IKEA’s first record player is part of the new collection Obegränsad(‘limitless’), aimed at people who make music at home. Completely in black,the collection is the result of a collaboration between Swedish dance DJsSwedish House Mafia and Friso Wiersma, the only Dutch in-house designer atIKEA. The collection includes a special desk, cabinets, racks and bags thatexactly fit LPs and even slippers. But the eye-catcher is the minimalistrecord player.

“Vinyl in itself is something irrational. Other minimalist turntables areoften thin and slim, but I chose a rather thick, chunky design. The recordplayer can take up a lot of space in your interior, you also make a statementwith it,” says Wiersma from Sweden. The record player has a turntable that ispartly positioned over the edge of the housing. “This emphasizes the circle.The circle also plays a major role in the visual identity of Swedish HouseMafia,” explains Wiersma.

The turntable has a built-in preamplifier, a replaceable cartridge and needle,and a USB-C power cable. Connecting to speakers is done with a simple RCAcable. “We wanted to make a very accessible record player. Simple to use andin shape,” says Wiersma.

The romance of spinning pictures

The turntable is not intended for audiophiles. “It is for people who are juststarting out with vinyl. It is as much ‘plug-and-play’ as possible. It isabout the essence of playing records. Everything is deliberately not digital.We therefore do not have a bluetooth function for wireless streaming tospeakers or headphones built-in.”

According to Wiersma, the cables also deliberately run along the side insteadof the back. “That’s why you can see them well. Cables are part of the analogexperience.” If you want better sound quality later on, you can replace theAudio Technica brand cartridge with a more expensive one. Wiersma: “I think itsounds super good. I’ve already exchanged my own old Philips record player forthis record player.”

The Dutch designer himself is a music fanatic and a great lover of vinyl. “Themusic experience is very different from Spotify or Apple Music. You’re almostschizophrenic listening through playlists and shuffle from one artist toanother. The great thing about records is the idea that artists have createdsomething from scratch. builds up to the end. In short, music as the artistintended. And it’s also a pleasant way to listen. I like the romance of it,the act of turning a record.”

Stimulating creativity

The Dutchman is one of fourteen in-house designers at IKEA and has previouslydesigned furniture, salad bowls and cutlery. “But this collection suits me themost, because music is a very big passion of mine. I also make music and sing,and used to be in a band. I’ve always had a record player too. Music is a wayof life for me and I also go to concerts a lot. There are a lot of people formusic is very important and they want that reflected in their interior.”

The Swedish furniture chain often comes up with special collections aimed athobbies, such as cooking or gaming. Obegränsad responds to the growing groupthat makes music themselves on their laptop or tablet. “We want to stimulatethat creativity and interaction. That is why this collection has, among otherthings, a producers desk, a desk with a layout aimed at producing music.Together with Swedish House Mafia we have thought about how to set up a studioat home. They also used to have their own own studio built with IKEAfurniture.” The desk also has two speaker stands and a shelf that can bepulled out from under the desktop, for example for a midi keyboard.

In addition to the record player, Wiersma is also proud of the clock in thenew collection. That is a black circle in which three small white circlesrevolve around each other. “Music can give time a different kind of role. Wewanted a way to convey that sense of intimacy.”

Wiersma calls the fact that he ended up at IKEA five years ago ‘just luck’. “Igot to talk to an IKEA CEO at the bar after a design conference in Amsterdam.We immediately clicked and was invited for a conversation in Sweden. I comefrom a Frisian family with carpenters. I love craft and design. down toearth is aimed at real use. IKEA is also very involved in this, design isvery close to the consumer. What you want to say as a designer is subordinateto that.”

In his time as a student, Wiersma didn’t like IKEA. “I saw IKEA as my enemythen. I made furniture that cost at least a thousand euros because it washandmade. You then have to compete against an IKEA that sells everything for afew hundred euros. I did a project about what I would do differently if I hadan industrial process like IKEA available. Robot techniques and computer-controlled machines are making more and more possible.”

Probably sold out quickly

Wiersma’s record player is available from October 1 for 129 euros, but theedition is limited. IKEA therefore expects that the turntable will be sold outquickly. “This is a kind of experiment. We are curious how this will bereceived. But it has already received so much attention worldwide in recentmonths. The record player was for sale in Belgium for a day due to a mistakeand was immediately sold out. TikTok videos about it have been viewed millionsof times.”

All NPO broadcasters, except NOS, refuse to talk or collaborate with OngehoordNederland in the field of journalism. That broadcaster does not engage injournalism, the broadcasting associations argue in a letter to Gijs vanBeusekom, the genre manager of the NPO who is responsible for journalisticproductions.

Normally, all broadcasters discuss the journalistic course of the NPOtogether. The heads of journalism of the broadcasters now state that OngehoordNederland ‘in our view does not conduct journalism, but uses its programmingto put forward points of view and opinions that are not journalisticallysubstantiated’.

‘The NPO’s genre consultation is a place where the heads of journalism explorethe profession together and keep each other on their toes, but this is onlypossible if all participants share the same basic journalistic principles,such as hearing both sides of the argument and finding the truth,’ accordingto the broadcasters.

The current programming of Ongehoord Nederland does not meet this in the eyesof the other broadcasters. The letter is signed by AvroTros, BNNVara, WNL,Human, Omroep Zwart, Omroep Max, KRO-NCRV, VPRO, EO and Powned. WNL editor-in-chief Bert Huisjes said yesterday that his broadcaster no longer wants totalk.

The NOS has not joined the call. “I can’t find a solution in advance not tocome to the table,” says editor-in-chief Giselle van Cann of NOS Nieuws.,,That genre consultation is precisely the place to say what you think ofjournalism. It is not for me to make an administrative judgment.”

The NPO takes the letter “extremely seriously”, a spokesperson said. He saysthat the NPO ‘has not yet taken a position’ on the issue. “We will discussthat.”

Ongehoord Nederland previously received a financial sanction from the NPOafter an investigation by the Ombudsman into complaints that the broadcasterwould spread incorrect and unreliable information, that the journalists wouldnot ask enough critical questions and that the guests would mainly come fromthe right. This would be contrary to the journalistic code of the NPO. TheOmbudsman considered these complaints to be largely well-founded.

The Ombudsman has launched a new investigation after a much-discussed itemthat showed videos of random black people beating up white people without anycontext. Presenter Raisa Blommestijn stated that the black perpetrators allhad a racist motive. But from research by pointer has shown that there is noevidence for this.

As a result of this item, the Ombudsman again received many hundreds ofcomplaints. The NPO has also asked the Media Authority to look into whetherOngehoord Nederland has violated the media law.

It took Ruben Block four years to Looking to Glide but without time pressurehe could continue to work on his firstfruits until all the details were right.The Triggerfinger frontman consulted a striker brother who had sent earlierstudio recordings of the same power trio. ‘s secret weapon Colossus (2017)?That was the producer, Block thought. “Mitchell Froom taught us to look atTriggerfinger in a different way,” he explains today. “We don’t necessarilyhave to sound big and loud to impress.”

We stroll through the Antwerp Zoo with Block and Froom. That evening, Froomwill play with Crowded House a little further down the road in the LottoArena. Block is the support act. We decide to rest at the monument of gorillaGust. “If I have to compare this record with an animal, I think of aflamingo”, Block thinks. “A strange, but beautiful bird that moves angularlyand idiosyncratically. By the way, on this record you also hear samples of agecko, and of ducks in the Venetian canals. There is music in life. Whyshouldn’t I mold that life into a song?”

Froom constantly challenged Block on the recordings, just as he did years agoon iconic records by Los Lobos, Elvis Costello or Suzanne Vega. When a full-blooded rock group from Belgium came knocking on his door about five yearsago, the producer raised his eyebrows at the time. “I like rock,” he says,“but I had never worked with such a hard and loud band like Triggerfinger. Iasked them if they were sure they wanted to work with me. But afterwards I wasso impressed with Ruben that I told him: ‘If you ever need me, call me, I’myour man’.

“And promise is debt. Suddenly he was at my door again. We saw each otherabout twice a year for an extended period of time, and for the last two yearswe worked remotely. It was all very informal, with no fuss or interferencefrom outsiders. Maybe that’s why it turned out to be such a daring and goodrecord, I think.”

The urge to experiment on Colossus even seems like a cautious stepping stonefor the sound on this solo debut, where Block pulls out all the stops. Well,what a solo: “Mitchell and I have done everything together: writing, recordingand producing. And Tchad Blake also sometimes gave new life to a song in themix. I thought it was important to tinker on my own, but it was equally niceto go deep into the woods with Mitchell. “For example, in the title song youhear a sample of my lawnmower at home (chuckles). It makes such a weirdnoise when you turn it off: wa-wuwuwuwu. That doesn’t mean anything in itself,but if you tinker with it a bit, it becomes a fantastic sound.

“I can’t imagine anyone would confuse this record with anything fromTriggerfinger, except maybe for my voice. And then again. Triggerfinger’sthunder usually forces me to sing a certain way, and here it was different.Very liberating.”

Strengths

Froom says that as a producer he closely monitors all the strong points of anartist: “I try to highlight them, but not too much. The trick is to never betoo respectful. Otherwise, the result will be too soft and colorless. Rubenwanted nothing more than a lack of respect (laughs). His strongest point?That must be his colorful character. You notice that in his choice ofclothing, but you can also hear it in his music. He is also a great guitaristand singer. And his ego doesn’t stand in his way: the first chords of ‘Awake’come from me, for example. He could have thrown it to the trash can, but hesaw a challenge and came up with something fantastic about it.”

The lyrics of Block once again read cryptically, like a Rorschach test thatespecially seem to hold up a mirror to your own perversions. For example, ‘TheKey’ seems like a song about a stalker: “Could be”, Block smiles. “A crypticform once worked better within the whimsical nature of some songs. Three days later, onFriday, they will tour for eleven concerts, starting in Almere. “But I’mespecially curious,” says pianist and arranger Julian Schneemann (1992) abouthis new project ‘Island Songs’. “I’ve been working on this for so long, andnow it’s finally happening.”

For Island Songs, Schneemann traveled to the edges of Europe: Ireland andCrete. He studied the local musical traditions and found strikingsimilarities, both in the way of singing and playing and in the social contextof the music. “They are living musical traditions, where melodies are passedon from father to son. The role of music in the community is very differentfrom here where we really only hear live music in concert halls. Music isreally part of life there,” says Schneemann.

Intimidating

The choice for Cretan music is not accidental, says Schneemann: „I have beengoing to Greece every summer all my life, my parents have a wooden sailingship there, an old fishing boat, and with that we sail to a different islandevery day. From an early age I have heard a lot of folk music there, thatsound has settled in my ear. Crete is at a crossroads of cultures and themusic contains many influences from Turkey and the Arab world.”

Julian’s father Bart Schneemann is artistic director of the Netherlands WindEnsemble. For the New Year’s Concert 2020 he brought the Greek brothers Nikosand Adonis Xylouris to Amsterdam. Julian wrote the arrangements for thespectacular performance – which can be seen on YouTube – and had a click withthe brothers. “When I asked them if I could come and study their music, theytook me in for weeks. They are like rock stars in Crete. When I told themsomewhere on the island that I was staying with the Xylouris brothers, peoplealmost fell off their chairs,” says Schneemann.

In the summer, the brothers perform night after night. And everyoneparticipates in the parties where they play, Schneemann noted: “Grandpas andgrandmas, small children, teenagers with hooded sweaters, the local machos –they all dance. For me as an outsider that was a very romantic image. But Ialso saw that it could be intimidating: they had to keep playing, and they hadto stay within the lines of tradition.”

The role of music in the community is very different than in the Netherlands

Folk music is a common thread through Schneemann’s professional existence. Heis the son of classical musicians, he himself studied jazz piano at theAmsterdam Conservatory. But for his pleasure, he mainly listened to music fromother cultures, in which he found something he lacked in classical and jazz:“The music is very earthy, they are strong, simple melodies, often very old,that sound slightly different every time. . You hear life, that’s theattraction.”

After graduating, he founded the group Caravan, with drummer Jeroen Batterink,a fellow student, and the Syrian oud player Jawa Manla, whom he knew from hiswork as an arranger for the NBE. The project was a success, they touredextensively and the third album was released this spring, Caravan III. Thefourth member of Caravan, violinist Emmy Storms, also participates in IslandSongs. “Emmy can play anything from a classical violin concerto to jazz. ButIrish music is her great love. I liked that too, but thanks to her I startedto delve into it even more,” says Schneemann.

The Irish contribution to Island Songs comes – except for Emmy Storms – fromthe famous bodhran player John Joe Kelly. The bodhrán is a frame drum (kind oftambourine) that is played with a stick.

“First of all, gestational diabetes is not your fault,” Osbourne tells PEOPLEexclusively ahead of celebrating the first annual National No Sugar Day onOct. 3. “At first I thought it was something that I had done. I only gotdiagnosed with it well into my third trimester, so it wasn’t like I developedit as some people get it from the get-go when they’re pregnant. I got it in mythird trimester and basically, I thought it was something that I had donewrong.”

According to the CDC, gestational diabetes occurs when a pregnant woman’s bodycan’t make enough insulin, a hormone made by your pancreas that lets bloodsugar in. While all women have some insulin resistance, gestational diabetesaffects only 2%-10% of pregnacies.

After taking a deeper look at the way she was eating, Osbourne decided to makesome changes and began cutting out sugar and watching her carbohydrate intake.

“This whole pregnancy, I’ve had no cravings except for sugar, which issomething I’ve never had before,” says the 37-year-old, who’s expecting herfirst baby with Slipknot’s Sid Wilson. “I wasn’t eating right.”

“The number one thing for me that I realized was taking me down was sugarydrinks and it was juice. Because even though I was drinking fresh pressedjuice, it still had a lot more sugar than I needed.”

Once her new meal plan began taking its course, the mom-to-be noticed severalchanges almost instantly.

“I’ve lost 10 pounds while pregnant,” the London native shares. “As soon as Icut the sugar out, I had a bit of a headache for a while. I’m not going tolie. It’s a bit of a shock to your system.”

“Overall, my skin cleared up. I don’t have to wear any makeup. My friends thathaven’t seen me since I started my third trimester, now that they see me,they’re like, ‘Whoa. What changed? Your skin is perfect,’ and I know thatsometimes that has to do with pregnancy, but I had pregnancy acne. I cut thesugar out and it completely went away. I think clearer.”

“I haven’t had to wear compression socks once since I cut the sugar out, whichis unreal for pregnancy,” she adds. “I just have more energy. I’m sleepingbetter. You don’t realize what it’s doing to you until you take it away is allI can say.”

As she nears the end of her pregnancy, Osbourne, who says she’s, “feelingreally good,” wants new moms everywhere to go easy on themselves if theyreceive the same diagnosis.

“I wish I had this kind of incentive prior because I’ve never been able tostick to anything a hundred percent the way that I have been doing thisbecause I’m not doing it for myself,” Osbourne says. “I’m doing it for mybaby. But I have learned — I can’t even begin to tell you the changes thatit’s made.”

Now that Osbourne has made adjustments to her everyday lifestyle, she’s vowedto continue cutting out sugar alongside the No Sugar Company in hopes ofhelping others with the launch of the new holiday.

The music scene of the 1990s was heavily influenced by rappers such as 2Pacand Notorious BIG. The influences of Coolio and his colleagues can still beheard in music that comes out now. Coolio’s biggest hit has been influenced bya soul and R&B legend. Gangsta ‘s Paradise uses parts of the melody andlyrics of Stevie Wonders Pasttime Paradise from 1976.

Gangsta ‘s Paradise _was written by Coolio, LV and producer Doug Rasheed forthe film’s soundtrack _Dangerous Minds. In the 1995 film, Michelle Pfeifferplays a teacher who goes to work at a high school in a troubled Californianeighborhood. Coolio was looking for a song that would represent the strugglesof children from a neighborhood where economic problems and racism play amajor role and came across the demo by singer LV

Stevie Wonder didn’t immediately give the green light

“It’s like Gangsta ‘s Paradise _there had to come. That it wanted to live,that it wanted to be born. And that I just had to get the message across,”Coolio later said about the writing process. He freestyled the first lines ofthe song, after which he finished the song in one session. _Gangsta ‘sParadise not without a struggle: Stevie Wonder still had to give approval.

The singer was not happy when he heard the first version. Wonder is not a fanof swearing and Coolio had quite a few swear words in that first version.”When Stevie Wonder heard it, he said there’s no chance I’ll have my song usedin a gangster song,” Coolio said in an interview with Rolling Stone.

At the request of Stevie Wonder, the rapper rewrote the song. “He didn’t likesome of the more obscene words I used. I used the N-word and in two places itsaid something like ‘ fucked in the ass ‘. If I didn’t change that, hewouldn’t put his signature. So I changed that. And once he heard the newversion, he loved it.”

That ithas changed their lives. That is why I see the number as a gift. It hasnothing to do with me, but with the person who is listening to it at the time.It has to do with all people, everywhere.”
