She edited the trilogy that killed workaholic Kieslowski

In the early 1990s, Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941-1996) was atthe height of his fame. As king of the European art house film, he stoodalone. After the success of his TV series Decalog (1988) he worked inFrance, where he La double vie de Véronique (1991) and an ambitious trilogybased on the French flag: Blue , White and Rouge (1993-1994). He was ina hurry; the three parts had to premiere at the Venice, Berlin and Cannes filmfestivals. That worked: Kieslowski won a Golden Lion and a Silver Bear. Butbroke itself.

Even when he was still working in Poland, Kieslowski was already a realworkaholic. In his native country he made no less than 26 documentaries infifteen years, after which he switched to feature films. But in the mid-1990s,it seemed. Deadly tired and a bit tired of filming, the taciturn, meekfilmmaker announced Rouge to take early retirement. In 1996 he died suddenlyat the age of 54 of a heart attack. Like his father, he had weak lungs. Theravages he committed on his body during the trilogy, coupled with the factthat he was a heavy smoker, killed him. __

Kieslowski’s sudden death came as a shock to Catherine Cormon, assistanteditor at the Three colours -trilogy. She remembers Kieslowski as an“energetic man, great to work with, but also nervous and a chain smoker.“Kieslowski knew that editing was a way of ‘finding’ his film, as a sculptoralready sees his image in a lump of marble.

“The screenplay was never sacred. A good example is the assembly of Rouge. In a first version, the parallel between the lives of a young law student andan old judge was strengthened, later it was weakened. The emphasis is now onhow the judge changes through his contact with Valentine.”

Six cans of film

The French trilogy was shot in three countries in succession and editedsimultaneously. Blue and a small portion of Blanc were recorded in Paris. The rest of White was shot in Warsaw. Because both films were edited inParis and Kieslowski was already in Warsaw, the French editor Jacques Wittatraveled a number of times with the ‘work print’ of Blue in his luggage toPoland. Cormon: “A work print is much longer than a feature film, Witta had tocarry about six cans of film and six cans of sound recordings, fifty to sixtykilos, every time he went to Poland.”

This cumbersome work process then changed the crew Rouge began. The lastpart of the trilogy was shot in Geneva, where the editing team also settled.Work was feverish in the editing room on both Blue if Rouge. __

Cormon: “As soon as Kieslowski had time, he came to the editing room. Duringthe day he shot, in the evening he watched the rushes (the daily recordings)and commented. That also really paid off. For example, Kieslowski was notsatisfied with the third dialogue between the judge and Valentine Rouge. Inthe end he decided to base the editing not on speaking, but on listening. Youmainly see them listening to each other. That made it such an impressivescene.”

“Collaboration was very important to him anyway. At the projections of theunfinished films, there were always people he trusted who asked for theiropinion: ‘tell me what doesn’t work, I already know what’s good about it.’ Hewas very open to suggestions. As a result, the atmosphere in the editing roomwas always exciting, passionate and extremely committed. He asked 100 percentof everyone, the maximum. Whoever gave that, received recognition andgratitude, he was generous in that. When entering or leaving, he always saidhello to everyone, including the trainees.”

Thirty years later, she considers herself especially lucky to have been ableto work with the Polish maestro. “It was my best editing job ever.”

Catherine Cormon will speak at Eye Filmmuseum on February 26 about hercollaboration with Krzysztof Kieslowski.

Although the actor proclaims his innocence and he has not yet been charged, the Académie des Césars promptly removed him from the list of nominees. “Outof respect for the possible victims,” it sounded. Now, the same organizingcommittee has decided that anyone who is active in the film world and “isdiscredited for sexual or sexist misconduct that can be prosecuted”, is nolonger welcome at the award ceremony. Other invitees are also not allowed tospeak “on behalf of this person” on stage, even “if he or she emerges as thewinner after the second round of voting”.

In this way, the Académie hopes to avoid a repeat of the Polanski polemic from2020. “Lynching by the media”

The decision to deprive Bennacer of his nomination did not go down well witheveryone. Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, director of the film, called the allegations”a lynching by the media”. She admitted knowing about the allegations, but “Itold the producers these rumors wouldn’t stop me and I couldn’t imagine makingthe movie without him.” Also her half-sister, pointed out premier lady CarlaBruni-Sarkozy, intervened in the debate: she believes that Bennacer’spresumption of innocence, “one of the foundations of the rule of law”, hasbeen violated.

“The presumption of innocence is always sacred. Always,” says ChristineMussche, the lawyer who represented victims in two historic MeToo trialsagainst Bart De Pauw and Jan Fabre. “That is why I always advocate the utmostcaution and discretion while the investigation is ongoing. Especially insituations where it is word against word, you cannot be discreet enough. However, if several complaints come up, then you are in a MeToo dynamic, andexperience shows that people do not freely make such serious accusations. Ofcourse I don’t know the French case, I can only hope that the people of thatAcadémie have not rushed ahead, but have thought carefully first, because thereputation of that young actor has been damaged enormously.”

R. Kelly Silenced Aaliyah and Her Family With Non-Disclosure Agreement After Marriage Annulment, Docuseries Reveals

R. Kelly silenced Aaliyah and her family through a non-disclosure agreement, following his marriage and subsequent cancellation to the then 15-year-oldsinger.

The new allegations were made in the final installment of Lifetime’s“Surviving R. Kelly,” which aired on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3. The docuseriescentered around R. Kelly’s 2022 federal trial where the NDA was brought up inthe courtroom as evidence. The late Aaliyah was Jane Doe #1 in the trial.

More from Variety

“Surviving R. Kelly” utilizes Aaliyah’s story to spotlight her as a victim ofR. Kelly, after years of the media and music industry scandalizing hermarriage to the now-convicted singer in the 90’s.

Aaliyah’s debut album in 1994 was titled “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number” andwas recorded when she was 14-years-old. R. Kelly — who was Aaliyah’s mentorand was first introduced to her by her uncle, music executive and managerBarry Hankerson — was a lead songwriter and producer of the album. At the timethe album was released, rumors circulated that there was a relationshipbetween the 15-year-old Aaliyah and the 27-year-old R. Kelly.

The pair secretly married in August 1994. Aaliyah was 15 at the time, but themarriage certificate falsified her age as 18. The marriage was canceled byAaliyah’s parents in Feb. 1995.

In “Surviving R. Kelly,” on-camera interviews with individuals from R. Kelly’scamp who were in the room when the duo wed express their regret about themarriage. Individuals who were close to both R. Kelly and Aaliyah share newdetails about the legal agreement that was allegedly forged between R. Kellyand Aaliyah’s family.

Members of Aaliyah’s family declined to comment to producers of “Surviving R.Kelly,” per a statement that aired as part of the Lifetime docuseries.

Story continues

A childhood friend of R. Kelly and his former security, Gem Pratt, appears in“Surviving R. Kelly” and claims that Aaliyah’s father was furious about themarriage and forced the cancellation. Pratt alleges that Aaliyah’s family hada contractual arrangement with R. Kelly that stated they wouldn’t presscharges against him for the illegal marriage after it was cancelled; in turn,R. Kelly sold the rights to his first three albums to Aaliyah’s family, givingthem a financial incentive.

“Her dad didn’t want her anywhere near him,” Pratt says in the docuseries.

Various on-camera guests in “Surviving R. Kelly” described the marriage as away to get R. Kelly to avoid jail time for statutory rape of a minor.

The final episodes of “Surviving R. Kelly” devote time to covering theenablers in R. Kelly’s camp, who turned a blind eye to his abuse over threedecades and helped the convicted musician make arrangements to see hisvictims, including booking flights for underage girls to cross state lines forprivate meetings. One prosecutor who appeared as a legal expert in thedocuseries described R. Kelly as “running a criminal enterprise.” Anotherexpert said “everyone had a financial incentive to look the other way.”

“He couldn’t do this by himself. It’s impossible…It’s clear as day there wereenablers,” said R. Kelly’s former security guard, Pratt. He later said, “Thiswas not a one-man operation. Most people in that camp knew that a lot of thesegirls were underage. They had to.”

The NDA was brought up in R. Kelly’s New York trial in 2022, but did notreceive widespread coverage. The use of NDAs has become a hot-button issue insexual harassment cases, particularly in the workplace, highlighting animbalance of power with the perpetrator or corporations silencing victimsthrough forced legal documents.

Prior to R. Kelly’s trial, journalist Jim DeRogatis — the reporter who firstbroke news of R. Kelly’s sexual abuse more than two decades ago — uncoveredthe NDA that R. Kelly used against Aaliyah. A few years ago, DeRogatis spokeabout the documents that were leaked to him, stating in an interview that theannulment and Aaliyah’s legal claim against R. Kelly had been sealed.

“It’s a harrowing document,” he said. “A non-disclosure agreement on both herpart and Kelly’s, vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physicalabuse. So, it wasn’t just an underage sexual relationship, he hit her, allegedly, according to that court document.”

Speaking to variety about the final installment of “Surviving R. Kelly,”executive producer Jesse Daniels said that the producing team was careful notto exploit Aaliyah in the docuseries, and hoped to highlight the abuse shetragically endured by R. Kelly when she was a teenager. “We have had a lot ofconversations about how to tell Aaliyah’s story every time because we reallywant to be respectful of her legacy. But what she went through, we can’t turnour backs on,” said Daniels.

Disney is struggling with almost expired copyright on characters

In less than two years, Disney will be entering uncharted territory when itcomes to copyrighting certain characters. The rights that allow Disney toprotect its famous characters then begin to expire. The first figure to whichthis applies is the primal version of Mickey Mouse from the short film’Steamboat Willie’ from 1928, the predecessor of the current Mickey Mouse. That writes The New York Times.

“We will continue to make every effort to avoid consumer confusion due to> the unauthorized use of Mickey, or any other iconic character.”

The Disney group is known for being very strict when its characters are usedwithout permission. In the past, for example, lawsuits were filed against adaycare center in Florida that had put a drawing of Minnie Mouse on the front. In 2006, the company intervened when the image of Winnie the Pooh was placedon a gravestone of a child.

Disney will release a documentary about Marvel writer Stan Lee next year

In the article, experts wonder what exactly Disney can do if these charactersbecome part of the public domain and how the company will react. The ‘early’version of Mickey Mouse can now be used without Disney’s permission if thecopyright expires at the end of 2024. In the course of the following decades, this will also apply to other iconic characters of the group.

However, Disney does retain the trademark on the specific imagination ofcertain characters. This ‘trademark’ was actually created to protectconsumers, so that they know that a certain characteristic symbol or imagethat is very specifically associated with a brand is of high quality. Forexample, the ears of Mickey Mouse fall under this legislation. Disney has themouse out Steamboat Willie , so the ‘primal Mickey’, added to the logo forall its cinema films since 2007. This has made the connection with the companyof this particular image stronger from a legal point of view.

Disney + also comes with a cheaper subscription with advertising

The company said in a brief statement to the New York Times that “the Mickeyfrom Steamboat Willie is inextricably linked to our company, and that willnot change if the copyright expires in the future.” Disney pledges to”continue to make every effort to avoid consumer confusion due to unauthorizeduse of Mickey, or any other iconic character.”

Over the years, US copyright law has changed a number of times. With the lastadjustment in 1998, the copyright period was extended from 75 to 95 years. Itis still unclear whether Disney will try to have the law changed, as thecompany has done in the past. In that case, Mickey Mouse could perhaps beprotected longer against a possible takeover in the public domain.

VANHESTE “It’s a combination of factors. She really needs to rest, andshe’s having a hard time with that. But I urge her not to go back to workuntil she feels 100 percent again. I know how important that is.”

HUMO You yourself balanced on the edge of a burnout during the recordings.

VANHESTE (nods) “The problem was that I was working with fear as thedriving force. I took over the business five years ago, after my father passedaway unexpectedly. I was so afraid of failing or losing my job that I said yesto everything. Customers sensed that, and some have benefited from it: ‘Wouldyou like to do that too?’ I worked 16-hour days, but I barely got anything outof it. According to the calculations of Kamal Kharmach I didn’t earn morethan 3.5 euros an hour.”

HUMO You received tips from him and from Wouter Torfs, the CEO of SchoenenTorfs, but in the end the conversation with psychologist Elke Van Hoof seemedto have helped you.

VANHESTE “That’s right. I received good tips from Wouter and Kamal, butbefore that conversation with Elke I was unable to do anything with them. Mybucket was just too full. The appointment with Elke was the turning point. Shetaught me to focus. I now ask myself every morning: where do I want to go? Shealso taught me to keep work and private life better separated, for example bygoing for a walk. This is how you close one hatch and start another.”

HUMO Were there, in retrospect, alarm signals that you went beyond yourlimits?

VANHESTE “I had a total lack of energy. I squeezed out what little I hadleft at work, then it was gone. I also felt bad all the time. I wondered if itcould still work out. When you’re in that deep, everything really gets caughtup in your head.

“I also had physical complaints. My neck hurt constantly. It was the same withmy wife. She had started jogging again, but she suffered one injury afteranother, and it never stopped. The doctor finally put his finger on the wound:when your mind is exhausted, your body will also struggle.”

HUMO According to the figures of the RIZIV/RIZIV, the number of people sittingat home with a burnout or depression has risen fastest in the self-employedcategory: from 3,300 to 5,000 in four years. The self-employed would also waitlonger to seek help, which would only exacerbate the problems.

VANHESTE “That is very recognizable. I also knew that I was not doingwell. People have been advising me for a long time to slow down, or even sellmy business. But I didn’t care about that. I had built something and I didn’twant to give it up. I had to keep going, even though it made me go way beyondmy limits.

»Entrepreneurship is wonderful, but you have to be strong. Consumers arebecoming more and more demanding. For many, ‘good’ is no longer good enough.Others try to get the most out of it and demand more and more service for lessand less money. Thanks to Elke, I can deal with that better now too. Whencustomers insist on a discount, I answer: ‘I don’t give a discount, but I dogive a correct price.’ I explain that price differences have to do with thematerials used, and that they should not compare apples with oranges. I alsowant to add that it can take several months before everything is ready. Peopleappreciate that clarity, and for me it was much more pleasant to work thatway. At least, until my wife fell out.”

HUMO Are you taking over her job now?

VANHESTE (nods) “My brother Joren is already up to his ears in work.We could temporarily hire someone, but that is not easy. My wife was trying tobring structure to the chaos, but her work was not yet finished. You can’tjust hand that over to an outsider. Training someone would take me so muchtime that I’d better just do it myself.”

HUMO Many companies also have the greatest difficulty in filling vacancies.

VANHESTE “It’s a disaster. You can still find administrative employees, but not people with a technical profile. We are urgently looking for atechnical draftsman who can assist my brother, as well as two extra workersfor the workplace. Well, we just don’t find anyone. And if someone isavailable, you feel that he is also talking to the competition. Sometimes theycome home from a rude awakening. A while ago one of our employees left. Hisnew boss had promised him all sorts of things, but six months later he stillhadn’t received a company car.

“I’m not going to participate in such an auction anyway. I pay my employeeswell and if I can do something to make work more enjoyable, I will do it. Butpay shouldn’t be the only motivation. Such a person will leave as soon as hegets a better offer. I prefer to invest in a long-term relationship.Especially in a small family business like ours, the working atmosphere isvery important.”

HUMO What can we wish you for 2023?

VANHESTE “That my wife can come back to work soon (laugh). But she can’tdo that until she feels completely better.

»2022 was a challenging year, but I now feel that we are well on our way tobecoming a stable company. The accountant has just informed us that ourfigures look much better than the year before. Then we were also able to closethe year with a profit, but you don’t want to know how hard we had to work forthat. Now it was a lot more livable, and at the same time I learned to makemore time for myself and our family.”

Three Divergent movies

Netflix kicks off 2023 with all three divergent movies. The franchise thatinitially The Hunger Games seemed to follow effectively, but scored lesswith each film. With an IMDb score of 6.6, the series immediately starts withanything but a high-flyer, and the next two films score even worse. This test will determine her destiny, but not only for herself, but also for everyone around her. IMDb Score: 6.6, 6.2, 5.7

Gigantic cinema flop still a big hit on Disney + and beats Avatar

Everest (2015)

This thriller is based on a true story, namely that of two teams who went on aclimbing expedition to the top of Mount Everest in 1996. When they face amassive blizzard, it’s all about survival. Baltasar Kormakur delivers anintense piece of drama that is definitely worth checking out if you’re evenremotely interested in the sport. Even without climbing equipment in theattic, this thriller will not disappoint you.

IMDb Score: 7.1

Triple 9 (2016)

Not every movie has to be an Oscars nominee. Want mindless, hard-hittingpopcorn action and an entertaining story? Then is Triple 9 , despite themediocre IMDb score, a very suitable candidate. In Triple 9, corrupt cops areassigned to pull off a robbery for the Russian Mafia. To keep their crimeundisturbed, they devise a perilous plan for diversion. With Casey Affleck,Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anthony Mackie, among others.

IMDb Score: 6.3

Sausage Party (2016)

We stay in the ‘sixes on IMDb’ regions for a while. Animation film SausageParty guarantees an evening full of hilarity, provided you can handle thewell-known silly humor of Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill. Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiigand Jonah Hill voice the sausages, yes, sausages, who search for the reasonfor their existence. Their origin. No, we didn’t come up with it either. Afterchecking out ten seconds of the trailer below, you probably already know ifyou’re going to fall completely flat with laughter, or that _Sausage Party_absolutely not for you.

IMDb Score: 6.1

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is definitely the better animated movie in thislist of new Netflix movies. Toothless and Hiccup must do everything they canto defend the Dragon Mountain together with hundreds of dragon warriors. DragoBloodfist and his dragon hunters are after them. A spectacular war film, insofar as that can be the case with a children’s film. However, even as anadult fan of the better animation work, this film is definitely worth checkingout on Netflix.

IMDb Score: 7.8

Fear (1996)

Time for another thriller. Nicole Walker, a 16-year-old girl, meets DavidMcCall at a party. He is handsome, charming and attentive – in short, he seemsperfect. But soon Nicole discovers that David has a dark side that makes hisobsession with her increasingly dangerous. An intense film that takes you intothe dark world of stifling relationships and psychological manipulation, starring Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon.

IMDb Score: 6.2

The Snowman (2017)

The Snowman should have been a bull’s eye, with a hell of a book byacclaimed thriller author Jo NesbØ as source material, Thomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ) as director and Michael Fassbender in the leadrole. When Harry Hole, a detective from a specialist crime unit, investigatesa woman’s missing during the first snowfall of winter, he begins to fearanother elusive serial killer is on the loose. That sounds like the beginningof a very exciting thriller, but it is absolutely true here that you betterread the book. The 5.1 on IMDb is unfortunately not an exaggeration: TheSnowman falls foul. Even the director agrees, blaming it on too little timeand an unfinished script.

IMDb Score: 5.1

Hard Target 2 (2016)

In case of hard target 2 the lousy IMDb score isn’t necessarily deadly. Thelead role is played by Scott Adkins, just about the most prominent stuntmanand fight scene specialist in Hollywood at the moment. In other words, you geta movie full of crazy stunts and hard action. For subtle and strong acting, itis better to turn on another movie on Netflix. Adkins plays Wes Baylor, adown-and-out martial arts fighter who is invited to fight in Thailand. There, however, the fork turns out to be different: the fighter is released into thejungle, after which they start hunting him. A deranged one man hunt butabove all: a good excuse for an endless series of spectacular fight scenes.

They are frustrated, angry and disappointed. Krista from Wognum and’colleague’ Simone from Hoogkarspel, who both manage a giveaway box. Thecabinets were looted this week by the same group of people and damage was evencaused to Simone and a cabinet in Enkhuizen. “This is not what you do it for.”

Gift boxes looted – NH News

Krista Leussink and Simone Oudt actively support people who are strugglingfinancially. With well-stocked giveaway cupboards in the garden, from whichpeople can grab a few items at a time. Think of food and personal careproducts. They receive these goods through donations. “I think 10 to 12 peoplecome here every day,” says Simone, who also has a mini-library. “Some comelate at night or at night, probably out of embarrassment.”

On New Year’s Eve, the group of 6 or 7 people came into the picture for thefirst time. With Krista Leussink in Wognum, who was not at home at the time.”I received a notification on my phone from my camera that there was movementat the giveaway cabinets. I saw them pack a lot of stuff and they also stayedin my garden for a long time, about 10 minutes.”

Empty cupboards

When she came home, she found empty cupboards. “The shelf with the careproducts on it was almost empty. A lot of products were missing from thecupboard with food. It is very clear what the rules are. That a maximum of 4products can be taken at a time. And also that there are cameras .”Previously, Krista had successfully approached a couple about their ‘buyingbehaviour’. “They said that they also brought things for others. But itdoesn’t work that way.”

After a call on Facebook, a large part of the goods are returned the next day.”Apologetics were also offered, they said they did not understand Dutch. So Ithought that was the end of it,” says Krista.

Simone Oudt from Hoogkarspel – NH News / Michiel Baas

Until she receives a message from ‘colleague’ Simone, with whom she has goodcontact. Half an hour after the apology in Wognum, she had a group at herneighborhood cupboard De Anemoon. “They first rang the doorbell and asked whatthe rules were, simply in Dutch.”

When she went to look a little later, the result was: a lot of stuff gone, broken pots of vegetables on the floor and a destroyed cupboard. When seeingKrista’s images, the two know enough: they are dealing with the same ‘shoppingpublic’.

They know that a similar box has also died in Enkhuizen. It is not knownwhether this was also done by the same group.

“Someone could have eaten those broken jars of vegetables again”>> Simone Oudt, Neighborhood cabinet ‘De Anemone’

Simone takes a deep breath as she refills the closet. “I am frustrated, angryand very disappointed in this group of people. I really hope they don’t comehere anymore. I think those broken jars of vegetables are perhaps the worst.Someone else could have eaten them again.”

“You don’t do it for this. Let’s hope this was the last time,” Krista saysdisappointed. “But I’m not one to give up easily,” says Simone. “So we willcontinue, for the people who do appreciate it. I have decided to buy cameras.Too bad it has to be like this.”
