Woman who alleges rape by Danny Masterson delivers emotional testimony over four days

A woman who said actor Danny Masterson in 2003 raped her while threatening herwith a gun spent four days telling her story last week in graphic andemotional testimony.

Known only as Jen B., she was the first of three women who are accusingMasterson of rape to testify. On the stand, she recounted, sometimes throughtears, how a friendly, “brother-sister” relationship turned dark after the”That ’70s Show” actor assaulted her as she went in and out of consciousness.

She told jurors of how she feared the Church of Scientology and was pressuredby its officials not to go to law enforcement with her allegations of rapeagainst Masterson, a high-profile church member.

Jen B., a former Scientologist, with Masterson in the late 1990s when the tworan in similar circles in the church and socialized. Masterson’s personalassistant, Brie Shaffer, was Jen B.’s friend at the time.

One night in September 2002, Jen B. was supposed to meet Shaffer andMasterson, but Shaffer canceled at the last minute. Jen B. joined Mastersonand others at Lucky Bar in Hollywood, where the actor gave her a vodka-and-grapefruit drink, according to her testimony.

Jen B. planned to sleep at Masterson’s house, and the two left the bar around2 am, she testified. She said she had only a few drinks but was drunk anddizzy when they arrived at Masterson’s Hollywood Hills home.

Despite her confused protestations, she testified, Masterson began kissingher, then had sex with her. She said she stopped the encounter when Mastersonattempted to penetrate her analy.

“I screamed ‘no’ out loud,” she said. “I curled into a ball and … I woke upthe next morning.”

Despite her negative view of the night, she did not consider it rape at thetime, she said. Masterson is not charged for the 2002 encounter.

Jen B. told friends about what happened and was called in by Scientologyofficials to discuss the incident, she testified.

Numerous friends had written complaints to the church, known as “knowledgereports,” against Jen B. The church, through her “ethics officer,” had her gothrough weeks of training, known as “handling,” in response to the incident.

“You can never be a victim [in Scientology],” she said. “Nothing ever happensto you that you didn’t cause…. No matter what condition you find yourself in,no matter how horrible, you are responsible.”

Jen B.’s testimony regarding Scientology reignited debate between theprosecution and defense about the degree to which the controversial religionwould be brought up in the trial.

“I understand these witnesses’ lives may have been completely inundated withScientology,” Judge Charlaine Olmedo said, admonishing prosecutor ReinholdMueller during a break in Jen B.’s testimony. “This trial is not going to beinundated with Scientology.”

For months after the 2002 incident, Jen B. did not speak with Masterson, andher relationship with Shaffer was on the rocks.

In April 2003, however, she returned to Masterson’s home, where he was havinga party. He offered her a red drink, she tested.

Less than an hour later, Masterson approached and told her she was going inthe Jacuzzi, Jen B. told the court. Though she said she did not want to go in,Masterson would not take no for an answer and threw her in, she said. Once inthe water, she started to feel sick.

“I’d never been so nauseous in my life,” she said. “I heard [Masterson’s]voice saying, ‘I’m going to take her to throw up, stick my fingers down herthroat. She needs to throw up.’ “

He took her to his bathroom and made her vomit and take a shower, Jen B.testified. After the shower, Masterson moved Jen B. to the bed, where shepassed out, she said.

“When I first woke up on that bed, he was on top of me, and his penis wasinside me,” she testified.

She tried to grab Masterson’s face or hair to stop him, but he removed herhand and continued, she testified.

“I grabbed the pillow behind my neck … pushed it into his face right here. Itwas so close…. He shoved it back in my face harder, completely, with all hisbody weight on me,” she said. “Smothering, smothered. I could not breathe…. Idon’t recall him saying anything…. I went unconscious.”

When she came to, he was still penetrating her, Jen B. testified.

“I grabbed his throat…. Oh, God. So scary,” she said, crying. “[He] pulled myhand off and pulled it out, held it, grabbed the other hand, held it together. And just his face — I’ve never seen it look like that.”

When Jen B. regained consciousness that night, she heard banging atMasterson’s door, she testified. The actor pulled a firearm from a drawer, shesaid.

“Hey pulled [the gun] from the nightstand area. Pulled it up and held it inhis hand,” she said. “He told me to shut the f— up.”

Then Jen B. passed out again.

Jen B. reported the rape to the Los Angeles Police Department in 2004, despiteher fears about the reaction of officials in the Church of Scientology. Shehad asked for permission from officials to report the rape to police but wasdenied by the church’s “international justice chief.”

Olmedo allowed Jen B. to explain how her adherence to Scientology doctrinescaused her to delay reporting the rape.

“I was a Scientologist, and Mr. Masterson is a Scientologist, and you cannotreport another Scientologist in good standing to the authorities,” shetestified.

She said she feared she would be excommunicated if she reported Masterson topolice.

“My life would be over. My parents would have to disconnect from me…. They’dhave to choose [Scientology] or me…. I didn’t know that they would choose meover that,” she said.

No charges were filed against Masterson at the time. Jen B. eventually settledwith him for $400,000 and signed a nondisclosure agreement about the incident.

Masterson’s attorney Philip Cohen suggested that Jen B.’s story had changedover the years.

“[Jen B.] is now going to tell us the 2002 sex, which she told LAPD in 2004was consensual, she’s now going to tell you it was not,” Cohen said. He saidJen B. did not mention the gun to the LAPD in 2004, according to the policereport.

Jen B. insisted she told the LAPD about the gun in 2004.

She admitted forgetting certain details about the night after nearly twodecades. Under cross-examination, she conceded that she had forgottenMasterson woke her the morning after the alleged rape; she had previouslythought he was gone. But she insisted that she recalled the most importantfacts.

“I forgot that he awoke me…. It’s almost 20 years, I’m really trying,” she

DWTS Lindsay Arnold Details the Emotional Rollercoaster of Pregnancy After a Fertility Struggle

Lindsay Arnold can remember the moment she finally let out the breathe shehadn’t realized she’d been holding.

After months of trying for her second child with husband of seven years, SamCusick and weeks of what she calls “cautious, cautious optimism,” followinga positive test, the Utah-based pair turned up to that all-important first OB-GYN appointment feeling, admittedly, more than a bit nervous.

Then, “we got to do our first ultrasound and got to hear our baby’sheartbeat,” the pregnant Dancing With the Stars pro revealed in an exclusiveinterview with E! news. “And it’s honestly the best feeling in the world.”

She actually wasn’t sure if it would feel quite as magical as when she wasexpecting now-23-month-old daughter sage “because it’s not the firsttime,” she explained of the baby she’ll welcome next May, “but, truly, thereis nothing quite like the confirmation that you have life inside of your body. That’s just the coolest thing that you could ever experience.”

2022 Celebrity Babies

Particularly when you’ve already experienced one of the worst.

Because while the longtime ballroom dancer had vaguely heard about false-positive pregnancy tests, “you just don’t think it’s gonna happen to you,” sheadmitted. That is, until this past August, when she excitedly saw the stickchange after months of trying, only to get her period just days later. SaidArnold, “It was awful and it was so hard.”

For the 28-year-old it was another crushing blow in what had become a fairlychallenging journey to give her little Sagey a sibling.

And while she understood that people were coming from a place of excitementwhen asking about her having another, “the more that I’ve gone throughstruggles, the more I’ve understood why that question can be really triggeringfor some people,” she explained. “Because a lot of times it’s like, ‘You needbaby no. 2’ and it’s like, ‘Well, yeah, I have wanted baby no. 2 for almost ayear now.'”

So while she appreciates that people are eager for more little Cusicks (“Weall love babies!”), the dancer noted, “At the same time, it’s like, ‘I _am_trying,’ and sometimes it does bring up wounds that maybe people don’tunderstand that they’re tapping into.”

Story continues

She’s found support in her community, both the IRL variety and the one she’sbuilt with her more than one million Instagram followers.

“I feel like for so long, we as women were told not to discuss the negativesand that if we couldn’t get pregnant it was because there was something wrongwith us,” Arnold explained. “And I hate that narrative. I want to change thatnarrative. There are so many incredible women who have already started tochange that.”

So she’s eager to join the chorus of voices. “You’re not alone, you really, really aren’t,” she stressed of what she’d tell people going through theirown struggles. “Lean on the people around you. Don’t be afraid to feel yourfeelings and go through all of those emotions because they’re valid and it’sreal.”

On her own personal emotional rollercoaster, she’s at the point where theexcitement levels have climbed almost to a tipping point. Seeing anotherpositive pregnancy test in September just a month after the false one, “wasjust the best feeling,” she said. “We’re so, so, so grateful.”

Having made the tough decision to step away from the ballroom for a beat evenbefore learning she was pregnant, she’s channeling all her focus into helpinggrow her three babies: Sage, set to turn 2 on Nov. 2, Baby Cusick (yes, theywill find out the sex, “I am always so impressed with people who can wait, Ijust don’t think I could”) and The Movement Club, the workout program she’sbeen dreaming about basically since she was a young dancer on the ballroomcircuit.

The idea was born from the early months of her pregnancy with Sage. “This wasthe beginning of COVID,” she explained. “I wasn’t able to go workout anywhere,I was home all day and my body was changing rapidly. I just found that therewasn’t a space for me that I felt I could trust what I was doing, that I wasguided in a way that felt encouraging.”

And she realized if she felt this way after two-plus decades of dancing thatled her to the top eight on So You Think You Can Dance in 2012 and then her_DWTS_ gig the following year, “I’m sure there are other people out there whofeel the same way as I do.”

Her goal, she said of the online platform of five- to 30-minute equipment-freeworkouts, is to give women “of all ages, all stages of life a space where theycan feel safe, they can feel encouraged, no matter if they’re at the top oftheir game or if they’re just starting out. Come as you are there’s somethingfor everybody.”

Lindsay ArnoldLindsayArnold

Ivy City Co.

Including, of course, expectant and new mothers.

“Being pregnant is honestly one of the scariest things ever,” Arnold allowed.”You’re actively creating a human just by yourself, which is crazy. It’sscary.” When expecting Sage, “I remember feeling very scared, very unsure whatI could do with my body,” she said. “And as a dancer, somebody who’s alwaysmoved my body, that was unsettling.”

Hard at work on getting her pre and postnatal certification, “I know there arewomen out there who feel the same who are going through their first or thirdor second or fourth pregnancy or in their postpartum stages and feel uneasyand unsure,” Arnold said . “And I want to be the person who can guide them, help them move their bodies in ways that are safe, that feel good.”

And creating content for the platform, soon to be launched as an app, hasactually helped her battle the first trimester’s one-two punch of nausea andexhaustion.

Unable to indulge in the midday naps she enjoyed the first time around thanksto a very active toddler, “The Movement Club has been my saving grace,” sheshared. “Having this program to keep me accountable to move my body everysingle day, to know that people are looking to me to give them something tomove their body, it has helped so much.”

She knows it’s an approach that doesn’t work for everyone, “but for mepregnancy nausea, the best medication I can give that, is moving my body.Every time I do I feel like my tiredness goes away, my nausea is subdued. “

Her happiness, meanwhile, is through the roof.

Sage has already had some practice at that big sister life, spending hersummer with cousins Brooks 4 months, and Quincy , 2 months. “It’s beensuch a relief for me seeing her interact with them and actually really lovethem, because I feel like some kids just don’t like babies,” Arnold noted.”But she is definitely a baby lover. She wants to hold them. she wants to givethem their blanket. She doesn’t get jealous of me holding the babies. So I’mlike, ‘Okay, this is a good start. ‘”

because of course Arnold—the oldest of four daughters—has been fantasizingabout raising a troupe of tiny besties. “I daydream about the moment whereSage will get to meet her sibling for the first time,” she gushed. “Itliterally makes me emotional thinking about it. I mean, my siblings are mybest friends. So knowing that we’re creating that for Sage is such a coolfeeling.”

Dancing With the Stars Season 31 Scorecard

While she can’t imagine how she can “possibly fit more love into this heart,”Arnold is more than ready for it. “I can’t wait to have more of that in ourlives and to just have another member of our family that is ours,” she sharedof what she’s most looking forward to. “It’s very cool that me and my husbandget to create our little best friends that we get to raise.”

Lisette received a golden buzzer after her sixth audition on Holland’s Got Talent, but dropped out in the semifinals: ‘I am a go-getter’

Why do you so often participate in a talent show like Holland’s Got Talent?

“I love being on stage in front of such a large audience. The audience lovesthat I’m there, and I in turn love that the audience likes my act. I also lovethe tension: you never know what’s going to happen, but in the end it’s alsoabout my dream to become famous.”

You’ve been rejected by the jury five times. Isn’t it ready then?

“Before planes actually flew, a lot of planes also crashed. I’m a go-getter.If it doesn’t work, I just do it again, until I succeed.”

And then isn’t it bad if you always have a grumpy jury in front of you withunkind comments about, for example, your weight?

“I love the fuss that something like this creates. That’s what I do it for.Partly I also bring it on me. The last audition I came on stage with a biggolden curtain around me, to prevent judges from already on the stage. redbutton before they saw me.”

People sometimes wonder when they see me: ‘does she have a mental disorder?’

Lisette Brillemans

“I like that fight. For example, if you walk off such a stage after rejectionand then secretly shout: ‘Culture barbarians!’ That’s just beautiful.”

Did you believe it was still possible?

“Yes. I’ve always been dead serious about my auditions. People sometimeswonder when they see me: ‘Does she have a mental disorder?’ No, I am onehundred percent healthy. I know what I’m doing. My goal is to win. That hasnot always worked out, also because the jury did not always treat me properly. But I certainly continued to believe in it.”

Does the fact that the golden buzzer came from the presenters and not thejudges detract from your success?

“I think it’s extra special! That happens much less often. I had a butterflyfeeling in my stomach and was stunned. I couldn’t believe that I, LisetteBrillemans, would get the golden buzzer. Why me? And that’s what I mean me ina positive way.”

What did you consider to be your most successful audition?

“I see my fifth audition as my best audition ever. Then I played AmsterdamCanals by Wim Sonneveld. Flawless. And I also made an arrangement on theverse, which I played flawlessly. But the jury disagreed. That was hard. Ithought it was the very best ever.”

How do you look back on the semi-final, in which you performed in a largegolden dress with white boa and golden piano?

“It was a unique experience. Who does something like that?”

Are you upset that you didn’t pass?

“Of course. I would have loved to have been in the final. On the other hand: Iget so many reactions on the street. Yesterday I was in the Albert Heijnaround the corner from me in Rotterdam. Everyone wanted to take a picture withme, very much. cool. They say: for me you are the winner. You also see allpositive messages on TikTok and Twitter. That’s nice. Although I could alsouse the 50 thousand euros that the winner gets.”

‘If Chopin were still alive, I’m sure it would have been fine with me and> love’

Lisette Brillemans

What does playing the piano mean to you?

“A great distraction from everyday worries. For example, I love Chopin verymuch. I also feel all the torments and intense problems he went through. Ihear longing, love, but also soldiers marching in his music. That’s in metoo.” Lisette gets emotional while talking about this.

Who are you besides a pianist, do you have a hard life that you recognize inChopin?

“Everyone has their things. Life is not always smooth sailing. I grew up inDordrecht, which I do not want to go into too much detail. I have programmedcomputers in my working life, but at the moment I have no work.”

“And in the search for love we have not yet managed to find that one true one.Chopin is no longer among the living. If he were alive, I would have been finein love.”

Have you achieved your success and was this your last audition on Holland’s

Henry Cavill confirms that he’s back as Superman after ‘Black Adam’ cameo

You will believe a man can fly… again. Days after fans of the DC ExtendedUniverse witnessed Henry Cavill suiting up as Superman for the first time infive years in a Black Adam bonus scene, the actor has taken to Instagram toconfirm that he’s back in the good ol’ red and blue.

“I wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting this, because Iwanted to give you all a chance to watch Black Adam ,” the British actorsaid in the video accompanying his post, which arrived on the heels of themovie’s $67 million opening weekend. “But now that plenty of you have, I wantto make it official: I am back as Superman.”

“The image you see on this post is and what you saw in Black Adam are just avery small taste of what’s to come,” Cavill continued. “There’a lot to bethankful for and I’ll get to that in time. But I wanted to thank you guys mostof all. Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promiseit will be rewarded.”

Cavill was certainly patient when it came to plotting his return to the DCEU.The actor filmed his last scenes as Superman — a role inherited fromChristopher Reeve, among others, starting with 2013’s Man of Steel andcontinuing in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice — during thereshoots for Joss Whedon’s theatrical version of 2017’s Justice League.Since then, the Man of Steel has been spotted only fleetingly in the DCEU, andnever with Cavill in the costume.

It took Black Adam __ himself to bring Superman back into the fold. DwayneJohnson personally appealed to Warner Bros. heads, Michael De Luca and PamAbdy, to make a deal with Cavill — who is represented by Johnson’s manager andex-wife, Dany Garcia — and that flurry of activity resulted in the mid-creditsscene being filmed in secrecy in September.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter ‘s Behind the Screen podcast, themovie’s cinematographer, Lawrence Sher, revealed that neither hero was on setat the same time for their brief encounter. Instead, Johnson filmed his halfof the scene during Black Adam ‘s additional photography in Atlanta, whileCavill’s portion was shot in London. “There are certain people that are iconicas the characters that they play, and he’s really one of them,” Sher recalledof seeing the initial footage of Cavill’s return.

Although news of Superman’s appearance leaked in advance of Black Adam ‘sopening day, Cavill remained studiously out of sight. Now, though, you canexpect to see a lot more of Superman. according to THR , Warner Bros. is inthe early stages of prepping Man of Steel 2 and there’s still time forCavill to shoot cameos in upcoming DCEU fare that’s set for release in 2023,including Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.(There’s also Ezra Miller’s standalone Flash movie, although that movie isfacing its own troubles.)

But the main event will be the Superman v. Black Adam movie that Johnson iseager to get off the ground. “Dude, that was always the plan,” the action startold USA Today . “Establish Black Adam as the most powerful andunstoppable force on this planet. And if we do that right, let’s take the mostbeloved superhero in the world, of all time, that’s been idle and sitting onthe sideline for five years. Let’s fight , and let’s not take no for an answerand let’s bring him back.”

On Twitter, Cavill champions promptly unleashed five years worth of pent-upenthusiasm for their hero’s return.

Black Adam is playing in theaters now.

Adidas silent as pressure mounts for company to drop Kanye West

As pressure mounts for brands to cut ties with Kanye West, the rapper’sbiggest corporate partner remains awfully quiet: Adidas. But West’s formerpartner, Kim Kardashian, (sort of) broke her silence on Monday as CAA droppedWest as a client.

Adidas started working with West in 2013, but after his “White Live Matter”stunt earlier this month, the company issued a statement saying it isreviewing the relationship. However, in the days that followed, the musicianwent on to spew antisemitic remarks and even taunted the company that it can’tsever ties with him. The Adidas-Yeezy partnership is one of the mostsuccessful fashion collaborations in recent years.

“I can say antisemitic things, and Adidas can’t drop me. Now what? Now what?”West declared on the Drink Champs podcast. (It’s the same podcast where heerroneously claimed George Floyd died from fentanyl, not police brutality.Floyd’s daughter plans to sue West for $250 million.)

West’s hateful rhetoric is landing with antisemitic groups as one ralliedsupport for the Grammy winner and displayed the following sign on the busy LosAngeles 405 freeway on Saturday: “Kanye is right about the Jews.”

The Anti-Defamation League urged Adidas to end its relationship with west.

“In light of Kanye West’s increasingly strident antisemitic remarks over thepast few weeks, we were disturbed to learn that Adidas plans to continue torelease new products from his Yeezy brand without any seeming acknowledgmentof the controversy surrounding his most recent remarks,” the group said in astatement.”We urge Adidas to reconsider supporting the Ye product line and toissue a statement making clear that the Adidas company and community has notolerance whatsoever for antisemitism.”

David Schwimmer, Kat Dennings, Josh Gad and Valerie Bertinelli are among thestars publicly calling out Adidas to end the relationship. A Change.orgpetition has over 80,000 signatures and counting.

Adidas did not respond to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment on Monday.

Kim Kardashian has publicly remained silent about the controversial past threeweeks. That changed on Monday, and while she didn’t call out the father of herfour children directly, she posted a statement in support of the Jewishcommunity.

Khloé Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kris Jenner posted similar messages onsocial media that read: “I support my Jewish friends and the Jewish people.”

CAA dropped West as a client, variety confirmed on Monday. A completeddocumentary about the entrepreneur will be shelved in light of thecontroversy.

“This morning, after discussion with our filmmakers and distribution partners,we made the decision not to proceed with any distribution for our recentlycompleted documentary about Kanye West. We cannot support any content thatamplifies his platform,” MRC studio executives Modi Wiczyk, Asif Satchu andScott Tenley announced in a memo Monday.

“Kanye is a producer and sampler of music. Last week he sampled and remixed aclassic tune that has charted for over 3,000 years — the lie that Jews areevil and conspire to control the world for their own gain,” they add. “Thesilence from leaders and corporations when it comes to Kanye or antisemitismin general is dismaying but not surprising. What is new and sad, is the fearJews have about speaking out in their own defense.”

Last week, Balenciaga became the first major company to drop West in the wakeof the controversy. JPMorgan Chase ended his banking relationship with thefashion designer. Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel, one of the most influential peoplein Hollywood, wrote an op-ed for Financial Times __ and urged companies —like list includes Apple, Spotify and Adidas — not to do business with West.Emanuel’s rivals came together in a show of unity.

Bob Gersh, head of Gersh Agency, spoke to variety and supported Emanuel’smessage.

“This is as low as it can get,” Gersh said of West’s recent comments. “This isthe most blatant form of hatred and antisemitism one could imagine. It doesn’tget any worse than this. People really need to hammer these companies inbusiness with him to impress upon them how wrong it is to support somebodylike this. “

UTA co-founder and CEO Jeremy Zimmer followed suit, and in company-wide memo, said the company supports “the boycott of Kanye West. Powerful voices spewinghatred have frequently driven people to do hateful things.”

Marc-Marie Huijbregts speaks about Glennis Grace: ‘She came out of the vagina angry’

In the podcast ‘Marc-Marie & Aaf Find Something’ Marc-Marie talks about themuch-discussed interview at Jinek. Glennis said, among other things, that shedid not fight at all in the Jumbo supermarket, but did give a staff member ‘apunch in the face’. According to Marc-Marie, this is not true.

‘You were born bright’

According to him, she would have given more than ‘just’ a push. ‘You were justborn fierce. She just came out of the vagina angry,” he says. The midwife alsogave them a shove in the face,” jokes the comedian.

“What kind of education is this?”

Glennis Grace tried to get sympathy from the viewer with the interview andapologized for the supermarket riot. ‘I’m a mother, I don’t want to see mychild like this. It has gotten really out of hand, which was absolutely notthe intention,” she said. Huijbregts does not understand what her mother’sheart has to do with this. ‘If you are a mother, you still want to raise yourchild. What kind of education is this?’

Eva Jinek

In the podcast Marc-Marie also has something to say about Eva Jinek. Althoughhe is a big fan of the presenter, he thinks she should have given ‘a littlemore resistance’ during the interview with Glennis.

get a story

By his own account, Glenda Batta’s son, as Grace’s real name is, came homefrom shopping with a bloody face. Thony would have smoked an electroniccigarette in the store, after which he was pushed out of the case. He wouldhave fallen with his face against a rack, Grace says. Grace went to thesupermarket to get a story, but didn’t feel taken seriously and gave a staffmember ‘a punch in the face’. Furthermore, Grace did not fight, but there was’a lot of running around behind each other’. That took about four minutes.

Beaten to the point of bleeding

An eyewitness to the violence that night told Story a completely differentstory. “I was just standing in the store at the time and saw the employee whohad previously kicked Anthony out of the store was caught by several men. Theysat on top of him and punched him in the face. Until bleeding. They went onand on and shouted: We know who you are. We know where you live. We arewaiting for you and we will catch you again later.

‘Glennis dealt the first blow himself’

The eyewitness continues: ‘I heard and saw how Glennis was stirring up hervigilante group. The store staff told me that Glennis was the first to punchthe employee most affected. In addition to Glennis, I saw five peopleparticipating. One of those guys was filming the event with his phone. I justspoke to one of the two victims. He told me that they (Glennis’ thugs – ed.)were ten or more people in all. That would also explain how they were gonejust before the police arrived. Someone would have been on the lookout.”

Before the judge

‘I would fake back injuries’

Matthew Perry’s memoir is filled with raw details about his raging addiction.

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing goes on sale Nov. 1, but a newinterview and book excerpts reveal in shocking detail the depth of the53-year-old actor’s struggles with alcohol and opioids. Among the disclosuresis that Perry estimates he has spent $9 million to get frugal. He currentlyhas 18 months of sobriety, meaning he got sober again just prior to the 2021_friends_ reunion, after nearly dying when his colon burst from opioid misusein 2018. More details of that dramatic near-death experience, including thathe had to learn to walk again, have also come to light.

Perry was just 14 when he started drinking. At 24, he had joined the cast of_friends_ and his alcohol addiction was starting. It morphed into drinkingvodka by the quart and taking 55 Vicodin a day.

“I would fake back injuries. I would fake migraine headaches. I had eightdoctors going at the same time,” Perry told the New York Times of his doctorshopping at the height of his struggles. Perry, who also abused OxyContin andXanax, said, “I would wake up and have to get 55 Vicodin that day, and figureout how to do it. When you’re a drug addict, it’s all math. I go to this place, and I need to take three. And then I go to this place, and I’m going to takefive because I’m going to be there longer. I wasn’t doing it to feel high orto feel good. I certainly wasn’t a partier; I just wanted to sit on my couch, take five Vicodin and watch a movie. That was heaven for me. “

Today, Perry estimates, “I’ve probably spent $9 million or something trying toget sober.”

That’s a staggering amount even for someone with his wealth, famously pullingin $1 million an episode the last two seasons of friends. His effortsincluded 15 stints in rehab, more than 25 drug detoxes, long-term stays insober homes and employing a sober companion to be with him at all times tokeep him from using. He said he’s spent more than half of his life intreatment centers or sober living facilities.

While starring on friends , which ran from 1994 to 2004, he struggled, butwas supported by his castmates. He recalled Jennifer Aniston coming to him atone point, “in a kind of weird but loving way,” and saying that the group knewhe was drinking again. “‘We can smell it,'” she told him. Another time, thecast confronted him in his dressing room.

He also revealed that right after shooting Chandler and Monica’s wedding in2001, he “got driven back to the treatment center — at the height of myhighest point in friends the highest point in my career, the iconic momenton the iconic show — in a pickup truck helmed by a sober technician.”

Among other revelations in the book, according to the NYT , is that Perryhad short-lived, alcohol-induced erectile dysfunction amid his struggles. Healso carried his top teeth in a baggie in his pants pocket to his dentistafter he bit into peanut butter toast and they all fell out.

Perry shared for the first time that he’s 18 months sober, something hewouldn’t reveal at the start of his press tour last week. Last year’s famous_friends_ reunion on HBO Max shot in April 2021, meaning he was newly drug-and alcohol-free. (Much was made at the time over his slurred speech, whichwas attributed to dental work.) He said he works every day at his sobriety andemploys “a couple of people on the payroll to keep me safe,” including a sobercompanion. He’s become a mentor for others and sponsors three members inAlcoholics Anonymous.

“It’s still a day-to-day process of getting better. Every day. It doesn’t endbecause I” wrote a book, which he started, on the Notes app of his iPhone, while hospitalized for five months after his colon burst due to his opioidabuse.

Over the weekend excerpts from the book ran in the UK’s The Times _,_including one about Perry’s 2018 hospitalization when his colon burst. He wasgiven a 2% chance of surviving as he went into emergency surgery, was in acoma for two weeks and had a colostomy bag for nine months as he recovered. Healmost didn’t make it to the hospital in the first place.

At the time, he was living in a sober living house in Southern California. Hehadn’t had a bowel movement in 10 days and felt “like my body was going toburst. Like my insides were trying to force their way out. This was the no-f***ing-around kind of pain.” He was advised by a staffer to take an Epsomsalts bath to alleviate the “discomfort.” He recalled being naked and in suchpain he was “howling like a dog being ripped to shreds by coyotes.”

His assistant Erin was there and suggested he go to the hospital, but thestaff thought Perry was exhibiting “‘drug-seeking behavior. He’s going to askfor drugs at the hospital.'” After a standoff with employees trying to blockthem from leaving , Erin drove him to the hospital as Perry recalled that his”belly was twisting in agony.”

“If I were just doing this to get drugs, then I deserved an Oscar,” hethought. He was taken into surgery and didn’t open his eyes again for twoweeks.

“The first thing that happened when I lapsed into a coma was that I aspiratedinto my breathing tube, vomiting ten days’ worth of toxic s*** directly intomy lungs,” he wrote. “My lungs didn’t like that very much — enter instantpneumonia — and that is when my colon exploded. Let me repeat for those in theback: my colon exploded!”

He underwent a seven-hour surgery during which time his loved ones gathered atthe hospital and received the grim news that he had “a 2 per cent chance ofmaking it through the night.” He made it through and was put on life support, via an ECMO machine (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), for two weeks whilehe remained comatose.

“Eventually, my eyes magically opened,” he wrote. “The first thing I saw wasmy mother. ‘Your colon exploded,’ Mom said. ‘It’s amazing that you’re alive,’she said. ‘Your resiliency is incredible. And with some life changes, you’regonna be OK And they can remove the colostomy bag in about nine months.'”

He didn’t move or talk for two more weeks, he said, and he had to relearn howto walk.

“I had been inches from death because of something that I had done,” he wrote.I was attached to 50 machines, and I would have to learn to walk again. Ihated myself. I almost killed myself. The shame, the loneliness, the regretwere too much to handle. I just lay there, trying to deal with all of it, butthere was no dealing with it. It had already been done. I was afraid to die, which was in direct opposition to my actions.”

Excerpt in a second The Times Perry recalled going though his 55-pill-a-daypainkiller habit during the friends era .

“I’ve detoxed more than 25 times in my life — but the first was when I was26,” he wrote. “My Vicodin habit had kicked in badly. If you watch Season 3 of_friends_ , I hope you’ll be horrified at how thin I am by the end of theseason (opioids f*** with your appetite, plus they make you vomitconstantly),” he wrote. “You can track the trajectory of my addiction if yougauge my weight from season to season — when I’m carrying weight, it’salcohol; when I’m skinny, it’s pills. When I have a goatee, it’s lots ofpills.”

By the end of that season is when he was taking the 55 pills a day “otherwiseI’d get so sick. It was a full-time job: making calls, seeing doctors, fakingmigraines, finding crooked nurses who would give me what I need.”

During that time, he made the movie Almost Heroes with Chris Farley. the_Saturday Night Live_ star “was just as funny as you’d imagine, though hisaddictions, plus mine, meant that we barely were able to even finish thef***ing thing,” Perry wrote. “I was shooting friends and Almost Heroes atthe same time, and I was tired. The pills were not doing what they used todo.” He recalled retching on the set between exchanges with directorChristopher Guest, explaining, “I vomited behind trees, behind rocks, inladies’ rooms.”

Before the movie came out, Farley died at the end of 1997.

“His disease had progressed faster than mine had. Plus, I had a healthy fearof the word ‘heroin,’ a fear we did not share,” he wrote. “I punched a holethrough Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall [on the Friends set] when Ifound out. I had to promote Almost Heroes two weeks after he died; I foundmyself publicly discussing his death from drugs and alcohol. I was high theentire time.”

Perry wrote about multiple trips to treatment and detoxing for the first of 25times during the friends years. However, he didn’t work toward getting tothe surface at what was causing his addiction.

“I had learned precisely nothing about what was wrong with me,” he wrotefollowing his first rehab stay. “I hadn’t learned about Alcoholics Anonymous,or how to live a sober life; I’d just gotten off the Vicodin.” He drank 68days later, and then eventually resumed taking pills in a harrowing cycle thatwent on for years.

Perry was interviewed by Diane Sawyer for a special that will air on ABC Newson Friday at 8 pm He’s also doing a book tour, which kicks off Nov. 2 in NewYork City.

‘I Am Back as Superman’

Henry Cavill posted to social media on Monday that he is “back as Superman”following his cameo in the post-credits scene of “Black Adam,” which opened onFriday to $140 million worldwide.

More from Variety

“I wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting this because Iwanted to give you all a chance to watch ‘Black Adam,’” Cavill said in a videoposted to his Instagram feed. “But now that plenty of you have, I wanted tomake it official: I am back as Superman.”

Cavill said the image of him in the Superman suit included in the Instagramvideo and his “Black Adam” cameo “are just a very small taste of things tocome.” The 39-year-old actor gave no further detail, but he did thank the fansfor their enthusiastic response to his return as the last son of Krypton.

“Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience,” Cavill said. “Ipromise it will be rewarded.”

The news comes after years of rumors, cameos and fan speculation aboutSuperman’s long-awaited return in the DC Universe. Dwayne Johnson has alsobeen hyping up a showdown between his anti-hero Black Adam and Cavill’sSuperman while promoting his film in the recent weeks.

Cavill first originated his Superman nearly 10 years ago in 2013’s “Man ofSteel.” He has played the Son of Krypton just a handful of times since then:in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” 2017’s “Justice League,”2021’s “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and a brief post-credits cameo in “BlackAdam.” (Superman as a character showed up at the end of 2019’s “Shazam!” butCavill did not play the role, which was shot from the neck down.)

For many fans, Cavill seemed preternaturally destined for the role, betweenhis uncanny handsomeness and superhuman physique. But all of his outings asSuperman proved to be controversial for one reason or another. Some fans loveddirector Zack Snyder’s physically robust, emotionally anguished and morallyambiguous approach to the character, while others found it antithetical towhat has made Superman one of the most enduring superhero characters ever.

Story continues

Cavill always seemed caught in the middle. The actor was seemingly left behindwhen Warner Bros. elected to part ways with Snyder and his creative vision forthe DC Universe, which placed Cavill’s Superman at its center. But the actor —who has kept busy on Netflix fronting the popular fantasy series “The Witcher”and playing Sherlock Holmes opposite Millie Bobby Brown in the “Enola Holmes”films — has not been shy about expressing his desire to continue donningSuperman’s tights and cape .

JJ Abrams’s Bad Robot, meanwhile, has been slowly developing a separate BlackSuperman project with author Ta-Nehisi Coates for over a year with no furtherannouncements. New Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has reportedly beenfrustrated that the character has been gathering dust while Marvel Studioscontinues to pump out at least three feature films a year.

Johnson and his producing partners, meanwhile, have made clear that theirlong-term vision for Black Adam includes a robust storyline involvingSuperman.

“It’s never been about a one-off or just about a fight,” producer Hiram Garciarecently said. “We really want to craft a long-form of storytelling and showthat these two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have todeal with each other often, either on the same or opposite sides. Hopefullythey’re going to clash at some point, but it’s not just about a ‘one fight’situation.”

Viewers disappointed after the final ‘Klopjacht’, detective Bieke nuances: “If they had used accomplices, they would have won”

In the first season of Manhunt two duos crossed the finish line, this year thevictory is for the detectives. Brothers Kevin and Gillian and girlfriendsZahna and Nisrine were caught in the last minute before the end. How? Thedetectives discovered where the extraction point was for the finalists, whereall mobile teams – six people in total – surrounded the helicopter that thecandidates had to reach in order to win. A mission impossible which ended withthe four survivors in handcuffs.

The detective team did a strong job, but according to critical viewers theydid receive a lot of help. “Click line, detectives around the heli… very easyto tell everyone understanding”, it sounds. “Before the end of Manhunt Theyhave to invent something else next year. Impossible to win”, someone tips.

Good guess

Speurder Bieke has a lot of praise for the duos, but at the same time nuancesthe criticism. “We really gave it to the finalists, because they played reallywell. But we also worked very hard”, says the inspector. “They knew where theextraction point was, we didn’t. By smart gambling, and by mistakes of thehenchmen of the duos, we were in the right place. Then it became verydifficult for them.”

It was Zahna and Nisrine’s friends who gave the detectives the ultimate tipabout the extraction site. The helicopter was supposed to land at the fortressof Borsbeek, so the friends sent accomplices to explore the area and check ifthere were detectives present. “That couple behaved very suspiciously,” saysBieke. “They kept walking in circles, taking pictures of Jeremy all the time(one of the detectives, ed.). We took a gamble and assumed that the fortressof Borsbeek was the right place.”

A gamble, because the ‘reconnaissance’ could also have been a diversionarymanoeuvre. “If the duo’s accomplices had sent any of the other possible placesto explore, so to speak, we would have walked right in. Then we would havegone to a wrong place and they would have won.”

A heart for the police

Inspector Bieke looks back on the experience with satisfaction. Although shewas sometimes shocked by the comments. “I get criticized for being quiteharsh. But suppose that tomorrow your child disappears, then wouldn’t you alsowant us to work with such enthusiasm? In real life, we also do our job thatway.”

Should she return in the third season, she hopes that the human side of thedetective team will also be shown. “When it became too much for candidates oraccomplices, we hit the pause button and became normal people again. WhenLothar’s mother was upset, when that one woman wouldn’t give us the locationof the twins… I chatted with them for a long time, as a human being. I can bevery sweet too (laughs). It would be nice if viewers could see those behind-the-scenes moments anyway. So they know we’re not animals.”

Bieke emphasizes that the investigators are all creams are of people. “We arepeople with a very big heart, but also with a heart for the police,” sheconcludes.
