The Reasons of Bukayo Saka and the Mundial of Qatar | Mundial Qatar 2022

Del Toro’s Pinocchio is not huggable

It is one of the most anticipated movies of 2022: Guillermo del Toro ‘sPinocchio. A dark stop motion version of Carlo Collodi’s ambiguous fableabout a puppet whose nose sometimes grows when he lies. The Disneyinterpretation is famous, but the Mexican director gives it his own twist andmoves the story to Italy during the rise of dictator Mussolini. That isreminiscent of his Oscar-winning Pan ‘s Labyrinth (2006), which combinedSpain’s fascist history with fairy tale elements.

Del Toro and co-director Mark Gustafson ( Fantastic Mr. Fox ) get the mostout of stop motion, the technique where real puppets move a little bit eachframe. Sets are not smoothed out like in computer animation, the movingfigures are beautiful and uncanny at the same time. Del Toro’s Pinocchio isnot cuddly, but has spindly limbs and protruding nails. And there arewonderfully gruesome monsters, such as the man-devouring whale or theburrowing rabbits in the regularly visited purgatory.

It took the Mexican director decades to convince financiers to put their moneyinto his animation. It seems as if during that period the ideas, associationsand metaphors in the script piled up. The original fairy tale is alreadyepisodic: it appeared as a serial in a children’s magazine. Del Toro’s filmgoes one step further in terms of plot twists. For example, the film openswith a long prologue about Pinocchio’s father Gepetto, in which themes emergethat recur later, such as the life-destroying effect of war and the way inwhich church and state force people to conform.

Childish slapstick

Woodworker Gepetto is an acclaimed model citizen until his son Carlo dies inan unfortunate bombing raid on the church where they are working together on acrucifix during WWI. The grieving father loses himself in alcohol until aforest fairy revives the puppet he intoxicated made: Pinocchio.

Unlike Gepetto’s earlier son, this ‘replacement’ has little desire to listenwell and allows himself to be seduced by circus director Volpe, who promiseshim candy and fame. Meanwhile, fascism is becoming more and more present. Thatleads to childlike slapstick, like an encounter with a puppet version of IlDuce. But also to original variations on Collodi’s story. For example, the’lazy land’ where Pinocchio turns into a donkey here is a fascist youth camp.

Sometimes Del Toro could have chosen sharper. The tone of his _Pinocchio_varies a lot at times: vocal numbers for a much younger audience are out oftune with the rest of the film. And towards the end, so many plot twists arerushed through that the surprising, emotional ending about the meaning ofPinocchio’s life choices and the transience of earthly existence just fallsshort of the chord it seems to be aiming for.

Mundial Qatar 2022: Richarlison Espabila a Brasil | Mundial Qatar 2022

Love Actually Actress Had to Wear Dead People’s Clothes After Costume Designer Stole Her Money

A British actress was forced to wear deceased people’s clothing while livingin a care facility after her friend and costume designer stole thousands ofdollars from her, a judge determined.

Margaret Wright, also known as Meg Wynn Owen, appeared in Love Actually,Doctor Who, and Pride & Prejudice. The actress, who died this past summer, suffered from dementia in her later years and moved into a care home inCardiff, Wales, in 2015. The move came months after Brian Malam, 60, was namedher power of attorney due to her mental state, according to Wales Online.

During the sentence proceedings against Malam, who had already entered aguilty plea for fraud, prosecutor Abigail Jackson alleged he stopped visitingWright and began stealing tens of thousands of pounds from her savingsaccount. In the role as power of attorney, he was allegedly supposed to transfer moneyfrom Wright’s bank accounts to the care center so employees could buynecessities for the actress. Instead, Malam allegedly only sent a couple ofpayments, leaving Wright without needs such as clothing and a hairdresser.

Because of a lack of funds, employees put Wright in clothes belonging toresidents who had died, and cut her hair, the court was told, per the outlet.

In October 2014, the staff knew something was off with Wright’s finances, sothey took her to her bank to review her statements. Once there, it wasrevealed that Malam had been stealing from her, according to the prosecutor.

According to Wales Online, the Office of the Public Guardian investigated thecase before local police stepped in. Authorities determined Malam took £65,000(more than $78,000) from Wright over four years.

“Mrs. Wright became terribly upset about it. The matter was then reported tothe police in September 2020,” Jackson said during his sentencing, accordingto The Mirror. “That’s how the investigation with the police started and thematter came to light.”

Speaking with police after his arrest, Malam confessed that it took money fromWright to buy items for his work. However, he said he “always intended to payher back,” per The Mirror.

Despite his reason, Judge Paul Hobson told Malam he was in “an importantposition of trust carrying with it a great deal of responsibility. … Theposition was that you were taking money from her bank account in significantfunds and either transferring into your own account or spending it directly,”according to Leading Britain’s Conversation.

“As time went on you simply continued in what you were doing knowing full wellthe money would not be repaid realistically,” Judge Hobson continued, per LBC.

Hobson told Malam, per the outlet, “Your victim had to be dressed in clothesthat belonged to deceased residents of her care home due to insufficientfunds. She was reduced by your actions towards her.”

He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, per _The Mirror._He’s set to spend up to half of that time before finishing his sentence viacommunity service.

He pointed out that Malam didn’t spend her money on “flash cars orluxury holidays” but instead went to fund his costume designing business,Wales Online reported.

He said that Malam suffered from alcoholism and “everything disappeared into amiasma of drink.”

Review summary: ‘Halfway through, She Said comes in like a nightmare’ | Movies & Series

An investigation by journalists Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor of The NewYork Times started the MeToo movement five years ago. As a result, filmproducer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020. In SheSaid Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan take on the role of the journalists who gettheir teeth into the Weinstein case.

” She Said is the film adaptation of the book of the same name that Twoheyand Kantor wrote about the Weinstein case. It is a calmly told, detailed andyet exciting book – and the same goes for the film. Investigative journalismisn’t easy and takes endless patience, late She Said to see. But whenjustice prevails, the satisfaction is great.”

“The film also remains remarkably close to the facts. That’s nice, in a storythat revolves around finding the truth. What She Said lacks suspense, thedrama more than makes up for it with integrity and quiet, palpable fury.”

“Film can also function as a time document. She Said , about thejournalistic process that led to the revelation of the Harvey Weinsteinscandal, is not groundbreaking cinema. Perhaps also because the origins of theMeToo movement are still so fresh in our minds. But in twenty years’ time, thefilm would just have the status of classic All the President ‘s Men (1976)about the Watergate affair. If only because of its historical importance.”

“The film is sometimes a bit on the dry side and you see director MariaSchrader struggling to make it all visually interesting. Unnecessary choicesare sometimes made: suddenly introducing flashbacks, for example. Or AshleyJudd, the first actress who was willing to tell her story ‘ on the record’,let yourself play (then make a documentary). Those who occasionally read anewspaper or watch a newsreel will not find much news here.”

“S he Said can be summarized in one image. Halfway through the movie itcomes in like a nightmare. During a seemingly endless montage of semi-identical abandoned hotel corridors, the real recording that model AmbraBattilana Gutierrez made of Harvey Weinstein in 2015 can be heard. She hadfiled a report the day before after the film producer made unwanted sexualadvances, and agreed to a second meeting, tagged by police and protected bynearby undercover officers.”

“Maria Schrader’s film faithfully and thoroughly reconstructs the creation ofthe New York Times research article Harvey Weinstein Paid Off SexualHarassment Accusers for Decades by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey that waspublished on October 5, 2017 and would eventually lead to Weinstein’s arrest, uncover dozens of other cases, and spark what has come to be called MeToo.Their book She Said (2019) is the basis of the film.”

“Comments like ‘the silence was the worst’, ‘why is sexual assault sowidespread and so taboo?’ and “if this happens to Hollywood actresses, whoelse?” come along in a film that has a businesslike, almost documentary-liketone. It is difficult to discover a dramatic line in it. Still, it is excitingto watch the cleverly written, compact scenes.”

“Will MeToo change anything? Producer of the film Brad Pitt has hadrelationships with women – Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie – since the 1990s -who brought home stories of sexual assault by Weinstein. It didn’t stop Pittfrom working with the man. Maybe he wants to She Said straighten somethingout. Nice, but it’s a little late.”
