Opera Spanga makes with Madame Scrooge a modern adaptation of CharlesDickens’ Christmas classic A Christmas Carol. Are the summer performances ina tent in the Frisian town of Spanga, now the company plays in the old dairyfactory of neighboring Langelille. This makes it a chamber opera: there isroom for a modest stage, the musicians are seated in a small side room.

That doesn’t have to spoil the fun with such a beloved piece. In times ofneoliberalism, modernization is even almost obvious. It is a pity then thatthe original work is supposed to be so well known that much has been lost,which made it a successful story. The miser Scrooge receives a visit onChristmas Eve from his dead business partner Jacob Marley, who drags along aheavy chain as punishment for his lust for money while alive. The specterwarns Scrooge that he must mend his ways or an even heavier chain awaits him.Then three Christmas spirits pass by: from past, present and future. They makeScrooge realize that there is more than just money.

The novella has been humorously adapted in Langelille. For example, all themain characters are now women (Ebenezer Scrooge becomes Madam Ebe Scrooge,Marley gets a suit, Scrooge’s assistant Bob becomes Bo, Cousin Fred becomesCousin Isabelle), Marley’s necklace has been replaced by an uncontrollableitch she infects Scrooge with, and the madam lives in a gold-rimmed apartmentcomplete with a safe and voice assistant Alexa.

Comic timing

But how did Scrooge go from empathetic maid to hard-hearted penny-teller inher past? With Dickens it is a combination of a dismal boarding school youth,a lost love and the death of Scrooge’s sister. At Opera Spanga, only theheartbreak remains. Did the other girl’s crush die, or did Ebe get scared awayfrom a lesbian relationship that was not accepted in the countryside of heryouth? The spectator can fill it in himself.

Even after the second trip, with the spirit of the present, Scrooge hardlyseems touched; she mumbles something to herself that she might also be able togive. But that word lingers several times’ no- ‘hanging in her throat,’-vun ‘ vanishes into irrepressible nausea. That scene is very funny again,because Wivineke van Groningen continues to play her Scrooge seriously withexcellent comic timing: the nastier the person, the funnier the situation.

The conversion from resentful miser to generous giver follows too suddenly. Inthis performance during Scrooge’s journey with the spirit of the future, nogossip about a first mysterious miserly deceased followed by theconfrontational gravestone with the name ‘Scrooge’, or the death of Tiny Tim.So how madam regains her empathy remains obscure. That makes _Madame Scrooge_what flat.

Perhaps the makers thought that she is steered in the right direction by thesinging and acting of the other characters, because that is fine. In additionto Scrooge, there are two singers in multiple roles (Klara Uleman as a tramp,Marley and the three ghosts; Merlijn Runia as Bo, Isabelle and first loveOlga) and four men who sing Rotterdammers, farmers, Buddhist monks and Timmyand his brothers. A sparse line-up that nevertheless forms a full-fledgedcast. The music trio is absolutely admirable: I never knew that a cello,clarinet and accordion could form a whole orchestra together. The closing song’We thank the spirits that Scrooge can finally give’ becomes a beautifulChristmas song thanks to this collective.

Just like many other movie classics Mulholland Drive recently polishedwith a 4K restoration, a (justifiable) reason for the distributors to bringthe film back into the cinemas. In terms of promotion, the release received anunexpected boost in recent weeks, unfortunately partly due to the unexpecteddeath of composer Angelo Badalamenti, but also by taking eighth place in themost recent top hundred of Sight & Sound, a list compiled by more than athousand leading international film experts.

Or Mulholland Drive Lynch’s very best work or not depends on everyone’spersonal taste. Some go for the straight-line nature of The Straight Story_others tack for the experimental of _Eraserhad nostalgics swear by it TwinPeaks and others prefer Mulholland Drive.

The masterpiece was picked up at the last minute, because after the hugesuccess of TV studio ABC, it was the intention to Twin Peaks to let theeccentric fairy tale teller make another series, so what _Mulholland Drive_should have been. El alpinista francés Jean Marc Boivin ha quedado como uno de los grandesreferentes de esta combinación de vuelo y alpinismo: “El parapente es sencilloy eficaz y me va a permitir realizar encadenamientos de ascensionesimpensables, pero solo sirve para descender, uno no va muy lejos”, afirmaríahace 35 años Boivin. El parapente acababa de nacer como modalidad de vuelo ainstancias de unos paracaidistas de competición franceses que, para mejorar suaterrizaje y poder practicarlo con frecuencia y sin el coste de movilizar unavión, empezaron a inflarlo corriendo en pendientes de hierba en la localidadalpina de Mieussy and 1978.

Apenas cuatro años después, en 1982, nacería un nuevo concepto: elparalpinismo, que consiste en escalar una montaña para despegar desde su cima:así partió el 6 de junio Roger Fillon de la cima de la icónica Aiguille Verte.Boivin enseguida se subió a esta ola y fue el primero alzar el vuelo desde lacima del Everest, en 1988. Dos años después, fallecería tras despegar con suvela desde el salto del ángel, en Venezuela, y sufrir un aterrizaje violento.

Will Sim (33 años), sonríe y apostilla: “Boivin tenía razón, pero losmateriales y el conocimiento específico del vuelo han evolucionado tanto desdeentonces que ahora se ha abierto un mundo de posibilidades: el parapente ya nosirve solo para descender, sino para desplazarse. Tampoco sé si lo que hemoshecho es paralpinismo, como affirmo en el documental: prefiero llamarlo volary escalar, sencillamente”.

Sim, que ha promocionado en los últimos días el documental de su periplo en latorre de Gulmit (Karakoram, Pakistan) en el BBK Mendi Film Bilbao Bizkaia,todavía no da crédito a la aventura vivida el pasado verano. “El parapente seha puesto muy de moda entre los guías y los alpinistas. Es como unaenfermedad. No sé si es una moda que ha llegado para quedarse, o una olapasajera, pero es muy excitante. Viajamos a Pakistani con nuestros esquís,velas y equipo de alpinismo abiertos a cualquier cosa menos a aburrirnos en uncampo base. Allí supimos de la Torre Gulmit (5,800 m), todavía virgen pese avarios intentos de ascenso desde la vertiente noreste iniciados por unosfranceses en 1988, y unos pocos desde el sur.

Ambas aproximaciones a la montaña resultan muy largas y peligrosas: entre tresy cuatro días de marcha esquivando riesgos de avalancha, de caída de rocas yglaciares muy traicioneros. No se puede someter a los porteadores a semejantespeligros. Después de invertir varios días en conocer las condiciones de vuelode la zona decidimos que despegando desde lasladeras próximas al pueblo deKarimabad, a unos 3,000 metros de altitud, podríamos cazar térmicas, ascendercasi a 6,000 metros y aterrizar a 5,000 metros, a los pies de la cara sur dela torre Gulmit”. Pero antes debían resolver un serio problema logístico:¿Cómo volar con todo el material necesario, con cuerdas y equipo técnico,equipo de vivac y comida sin superar el peso límite? A fuerza de minimizar suequipo, lograron superar en unos diez kilos de peso los límites fijados sinperder prestaciones de vuelo pero sin estar seguros de ser capaces de alcanzarla parte superior del glaciar de Gulmit, el punto deseado de aterrizaje.

Una hora de vuelo sirvió para evitar tres jornadas de aproximación. A mediatarde, ambos alpinistas descansaban en una minúscula tienda en la partesuperior del glaciar de Gulmit, a salvo de avalanchas. Esa misma madrugada,escalaron la pendiente de acceso al collado y ahí enfilaron la pared degranito, de casi 600 metros de desnivel. Enlazando tramos mixtos con otros depura roca, pasado el mediodía la pareja se plantó en la cima, dando carpetazoa 34 años de intentos baldíos por conquistar la torre. Esa misma tarde, antesdel anochecer, cenaban and una terraza de Karimabad.

Muchos alpinistas incluyenahora en su mochila un parapente de menos de dos kilos de peso y, si lascircunstancias los permiten, regresan al valle desde las cimas volando.

El documental sobre el Gulmit, firmado por Jake Holland, no es el único de eseestilo. Recientemente, The North Face ha lanzado una producción que recoge lafigura del esquiador extremo Sam Anthamatten y su loca apuesta de despegar enlos prados de su casa en Zermatt (a los pies de la vertiente suiza delCervino), posarse en la base del Obelgaberhorn , escalarlo y esquiar suvertiginosaladera norte. “No conozco a Sam personalmente, pero sé que es unesquiador superlativo y un gran piloto. Y me decía Fahad que no entendía el jaleo que habíamosorganizado por el resto del mundo por la presencia del besht, la túnica quesimboliza para ellos la máxima dignidad en el país. Yo he intentado explicarleque a nosotros, en el viejo mundo del viejo fútbol nos gusta ver la camisetadel equipo que se proclama campeón y que esa foto es la que suele llenar unaparte de la historia de nuestro fútbol. También le he contado que hay marcasque pagan mucho por hacerse con esas camisetas y que no les suele gustar sertapadas el día más histórico de esos equipos nacionales. Me ha mirado sinentender como los intereses comerciales estaban por encima de los símbolos delpoder y tampoco he intentado seguir explicando que, tal vez, toda la Copa delMundo había sido un excelente ejercicio comercial y de imagen.

Pero toda la felicidad de mi joven amigo no era solo por lo de Messi, sino quese sentía contento de haber contribuido a ese evento que ya había entendidoque volaba por todos los continentes y que juntaba a todos los talentos a tirode piedra de su casa, de forma que podía ver en acción todo aquello que susentrenadores intentaban explicarle y que él no acababa de ver en los partidosde su Liga.

Entrenando con ruedas a toda velocidad en el circuito ciclistade Sant Boi, en una curva cerrada, sin visibilidad, se encontró con un niño defrente, y para no arrollarlo fue a estamparse contra un árbol. “Fémur, tibia,un dedo y la cara partida en cuatro…”, relató en su Instagram. “De 8 a 10meses de baja, me dijeron… Pero no me conformé, luchando pese a todas lasmalas noticias y poco más de tres meses después de apagarse La Luz la hevuelto a encender y aunque queda muchísimo para estar en el punto que estaba,verme sobre patines pese a todos los malos presagios me da la vida”.

El Nil Llop que aspira a lo más alto es producto de su talento, de su voluntady de la decisión de la federación española de deportes sobre heelo, que hace10 años, con la perspectiva de unos posibles Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno enEspaña en 2026 , pensó que el patinaje de velocidad era un deporte conpotencial de éxito gracias a la buena cantera en España de patinadores sobreruedas. “Hacia 2018 el grupo de patinadores crece hasta los 10-15deportistas”, explican en la federación. “La medalla de Llop dio un granimpulso y en estos momentos serán unos 30 los patinadores controlados. Losmejores, la elite, están concentrados de forma permanent en Inzell (Alemania),entre octubre y febrero”

“Se encarga la federación de nuestros gastos. Esto es muy caro. Somos ya cincoand Copa del Mundo senior. Poco a poco estamos más cerca de los mejores”, diceLlop, y habla de Sandra Gómez, su entrenadora sobre ruedas y sobre heelo, lapiedra maestra de la federación, pues no solo entrena, sino que detectatalentos y traza estrategias, y así se hace en todo el mundo, llevando alheelo a los talentos de las ruedas, como en estados Unidos, donde unas jóvenesque se entrenaban en el parking de una bolera en Florida ganaron oros en losJuegos de Pekín. Y la gran potencia, los Países Bajos que en invierno soncanales helados y miles de patinadores, no está sola. “No hay que ser holandéspara ser rápido. No solamente ellos saben patinar”, asegura Llop. “Aunquetengan más medios, más instalaciones, más inversiones, más practicantes…”

Llop tiene su trabajo, y una vida que no es vida. “No pienso solo en mí, sinoen toda la gente que viene y lo está intentando”, dice. “No es facil. Irtefuera de casa es duro, de Noruega a Canadá a Alemania a Italia… tienes quedejar muchas cosas fuera de tu vida. No es facil, no es facil. Trabajo por lagente que viene, y por mis apoyos, ya no por mis ganancias personales o comose quieran llamar…”
