Swedish satire ‘Triangle of Sadness’ wins European Oscars, ‘Close’ misses the prizes | Movie

MovieThe black comedy ‘Triangle of Sadness’ by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlundraked in all major European Film Awards on Saturday night. The Belgian drama’Close’ by Lukas Dhont failed to win any prizes. The Dutch production ‘Knor’by Mascha Halberstad also goes home empty-handed.

In the often hilarious ‘Triangle of Sadness’, a young couple is followed on acruise trip. On board, model Carl and influencer Yaya are among the verywealthiest, such as a Russian oligarch and a couple who trade in arms. Whenthe ship sinks and the passengers have to survive on a deserted island, thehierarchy changes dramatically. Because do the wealthy passengers actuallyknow how to make a fire?

The inky black comedy, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes festival earlierthis year, won three important prizes in addition to ‘best film’. RubenÖstlund – also creator of previous winner ‘The Square’ from 2017 – was namedthe best director and the best screenwriter. Leading actor Zlatko Buric, whoplays a chronically drunk Russian oligarch, received the award for best actor.

In addition to the prices

The Belgian ‘Close’ by Lukas Dhont, about the close friendship between twoteenage boys who come under pressure due to the reactions of the outsideworld, participated in several categories. But none of the nominations werecashed in. The drama is still being tipped as a potential winner at theupcoming Oscars.

The Dutch pig ‘Knor’ also did not win a European Film Award. Director MaschaHalberstad sat cautiously hopeful in the hall of the imposing Harpa buildingin Reykjavik, but saw how another film was crowned best animation production:the French ‘No Dogs or Italians Allowed’. Years of work went into ‘Knor’,about the friendship between a girl and a pig. Halberstad got her images byphotographing figures made of cloth and fleece shot by shot. By playing theseimages one after the other, it seems as if the puppets are moving. At thebeginning of October ‘Knor’ was the big winner at the presentation of theGolden Calves.
