Independent Russian station broadcasts from Amsterdam: ‘It’s safe here’

Speaking is presenter Mikhail Fishman of the independent Russian news channelTV Rain. He complains that he had to swerve. As a journalist, he thinks heshould be in Russia. “Working in Moscow was crucial for me. The viewers knewthat the coverage about Russia also concerned me personally. I was in the sameboat as my audience.”

He has been making his program since the summer And so on for the YouTubechannel of TV Rain (in Russian: Dozhd) from Amsterdam. And now TV Rain opensits own studio in the DPG Media building in Amsterdam. The channel will gofull again on Monday after an interruption of almost seven months **** in theair.

The TV Rain team is preparing for the first broadcast in the new studio:

Russian TV Rain broadcasts from the Netherlands about war

Working in exile does have practical objections from a journalistic point ofview, says Fishman. “The question is, of course, where do I get myinformation? TV Rain has always had a reputation for reporting what washappening on the streets and in society. Whether it was protests or lawsuits,or the poisoning of opposition leader Navalny, we were there. , at location.”

TV Rain has a network of journalists who operate anonymously. “As a result, weknow and understand what is happening in the Kremlin and in the war, even ifit is less than before.” When Fishman speaks of his resources in Russia, thereis hesitation in his voice: he doesn’t want to endanger them in any way. “Fearis everywhere,” Fishman says resignedly.

The final preparations are now being made in the studio. The TV Rain logohangs on the wall, not in the usual pink, but in yellow and blue – theUkrainian colors. Technicians are working on transmitters and microphones.Fishman reads the autocue. “Is the letter big enough?” is the question fromthe control room. “It’s okay,” Fishman says.

We need to get out of the misery created by Russia together.>> Channel director Natalja Sindejeva

Founder and director Natalja Sindejeva is also present during the trial run.She says that they managed to raise the money through a fundraising campaign.European funds for independent journalism and private donors from around theworld contributed. And there were also viewers from Russia. “But that is notabout a lot of money, because it is difficult to transfer large amounts abroadfrom Russia.”

The studio’s decor was designed and made in Ukraine and came to theNetherlands with trucks a few days ago. Channel boss Sendejeva: “We thinkthat’s important; the Ukrainian economy needs orders. And we have to get outof the misery created by Russia together.”

Since the departure from Russia, the demand for a restart of TV Rain has beenhigh, says Sindejeva. The channel is popular for news programs like Here andnow and also for satirical programs about the fake news on the Russian statechannels.

These Russians tell correspondent Iris de Graaf why it is important that TVRain can continue to broadcast:

Russians respond to censored channel that now broadcasts from the Netherlands

After the outbreak of war in late February, TV Rain continued to broadcastonline for three more days. Then the government completely blocked thechannel. TV Rain had not had access to the cable for years: it had alreadybeen denied access to the cable in 2014, after the occupation of Crimea andthe war in the Donbas.

Kremlin opposition has dominated the station’s existence from the verybeginning in 2010. But the station has learned to switch quickly. And the factthat the political tide is not going well has contributed to its popularity:with every **** crisis in Russia, ratings skyrocket. Fishman himself takescare of that as a leading face. Viewers praise him for his moral steadfastnessand involved analyses.

Few million viewers per day

They have now attracted more than 55 million unique visitors with theirYouTube broadcasts in recent months. “We have a few million viewers a day,”Sindejeva says.

Fishman is happy that the station can operate at full strength again fromMonday. Then they can do what ultimately matters: reporting the war to aRussian audience inside and outside Russia. “The viewers of my program havelong since turned away from all the propaganda that is poured out daily inRussia. They want to know what is really happening.”

Frank Verstraeten, the tragic narcissist behind the Zillion

There are many good stories in the legendary Antwerp dance temple Zillion.Film director Robin Pront opted for the ‘rise and fall’ of founder FrankVerstraeten. Why did the nineties revolve around ‘the little one from Meise’?

Even those who have never been to the Zillion or looked down on the johnnyculture of the 1990s will remember the images of the homejacking of Zillionfounder Frank Verstraeten and his then girlfriend and Miss Belgium BrigittaCallens. The photos from the ‘boekskes’ in which the glamor couple posedvisibly battered went around everywhere. It is logical that ‘Zillion’, RobinPront’s film about the mega discotheque and its flamboyant founder, builds upto that moment.

The director from Antwerp was too young to enter the dance hall. But he knew, like many, the striking stories of the wild (sex) nights, partying BVs, drugbusts and problems with the judiciary, local residents and the police. He alsoknew of the reputation of the ‘little one of Meise’: a selfish pusher whoregularly made fun of visitors or even police officers.

Frank has always remained the tough businessman from his Zillion days. “

An acquaintance of Verstraeten

Verstraeten contributed to the film, which always increases the risk of ahagiography. But he sure doesn’t look good. ‘Zillion’ paints a Jordan Belfort-esque portrait of the Belgian ‘king of nightlife’: a tragic narcissist with aninferiority complex. The analogy with ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, about theAmerican stock market fraud who led a life full of dirty money, drugs and sex,is obvious: Martin Scorsese is one of Pront’s great film heroes. The result isa dynamic film in which the spectacle rarely gets boring or feels over thetop, because that’s just how it was in Verstraeten’s life.

Zillion: Why young people party like it’s 1999

It starts in the film with the young Frank who, as an only and somewhatwithdrawn child, taught himself to program and around the age of 19 ran acomputer parts company next to his single mother’s ice cream parlor. He alsoevaded taxes. The Zillion came after Verstraeten was thrown out of the Carréin Willebroek. In revenge, he bought – according to the film, but perhaps alsoin real life with money from a VAT carousel – a large building in the South ofAntwerp and converted it into one of the most notorious discotheques inEurope. This was done with a permit for a ‘multi-purpose space with sportshalls’.

Aquarium dancers

Soaring stages, dancers in an aquarium, fireworks fountains, lasers, merchandising. In our experience, the dance palace was the Tomorrowland of itstime. In the five years that the Zillion was open, between 1997 and 2002, itwas never quiet. There were licensing issues. Neighbors complained aboutnoise. North Africans were harshly shown the door. The nightclub has beenlinked to criminal activities such as drug and arms trafficking, moneylaundering and even public defamation. The latter referred to the so-calledZundays, erotic Sunday evenings that culminated in orgies with high-rankingpeople.

The film ends with the closing of the club and the conviction of Verstraetenfor some of the charges against him. Unlike Belfort, who capitalized on hislife story in the lecture circuit after his prison sentence, he withdrew frompublic life. Verstraeten, now 53, has had a company producing LED screens inBuggenhout for 15 years. Pixelscreen enjoys a solid reputation in the Flemishevent sector and the annual accounts also show good financial health. “He’sbeen at it too long not to be okay,” says one customer.

In the film, Verstraeten, cleverly played by Jonas Vermeulen, screams that heis not driven by money. ‘That’s right. Creativity is his main driver: makingthings possible through technology,” says someone else who knows him fromPixelscreen. ‘He has always been that tough businessman. Whom he no longerneeds, he drops like a brick. That’s okay, isn’t it. That’s just how business

In 1990, Littlefeather told PEOPLE of the fallout she faced in response to herOscars moment. “I’m officially retired as the refuser of Academy Awards,” shesaid, noting that the speech killed her career in Hollywood.

Roxeanne Hazes ‘I have experienced a lot of emotional manipulation’

Roxeanne Hazes has a new single: No sorry. On the stage of MatthijsContinues she played the song last night and talked about the deeper meaningbehind the song. Where there is always a lot to do about her brother AndréHazes, especially after the controversial documentary that came out this week, people have a lot less to complain about Roxeanne. In fact, the viewers athome praise the singer.

Matthijs Continues is a BNNVARA program on Saturday evenings. VeteranMatthijs van Nieuwkerk presents the program, in which music, humor and movingconversations are central. Yesterday, among others, BLØF, Geike Arnaert,Roxeanne Hazes, Manon Spierenburg, MY BABY and Ronald Snijders performed theirmusical arts.

Van Nieuwkerk thinks it’s a beautiful record

Daughter Hazes says that she is doing very well. She is having a good time atthe B este Singers behind it, has dived back into the studio and is going ontour. And then there’s the new single. “I think it’s a really beautifulrecord,” says Van Nieuwkerk. He says that he has always been a fan of hermusic.

“Perhaps I’m imagining this, because André was your father, but André’s bluesis in your songs,” thinks Van Nieuwkerk. “The pain, the melancholy.” Hazes:„It is funny that you say that. I think if I’ve inherited something from him…I’ve inherited a lot of things from him: things in my face or charactertraits. But the melancholy of his life, I think that is a bit the Hazes DNAthat is in me. So I also notice that I find a lot in my own songs.”

Hazes: ‘Song is about gaslighting’

The singer wrote No sorry together with Kraantje Pappie „I wanted to make asong about gaslighting. A theme that is not yet discussed much in theNetherlands,” she says. Van Nieuwkerk asks if she can explain this term „gaslighting actually means emotional manipulation. That’s something I’vebeen through quite a lot around me, so I wanted to make a song about it.”huhhe is not an angry song according to the Hazes scion. „It’s actually a veryhopeful song, about someone who comes out of that and finds the strengthagain.”

“I will be a victim or a hero, but I am not the perpetrator,” Hazes finds themost beautiful sentence from the song. „This is how I express how a_gaslighter t_ work goes. If you address someone about their actions, such as:’You are hurting me with this or I don’t like this’, you will often noticethat someone says: ‘Yes, but you are doing this and how can you get over this?tell me.’ So that person is always the victim, the hero, but never theperpetrator.”

Bløf frontman Paskal Jakobsen recognizes a lot in the song. “It really hit mehard,” he says. “But that may also be because I also have people with atheatrical personality disorder in my very close environment. And you justhave to deal with that. It arrives.”

Viewers are fans of Roxeanne Hazes

The viewers at home have a lot of praise for Hazes. The song is popular and sois the singer herself. “Once again, very impressed with Roxeanne Hazes. A topsinger with a unique sound who always manages to amaze me,” writes one viewer. The comparison with other family members is also never far away. “That Roxanneis the best, nicest and smartest in that Hazes nest.”

In his new book – which will be released at the end of this month – Friendsactor Matthew Perry not only talks about his alcohol and drug abuse, but alsotalks about his relationships. One is the one with Julia Roberts.

Perry revealed that their secret romance began after the actress wasapproached by the crew to star in the sitcom. Producers urged him to contactRoberts, who had indicated that she would only guest-star if she were in astoryline with Chandler Bing, played by Perry. “I sent her red roses with acard saying that the only thing more exciting than the prospect of doing theshow with her was that I finally had an excuse to send flowers.” Not only didRoberts agree to do the show, but he also sent Perry a present. “Bagels, lotsof bagels,” he told The Times.

And so began the romance between the two. “Three or four times a day I wouldsit by my fax machine and watch the slip of paper reveal her next message. Nine times out of ten that was the case.” By thetime shooting started, they were a couple.

But just two months later, Perry dumped her. “A relationship with JuliaRoberts was too much. I was constantly convinced that she would break up. Whywouldn’t she? I wasn’t enough, I could never be enough. I was broken.” And sohe decided to break up.

It is not the first time that Perry took his chance with an actress. JenniferAniston is said to have rejected him for the recordings of Friends. “Jenniferand I had met about three years earlier through mutual acquaintances. Iimmediately fell in love with her – how could it be otherwise – and I got thefeeling that she was intrigued too.

At the time, he had just been offered a part in two TV shows, news that he wasvery eager to share with the actress. “I called Jennifer and said, you’re thefirst person I wanted to tell this to,” he recalls. “Bad idea. I could feelthe ice forming through the phone. In hindsight, it was clear that this madeher think I liked her too much or in the wrong way. And I only made thatmistake worse by asking her out.” Aniston also refused, but indicated that shewould like to be friends. “And I made it worse by saying we couldn’t be.”

Another ex of Brad Pitt fell for his charms, because shortly before Friendsconquered the world in 1994, Matthew met actress Gwyneth Paltrow at a party inMassachusetts. “We disappeared into the broom closet and then kissed. It wasthe last summer of my life where I could do this at a party with a woman namedGwyneth and no one but me and Gwyneth cared,” said Perry.

Record candidate Holland’s Got Talent has to leave the field

Lisette Brillemans may not be the greatest talent in our country, but onething is certain: the flamboyant pianist is a go-getter. After six auditions(!) she finally made it to the semi-finals of Holland ‘s Got Talent to kick, but there the curtain fell. Judge Dan Karaty urges her to leave it at that.

Brillemans was first seen in the program eleven years ago. She auditions fivetimes over the years, but is always sent home unceremoniously. Until thisyear. Not because the judges have finally seen the light, but becausepresenters Jamai and Buddy press the golden buzzer and give her a place in thesemifinals. Last week was the first semi-final, last night the second.

Holland’s Got Talent semi-final

Dressed in a glittery dress and a boa, Brillemans ascends the stage. Sheperforms her musical skills on a golden piano, while two dancers move along tothe music. “Please, keep going,” Jamai says as he watches her performance.Afterwards, she receives a thunderous applause and a standing ovation from theaudience. “How did it go?” Jamai asks. “Okay, only in the beginning did thingsgo wrong for a while,” Brillemans replies. When Buddy tells her not to saythat, she jokes about it: “It went really well, from the start of course.”

And then it’s up to the jury. Chantal Janzen kicks off with praise for thecandidate. “Dear Lisette, it was a very long road. It has never managed to getbeyond an audition. Whatever happens next, it doesn’t matter anymore becauseit’s so pretty. You’ve just already won for yourself because you’ve moved onand you’ve never played as well as tonight. You should be very proud of that.”

Marc-Marie Huijbregts is also positive. “Lisette, what are you supposed to dowith your life now that it’s all complete? It’s finished. The best moment forme was just before the end, when I also saw a kind of surprise on your ownface that it worked. That you got through it. We were all delighted with youabout it. That was very nice. My favorite moment of the performance. Exceptfor the beautiful piano playing, very well done.”

Then it’s the turn of the critical Dan Karaty. “I have one question: was thisit?” he asks, to the amusement of the audience. “No,” Brillemans repliesfirmly. Karaty says he deliberately didn’t press so she could finish theperformance. “You made it to the semi-finals, you finished your performance. No red crosses. I don’t think it gets any better. Maybe you have to acceptthat this was it. You’ve done it and now it’s done.” Brillemans doesn’t wantto hear about that. “I could do that, however , point one: this isn’t thefinal yet. And point two: _Holland ‘s Got Talent _without Lisette Brillemansis _Holland ‘s Got Talent _not.”

Twitter is a big fan of Brillemans

Brillemans may not have secured that dream spot in the final, but she hasstolen the hearts of people at home. “Dear Lisette, I love what you do andmaybe some acts are more special in performance, but you are indeed the queenof the show!” writes one viewer. “Does Lisette already have a fan club?”someone else wonders.
