From yoga to electronics, everything came together with composer Wim Henderickx

It seemed like such a good year for Wim Henderickx, Belgium’s most prominentcontemporary composer. His opera was performed at Opera Vlaanderen in May Theconvert premiered, based on Stefan Hertmans’ 2016 novel of the same name. Itbecame the opera house’s best-attended contemporary production in twentyyears. Two months earlier, the premiere of his beautiful, yoga-inspired bassetclarinet concerto sounded in Glasgow Sutra , which was also released on CD.But on Sunday evening the news that Wim Henderickx died at home that afternooncame completely unexpectedly. He was sixty years old.

The news was brought out by Muziektheater Transparant, the company whereHenderickx had been house composer since 1996. Transparent calls Henderickx”perhaps the most enthusiastic artist Flanders ever had”, in the Facebookmessage: “With his far too early passing, the Flemish and international artworld loses a figurehead.”

Henderickx started his music career as a drummer in jazz and rock bands, thenstudied percussion and composition at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp andsonology at the IRCAM in Paris and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Hewas a timpanist with the New Belgian Chamber Orchestra and has been composingfor all Belgian orchestras since 1990. In addition to being house composer ofMuziektheater Transparant, Henderickx has also been artist in residence withthe Antwerp Symphony Orchestra since 2013.

Detached kind

Of canzone in 2008 he composed the compulsory work for the Queen ElisabethCompetition for singing for voice and piano. In 2019, his orchestral work went_Enigma VIII_ (2019) premiered at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall inLondon, by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins, who championed Henderickx’s music and conducted many of his performances.

Henderickx explores “sound worlds of the more detached kind,” wrote NRC in2020 on the CD recording of Sacred places III. Building bridges and mixinginfluences were a constant in his oeuvre: sound research, electronics, old andtraditional music, lyrical beauty, it’s all there. Non-Western musictraditions and Eastern philosophy inspired Henderickx to write his highlydiverse, seven-part tantric cycle (2004-2010).

In the Netherlands, Henderickx did not have the fame he enjoyed in Belgium, but his music could still be heard here regularly. His cello concerto wasperformed during the 2018 Amsterdam Cello Biennale Sangit premiered, withJean-Guihen Queyras as soloist and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra conducted bythe then 22-year-old Klaus Mäkelä. In the 2011 Holland Festival it wasorchestral work Tejas (2008), called ‘a spectacular symphonic work’ in thisnewspaper, premiered.

Crown on his oeuvre

Muziektheater Transparant and Cappella Amsterdam toured in 2017 with theritual music theatre Revelations , about the mystic Hadewijch. “The factthat Revelations lasts is due to the music. Oriental spiced flute and violinmelodies, crystalline vocalises and renaissance-like choral singing onspherical soundscapes (Jorrit Tamminga) are intersected at exactly the rightmoments by temperamental percussion and piercing quarter vocals”, concluded_NRC_.

Of The convert Henderickx now appears to have put the crown on his oeuvre. As soon as he read Hertmans’ novel, he said he knew that the story wouldbecome his ‘great opera’. From June 18, the opera could be seen for free onthe Operavision platform for six months – exactly until last Sunday. Therewere still several projects in the pipeline, but they have now been broken.

On Friday 20 January, the Residentieorkest and soloist Annelien van Wauwe willplay the Dutch premiere of the basset clarinet concerto in The Hague Sutra ,the first part of which is called ‘Breath of life’. The program will be in atotally new light.

Messi breaks the ‘curse of Drake’: rapper with infamous reputation finally brings happiness | show

Lionel Messi managed to break the infamous ‘Drake’s curse’ tonight with avictory over France in the final of the World Cup football. The Canadianrapper (36) said he had bet $ 1 million that Argentina would win againstFrance. That seemed bad news for Messi and co, because he is known for alwaysbeing wrong.

They also call it the in foreign media Drake course. If the rapperinterferes even a little with an athlete, you can wait for him to lose hisnext match. The artist brings bad luck, for example, when he took a picturewith Manchester City player Sergio Agüero. He immediately missed a crucialpenalty in 2019, as a result of which his club lost an important ChampionsLeague match to Tottenham.

The French Layvin Kurzawa was also not safe with Drake in the picture. Aftertheir snapshot in 2019, his team Paris Saint-Germain lost 5-1 to Lille. FCBarcelona was screwed when Drake bet last October that the club would win ‘ElClásico’ against Real Madrid. That did not happen (3-1) and the rapper lostseveral tons.

He is also notorious outside of football. In May, Drake lost hundreds ofthousands of dollars after betting that Charles Leclerc would win the SpanishGrand Prix, after which the driver retired with engine problems. According toforeign media, his bet for several million from recently around UFC starIsrael Adesanya also went wrong: the fighter was defeated in a title fight byAlex Pereira.

Drake’s effect has become so notorious that AS Roma football club evenjokingly forbade its players to take a picture with the artist. The ‘Drakecurse’ cannot be proven, of course, but superstitious Argentines must have hada bad day.

On Instagram, the rapper showed today that he had bet 1 million dollars(almost 944,000 euros) on Argentina’s profit. If he was right within 90minutes, he would win more than 2.7 million dollars (2.5 million euros),according to Daily Mail. That did not work: Argentina only won on penaltiesafter extra time and Drake will therefore have lost his money. But the Drakecurse seems to be officially broken.

In the silence the music became even more beautiful

The orchestras in the north and east of the country both have something withMahler in December. Phion, ‘orchestra of Gelderland and Overijssel’, programsa symphony every year around Christmas, this year with conductor Claus PeterFlor and the gigantic Third. Permanent guest conductor Antony Hermus isworking on a cycle of all symphonies with the Noord Nederlands Orkest. Thisyear he did Tenth , of which Mahler only completed the first part; Hermuschose the version completed by Deryck Cooke.

Phion’s tour started in Enschede on Friday evening. The six-piece _Third_symphony, the longest in the standard repertoire, is not an easy piece to getto grips with, with the grotesquely oversized opening movement (with Flor aneat, almost brisk 32 minutes), the alto solo, the choir, the multitude ofmusical ideas and finally the magisterial Adagio. The whole thing took justunder an hour and forty minutes.

There was something Karajan about Flor, with his gray hair, his stocky buildand his resolute broad gestures. The intended grandeur did not yet materializein the opening part, the numerous climaxes were too uniform for that and thedynamic bandwidth remained too narrow. The chamber musical moments in thefollowing movements worked much better, although the pure sound beauty wasoften missing when Mahler stops time; and therein lies the magic. There werebeautiful solo contributions from flute, oboe and violin, among others. In thecopper, a few stiff sizes stood out.

The vocal parts four and five stood proudly, thanks to Concensus Vocalis, children from the National Youth Choir and the National Boys’ Choir and mezzo-soprano Katarina Bradić, who effortlessly filled the hall with her wonderfullydark sound, even in the low register. Then followed the highlight of theevening: the seamless entry of the final movement, with that elegant, wide-ranging, lifestyle melody, by the strings. In the final, the right balance wasnot yet completely struck, but you suspected a growth potential that Phioncould realize next week.

Hermus and the NNO played the Tenth Saturday in De Oosterpoort for thesecond and last time. Mahler died before he could complete the orchestrationand the symphony was therefore considered unperformable for a long time, butsince the 1960s various musicologists have created a playable score. Cooke’sversion (who was blessed by Alma Mahler) is the best known. There are greatconductors who think that you should stay away from the symphony, or that youshould only play the opening movement; but why not try to catch a glimpse ofMahler’s last vision?

There was a lot to be said for this, especially at the NNO, because theperformance was rock solid. The long first part was well constructed andshowed a warm-blooded sound. The first Scherzo peaked very quickly, but theshort middle section, Purgatorio, was a great play of contrasting themes,light-footed against dark grunts. A thunderous death drum heralded thecaptivating final movement. After the last sounds faded, Hermus held thetension wonderfully and there was silence for almost a minute—a catharticsilence, during which the music became even more beautiful.

These were our favorite concerts of 2022 (concert)

‘Cabinet relaxes corona measures for events’, the news sites headlinedsomewhere in March. And since then there was no going back. Already the samemonth we flew sweating, roaring and whirling through the pop halls – from punkden to arena hall – and this year we finally reported on more than 160 liveshows on EAR.NL. Now that only the oliebollen remain, let’s look back: thesewere the favorite shows of our live reporters.

Sylvie Kreusch

Photo Hub Dautzenberg

April 21, Music Foundry | The Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in London wasan experience that went much further than a concert alone. For that reasonalone I don’t count that show as a ‘normal’ concert; Comparing this tribute toother shows is – with all due respect – the same as letting a Lance Armstrongwho is drugged to the brim cycle in a peloton full of natural newbies: notfair. As the best concert I therefore choose Sylvie Kreusch in Maastricht. Ina far from full Muziekgieterij, the Belgian diva showed that she is indeed thestar-to-be that many have thought she is for years. The performance, thecharisma and – of course – the music were powerful and enchanting. I may neverbe able to see her in such a modest venue again – certainly not in Flanders –but I can still say: luckily we still have the memories. Beautiful show. TOMJANSSEN

Fontaine DC

June 3, Primavera | Three years ago I saw Fontaines DC for the first timein a back room of a sad holiday park on the English south coast. A greatercontrast to their performance last summer, on the main stage of Primavera inBarcelona, is hardly imaginable. Not only did the gigantic Estrella Dammfield fill up well in advance, the adjacent field was also black. The bandopened with In ár gCroíthe go deo from the new album Skinty Fia.Goosebumps when ‘gone is the day, gone is the night, gone is the day’ rosefrom both fields. Singer Grian Chatten showed himself to be lord and master, also in this massala setting. Of Boys In The Better Land and Jackie DownThe Line the immense happening reached its apotheosis. It’s almost scary howfast this band has grown so big. HESTER ALBERTS

Nick Cave

1 June 3, Best Kept Secret | Just breathe, just breathe. Nick Caverepeated it dozens of times on Best Kept Secret. First from behind his pianoduring I Need You – almost sobbing – later, including during Higgs BosonBlues when he hung above our heads spitting, hissing and with a piercingfinger as usual. Keep breathing, keep breathing. Everyone on the beach hadthose two deceased sons in mind, but instead of mourning, the pastoral rockhero sought the light. A call to live and love poured out on the public withBad Seeds obsession, with June’s near-supermoon adding extra atmosphere overLake Victoria. The most intense festival experience of 2022. Eve the Fisherman

June 22, Amare, The Hague | After a long delay for fun and less funreasons, Eefje de Visser was finally allowed to board the tour bus this year. Her journey along the festivals and concert halls quickly turned into agrandiose triumph. Her performance at Pinkpop was so enthusiasticallyacclaimed that tickets for her later club shows flew over the digital counter.De Visser enchanted audience after audience with a very tightly choreographedpop show around the best record of 2020; the sultry and breathtaking_Bittersweet_. It almost felt old-fashioned how Eefje’s star rose this year. Her social media presence is mediocre and her marketing machine is on the backburner by default. Purely by creating something very, very good, the crowdsgrew at her feet this year. Randy Timmers

Gorillaz

Photo Anne-Marie van Rijn

July 2, Down The Rabbit Hole | With 2022 as the concert year, it isdifficult to choose a best live show. The logical choice for me would be tochoose one of the ladies from the Boygenius trio (all of whom I’ve seen liveindividually within half a year, they do deserve an honorable mention) but thebest this year was Down The Rabbit Hole- headlining Gorillaz. A closing daythat scored all points: energy, great visuals, enormous musicality and amoshpit. And of course the icing on the cake: Damon Albarn. What else can besaid about that? LOLA DESCHUTTER

Kings Of Leon

Photo Hub Dautzenberg

July 8, Weert | There were not really high expectations, as can be seenfrom the moderate turnout at Kings Of Leon in Weert. The gigantic field, onwhich Bospop would start a day later, remained impressively empty. Theconcerns turned out to be unfounded. On a summer evening, the unexpectedhappened that can make concerts so beautiful: everything spontaneously fellinto place. The previous shows of the band that can be so grumpy were soonforgotten. Fun was had in Weert: on stage and on the field, where we asvisitors had plenty of space. More than twenty songs later – from The Bandit_until _Molly ‘s Chambers_from _Sex On Fire until TaperJean Girl – we walkedblissfully into the night. The one who stayed at home had been proven wrong,we all had that feeling. We will probably not get another chance like thisanytime soon, on this evening the organizer undoubtedly suffered a loss thissummer. But enjoy? We sure did. ANTON SLOTBOOM

The Murder Capital

Luuk Denekamp ‘s photo

August 19, Lowlands | One of the last concerts I attended before the firstcorona lockdowns was that of The Murder Capital in the Melkweg. A highlightthat the Irish post-punk band repeated two and a half years later at Lowlands.Where the build-up from slow and subdued to total euphoria ( Don ‘t Cling ToLife and Feeling Fades ) still hit like a bomb. The whole Heineken wasdrenched in sweat at the end, and even more so than at other good concertsthis year, it really felt like we were back where we left off in February2020. CLEANER VAN DER ZOUW

Stromae

Photo Arend Jan Hermsen

August 20, Lowlands | 2022 was full of wonderful shows. Metallica atPinkpop, the first really big show after two years of corona silence. LittleSimz showed Down The Rabbit Hole how dazzling hip-hop sounds live. Nick Cave, who pushed it up a notch and demanded the utmost from the Best Kept Secretaudience. Still, Lowlands concluded with my show of the year. Stromae’sperformance seemed Pixar-sponsored, cutting-edge, with contrasting moods. Andguts. Stromae did the bravest thing you saw a great artist do this season. Aslights turn red, like sirens sounding the alarm, Stromae – after a bouquet ofhits – sings about his mental valley. That was felt everywhere. DAN KRAHMER

Bauhaus

August 22, Zitadelle (Berlin) | The Cure in the Ziggo was unparalleled, aswas Suede in the Kleine Melkweg. But on a beautiful summer evening in August, everything fell into place in the German capital. Bauhaus in Berlin. The open-air setting – the 16th century fortress Spandauer Zitadelle – felt just asmonumental as the Gothfathers who performed there in original line-up. The skyslowly turned red, long shadows crept over ancient walls, and Peter Murphy’ssweet sepulchral voice still lingered. The citadel shuddered thanks to gothicclassics like Stigma Martyr and – of course – signature song Bela Lugosi ‘sDead. Indestructible, timeless, undead … RAYMOND ROCKS A LOT

Japanese breakfest

Willem Schalekamp ‘s photo

October 26, Paradiso | The first ‘live event’ I attended this year wasESNS. It symbolized the tail end of the corona crisis, which I had to reportfrom the couch in my living room. Later this year I reported on Dua Lipa inthe Ziggo Dome, where the enormous mass exchanged so much sweat, saliva andelbow strikes that corona seemed decades old. My favorite, however, becameJapanese Breakfast in Paradiso, which was somewhere in between in terms ofcrowds. Sincere and friendly despite the fact that the hall was sold out. Theband played the whole show with a smile and Kokomo, IN is now the soundtrackof my winter. BASS DISCO

Rosalia

Photo Marc Prodanovic

December 10, AFAS Live | Perhaps I expected a gigantic, detached popspectacle full of vanity and attitude beforehand. Maybe I got that too. Butthat was only for a while, because after four songs Rosalía stole my heartjust as quickly as her sass impressed me, just last week in AFAS Live. Withher sincerity, her involvement and her palpable emotion, the Spanish Motomamidelivered a show that stays straight on the tightrope, in perfect balance.Full of flamenco as it was once intended, reggaeton from the future, movingmarriage proposals and impressive seduction rituals. vocals on fleek skilledon different instruments and an entourage ooh to say against. Half an houron the road, somewhere around the vulnerable HENTAI on the piano, you knewenough: this is a show you will never forget, musically, visually andphilosophically way above the rest in 2022. “Without my help, she would be dead now”: Father of Britney Spears speaks for the first time since losing the lawsuit | Celebrities

CelebritiesIt has been a year since Britney Spears (40) was finally releasedfrom her father, who had control over her personal and financial life forthirteen years. Since losing the lawsuit, Jamie Spears (70) has kept tightlips. But now he speaks for the first time: “Where would Britney be withoutthat tutelage?”

In bikini bottoms and with a bare bosom on Instagram: Britney Spears is freerthan ever. And after all, it has been a little over a year since she managedto regain that freedom. The extraordinary situation – unprecedented given thatit involved one of the most famous faces in the world – saw Britney’s fatherJamie castigated by millions of her fans.

The #FreeBritney movement, which sprang up online and received the support ofcelebrities such as Madonna, Paris Hilton and Miley Cyrus, accused Jamie ofkeeping his daughter in a mental institution against her will, tapping herphones and doing every aspect to verify its existence. Finally, last year, thejudge decided to release Britney from guardianship and re-grant her herfreedom.

Terrible time

Now, a year after the facts, Jamie Spears speaks about the receivership forthe first time with ‘The Mail on Sunday’. “It was a necessary interventionthat saved Britney from her darkest days,” said Jamie. He continues: “And notonly that. The fragile relationship with her sons Preston (17) and Jayden (16)was also maintained.” Because without guardianship, Britney would have had nocontact with her sons, according to Jamie. “They didn’t miss time with theirmom or their dad,” says Jamie. “My main goal was to get Britney back with herkids in a comfortable relationship. The conservatorship gave Kevin (Britney’sex and father of her children ed.) a sense of peace and protection. Thejudge’s rules (which required Jamie to supervise Britney’s dealings with hersons ed.) were a great tool.”

He also insists he and Britney had “good times under guardianship” and claimsit gave her two sons a sense of normalcy. He adds: “The guardianship also madesure that the boys never left that house without security.” He also emphasizesthat Britney needed his help and that she could have been dead without theguardianship.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp settle defamation lawsuit

Amber Heard announced she settled her defamation case against Johnny Depp.

The surprise move comes weeks after lawyers for the actress officiallyappealed the June verdict, in which a Virginia jury awarded the Pirates ofthe Caribbean stars more than $10 million. Heard said on Monday she “made avery difficult decision” to settle “after a great deal of deliberation.” Theactress went on to slam the US justice system in her lengthy statement andsaid she “cannot relive” the kind of humiliation she was exposed to during thesix-week trial.

“It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth andin doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I have facedon social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women arerevictimized when they come forward. Now I finally have an opportunity toemancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago,” the_Aquaman_ star continued, referencing her very public 2016 divorce from Deppwhen she accused him of abuse.

Depp has not publicly commented on the settlement, which TMZ reports is $1million. A rep for the actor did not respond to Yahoo Entertainment’s requestfor comment.

Heard, 36, noted her statement is “not an act of concession” and “there are norestrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward.”

Depp sued Heard for $50 million over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for TheWashington Post. Although the actress never named her ex-husband, she wroteabout being the victim of physical and sexual violence. A jury agreed it’sreasonable to infer the person was Depp. The ruling meant a jury did notbelieve Heard was emotionally or physically abused, even once — even after thestar’s emotional testimony on the stand.

In her statement, Heard said she “lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and social mediafodder.”

Story continues

Although Depp won all three of his claims of defamation, Heard won one of hercounterclaims and was awarded $2 million. However, the verdict was considereda resounding win for the actor and directly contradicted a 2020 ruling in theUK When Depp sued a tabloid for labeling him a “wife beater,” a judge ruled itwas “substantially true” the actor assaulted Heard on a occasion boxes.

“When I took before a judge in the UK, I was vindicated by a robust, impartialand fair system, where I was protected from having to give the worst momentsof my testimony in front of the world’s media, and where the court found thatI was subjected to domestic and sexual violence,” she continued in Monday’sstatement. “In the US, however, I exhausted almost all my resources in advanceof and during a trial in which I was subject to a courtroom in which abundant, direct evidence that corroborated my testimony was excluded and in whichpopularity and power mattered more than reason and due process. In the interimI was exposed to a type of humiliation that I simply cannot relive.Even if myUS appeal is successful, the best outcome would be a re-trial where a new jurywould have to consider the evidence age. I simply cannot go through that for athird time.”

Heard, who welcomed a daughter in 2021, said by settling this case she’s”choosing the freedom to dedicate my time to the work that helped me healafter my divorce; work that exists in realms in which I feel seen, heard andbelieved and in which I know I can effect change.”

“I will not be threatened, disheartened, or dissuaded by what happened fromspeaking the truth. No one can and no one will take that from me. My voiceforever remains the most valuable asset I have,” she continued.

Heard thanked her lawyers and supporters.

“Any survivor knows that the ability to tell their story often feels like theonly relief,” she concluded. “I cannot find enough words to tell you the hopeinspires your belief in me. Not just for me, but for all of you.”
