshot. It’s not the whole man… It was a bad moment in life. And I owned itand paid heavily for it.”

Bush added: “But I think I’m an improved person, because that’s what adversitydoes to a human being. These are character-building moments… I have extractedthe good out of it. I didn’t miss the opportunity.”

CES 2023 has a scoop with this special magic TV

Every time you think you’ve seen it all, tech manufacturers manage to surpriseus again. And that certainly applies to this TV: it sticks to walls itself. The Displace TV was proudly presented at CES 2023 in Las Vegas.

The Displace TV is a strong piece of science fiction. This 55” 4K OLED screenis not only very flat anyway, it can even stick to walls.

Displace TV is a surprise at CES 2023

The times of having to deal with wall brackets or wobbly TV furniture arefinally over. You can simply stick this television on your wall (or window). The device uses special ‘vacuum cleaner technology’ for this. Actually, theyshould have called it the Spider-TV.

Displace tv CES2023Stickslike chewing gum. (Image: Displace.tv)

With the self-developed active-loop vacuum technology, the 55-inch screenweighing 9 kilograms can be easily attached to any flat surface. All you haveto do is hold the screen against the surface, after which the technologydetects that you want to hang the TV.

Then the vacuum technology starts automatically and fixes the screen firmly. In addition, the television has two handles so that it is easy to move.

Totally wireless

The Displace TV is literally completely wireless and therefore has no powercable. The TV draws its power from hot-swappable and rechargeable batteriesthat let you watch TV for an average of six hours a day without recharging. Heshould keep that up for a month. This is possible because the ‘heavy work’ isdone by an external module.

With the Displace TV you no longer need to use a remote control to operate thedevice. Instead, you can use hand gestures or your voice to control thetelevision. For example, you can push forward with your hand to play contentor pinch with two hands to zoom in and out.

In addition, multiple displays can be connected to each other. If there areseveral Displace TVs in the room, you can ‘grab’ content and throw it atanother TV to watch there. If there is a Displace TV in another room, thetelevision detects when you move and automatically plays the content in adifferent location.

According to the manufacturers, it is also easy to stick screens next to eachother. In this way, they together form one large screen. During CES 2023, thestart-up will show how you can hang four of these screens next to each otherfor a combined screen diagonal of 110 inches and a resolution of 16K. EachDisplace TV also has a webcam with 4K resolution, which also makes the devicesuitable for video calling.

Pricey and exclusive

The Displace TV can only be ordered through the start-up’s website and isunfortunately only available for the US market at the moment. Only 100 copiesare available and they will not be delivered until December. If you somehowwant to order one or more devices: they are not cheap. One screen costs$2,999.

Of course we will also be present at CES 2023. Check out the latest video of’our’ Mark Hofman here.

Review The Pale Blue Eye [Netflix]

**In 1830, Augustus Landor arrives as a Sherlock in the snow at West Point, aremote military academy on the frozen Hudson River. It is an atmosphericlandscape that you say to yourself, except that outside the gates there is acorpse dangling from a tree. Unfortunately, the mystery pays off The PaleBlue Eye in strength with each subsequent victim, and especially convincesthe icy environment in which the film is set. **

By how a solid, serious Christian Bale with a lived-in recluse appearancetakes the first clues, you don’t expect his Watson-like opposite to flood himwith one waterfall of speech after another. But outside the gates, near thefirst crime scene, Landor meets none other than Edgar Allan Poe. Harry Melling(known as Dirk Duffeling in the Harry Potter films) plays the iconic poet inthe shadow of Bale. Who actually spent the winter of 1830 at West Point in hisyoung adult years.

It should come as no surprise that the victims followed each other in rapidsuccession after the first hanging. Landor is tormented by his own demonsduring his quest for evil: he turns out to be a widower, and sees his missingdaughter appear in his mind’s eye. When he eventually takes the law into hisown hands, it is reminiscent of Bale’s character in Out of the Furnace aprevious collaboration with director Scott Cooper.

The collaboration between the elderly Landor and the young Poe is not withoutproblems, especially when the cadet-in-training becomes obsessed with Lea, astylishly dressed young lady who is plagued by a rare disease. The best clueto the heart of the story appears to come from the occult library of anelderly counselor (Robert Duvall).

It is and remains a bit awkward to see Landor and Poe together, especiallybecause the film’s persistently serious tone suits Bale better than its co-star. Admittedly, the mischievous image that Melling gave to the HarryPotter films has been left over may also bother some viewers, but in the endit depends more on the screenplay. Purely because it concerns Poe, or so itseems, his inspired lyrics keep following each other. Since the mystery hasmeanwhile developed into a cult scenario, normally often fertile ground forhumor and absurdism, the endlessly dramatic interpretation of Poe’s characterfeels increasingly forced.

The Pale Blue Eye eventually tells two stories through its mixture ofpersonal drama and occult mystery. In theory, those stories should complementeach other seamlessly, but in practice it is contrived, because the cross-connections ultimately break up the story and make it overly explanatory. Thecareful image direction (with sufficient breathing pauses between the scenes)and the atmospheric view of a wintry snowy landscape keep the first majorNetflix film of 2023 fascinating for over two hours.

The Pale Blue Eye can be seen on Netflix.

Why do Netflix series die so quickly? Binge-watching is Netflix’s Achilles’ heel

Nowadays you get canceled by Netflix even faster than when you use the n-wordduring a session of the Congo commission. Most recent evidence: the Germanthriller ‘1899’, which was removed barely a month and a half after appearingon the streaming service. Why does Netflix get the ax so quickly?

“It is with a heavy heart that we must say that ‘1899’ will not be restarted,”they wrote Jantje Frisian and Baran bo Odar recently on Instagram. “Wewould have loved to complete this journey with a second and third season, aswe did with ‘Dark’. But sometimes things don’t go as planned.’ With that, thecurtain fell prematurely for a title that barely six weeks ago – ‘1899’appeared on November 17th – still seemed very promising. With horror series’Dark’, Friese and Bo Odar had made one of the most popular non-English seriesever on Netflix and ‘1899’ was completely in line with that previous hit: amysterious thriller that gradually becomes more and more complex, full ofstrange plot twists and hidden tips that should put the viewer on the trail ofthe solution.

That solution will not come, so that the end of the first season will onlybecome more frustrating. In ‘1899’ – spoiler alert for those who still want towatch the series – the crew of a ship sailing towards New York in the middleof the Atlantic Ocean in the late 19th century finds another boat that hadbeen missing for four months. This leads to a lot of bizarre events of whichit is never entirely clear whether they are real or not, until the finaleshows that ‘1899’ actually takes place in the future and was a computersimulation to show an astronaut who is on board a spaceship in a deep sleepwas sounding awake. But why she had to awaken somewhere in the vastness ofspace we will never know.

28 days to perform

The fact that Friese and bo Odar were told after a month and a half that theydid not have to continue working has to do with something that Netflix 28 dayviewership calls. The company closely monitors how often a title is clickedand how often it is viewed. The most important criterion for renewing a seriesis one number: the number of subscribers who have watched a season within themonth, or 28 days. ‘1899’ was a modest hit – in Belgium it was the mostwatched series for six days in a row – but the ’28 day viewership’ was clearlynot high enough to warrant a second season. And so the series met the same sadfate as, for example, ‘Teenage Bounty Hunters’, which was removed in thesummer of 2021 after barely four weeks, leaving fans with a hangover and ahuge cliffhanger.

The discontinuation of ‘1899’ may symbolize how Netflix has evolved over theyears. At its inception, the streaming giant presented itself as the “anti-TVchannel,” luring screenwriters and TV makers with promises of creative freedomand the ability to take risks. But the bigger Netflix got, the harder it wasto keep that up and with new subscribers no longer coming in as numerous asbefore – last year Netflix even saw more people leave than came for the firsttime – freedom is increasingly being traded in for safety and predictability. There are many more series aiming for the lowest common denominator and fewertitles for niche audiences, and the latter have less time to grow. After all,it is cheaper to keep launching new series in the hope that one of them willbecome a hype than to renew an existing title that has not really caught on.

Netflix’s Achilles’ heel

At the same time, the inglorious end of ‘1899’ is proof that binge-watching isnot only one of Netflix’s assets, but also an Achilles’ heel. Being able towatch something at your own pace has advantages, but it ensures that everyoneis in a different rhythm and it is therefore more difficult to discuss aseries with others. But today’s success largely depends on all the noise thatarises online. Especially for a series that revolves around mysteries andbuilds towards a grand finale, weekly episodes are an advantage: just look athow busy the second season of ‘The White Lotus’ has been recently or how’Lost’ – an obvious source of inspiration for ‘1899’ – set fire to theinternet every week at the time.

It is difficult to say whether ‘1899’ could have become a hype if the firstseason had not come online in one go. Still, it should be thought-provokingthat of all the ingredients that have helped Netflix win over the past decade,binge-watching is the only one that hasn’t caught up with the competition. Nowa vicious circle threatens for series like ‘1899’. Fans of the genre will beless inclined to jump into a series now that they know there’s a good chancethe all-explaining reveal will never happen. But that only makes it harder forthe next mystery thriller to collect enough viewers to survive.
