‘Spotify, Netflix and TikTok bring certain songs back to the attention’

Kate Bush is – for now – barely a footnote in the history of De Tijdloze. Goodfor a handful of quotations with a twentieth place for ‘Wuthering Heights’ as- again provisional – highlight. In 1998 she disappeared from the top 100. Forgood everyone thought then. But that was outside Stranger Things counted. Inthe fourth season of that Netflix hit, the song ‘Running Up That Hill’ popsup. The song is suddenly streamed en masse and rises to the top of the chartsworldwide 37 years later. A remarkable comeback that will undoubtedly benefitthe British singer in De Tijdloze.

Not only Kate Bush benefits from her musical guest appearance StrangerThings. The gentlemen of Metallica also appeared in the series. With a suddenincrease in interest in the song ‘Master of Puppets’ as a result. In DeTijdloze that song was once number ten, but in the meantime it dropped to 25thplace. The expectations are that James Hetfield and his colleagues will alsobe able to count on a slightly higher listing this year.

Stranger Things is not the only Netflix series with musical impact. ThibaultChristiaensen, appearing in the podcast Thank you boomer about the timelesscharacter of artists bow, The Cramps also sees doing beautiful things in DeTijdloze this year. Thanks to Wednesday a new Netflix hype in which maincharacter Wednesday Addams goes crazy on the dance floor to the sounds of ‘GooGoo Muck’.

The advance of Fleetwood Mac in De Tijdloze is due to TikTok. Nathan’Doggface’ Apodaca dropped a skateboard video of himself there to the tune of’Dreams’, one of the band’s hits. The video went viral and Fleetwood Macsuddenly became hip with an audience with an average age well below that ofthe band members. With all the consequences for their Timeless ranking.

Wider look

Now De Tijdloze also had to deal with trends in the past. For example, artistswho confuse the temporary with the eternal often suddenly appear in the upperregions of the list. “A documentary or a film about a certain band or artistcan also do wonders for their position in the list,” says Stijn Van de Voorde, list fetishist and this year also presenter of De Tijdloze. “Even publishing abest of has its effect.”

But while in the past it was mainly the typical Timeless bands that benefitedfrom such trends, the view of the new generation of voters is much broader.“There are so many ways to discover music these days,” says Van de Voorde.“There is of course Spotify, but Netflix or TikTok, for example, alsohighlight certain songs. And unlike before, they are only judged on how theysound. The question of whether you can find a certain song or a certain bandokay has long since been asked.”

blonde. Image

blonde.

Van de Voorde talks about his own sixteen-year-old daughter who sometimessings songs only to discover to her own surprise that it is an old song ofwhich her father also appears to know the lyrics. “Like many of her peers, shepicks up such songs and adds them to her playlist without knowing the contextof such a song. The only thing that matters to them is the sound.” Whichsometimes leads to strange scenes. “It is bizarre to hear sixteen andseventeen year olds singing along on Crammerock when you put on ‘Call Me’ byBlondie.”

In recent years, this open mind has been increasingly reflected in DeTijdloze, where traditional toppers such as Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin arefinding it increasingly difficult to maintain themselves in the upperechelons. “People used to compile their top three from songs that were in thelist anyway,” notes Van de Voorde. “Nowadays, that selection is viewed muchmore broadly.”

Refresh vs. status

That ensures renewal in the list. Although the size of this should not beexaggerated, says music history teacher Gert Keunen. “We still often see thesame songs popping up in De Tijdloze. Numbers that – precisely because theyhave been in that list for years – have built up a certain status and aretherefore chosen again and again. Because let’s be honest, a song like’Bohemian Rhapsody’ may already be a tradition in De Tijdloze, it’s notexactly a song that you will put on for fun on the other days of the year.”

Deep Purple has a subscription to the Timeless, the question is whether thatwill remain the case. Image BenHoudijk

Nevertheless, those classics will also become increasingly difficult in thelong term, predicts Van de Voorde. Precisely because the new generation ofvoters is mainly guided by how a song sounds. “And with bands like Deep Purpleor Led Zeppelin, that sound is very vintage. Those songs are just not freshanymore.”

Although Van de Voorde keeps a blow to the arm. “For the same money, the soundof Deep Purple will be completely in again within twenty years. Or Netflixwill soon use ‘Child in Time’ as a soundtrack for one of their series and thesong will be at the top again next year.”

Dick Clark’s new year’s rockin’ eve with ryan seacrest 2023

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What are you most excited for viewers to see onthis years broadcast?

RYAN SEACREST: Every year, the show gets broader and bigger. For example,we have three ball drops where we only had one for a long time. We’re indifferent places this year. It’s very exciting. Ciara will host at Disneylandwith some of the biggest artists of the year. I will have Duran Duran in TimesSquare, which I’m very excited about because that’s what I grew up with. BillyPorter’s back, Liza Koshy’s back, the show has really grown into amultifaceted live broadcast. And it’s the longest show that I’ve hosted, it’sfive hours plus, live. But that makes it exciting.

Story continues

How do you prepare for your hosting duties the week leading up to thebroadcast?

I get to New York on the 27th and we start going through the show, therundown, the artists and the weather. But it’s all pretty fluid, it changes asthe day goes on. I like that if it’s gonna rain, if it’s gonna snow, if it’sgonna be windy, it kind of changes how we create the narrative. But for me,that’s fun. The artists normally show up on time. There’ve been a few artiststhat almost didn’t make it, very close to midnight, which was a very stressfulmoment for me on the air. But it normally comes together and even the momentsthat aren’t perfect become the moments that people talk about.

Which artists have arrived late before performing live?

I hate to name the person, but it’s a very big pop star who wants to bail outof the show about an hour before her performance at 11:45 pm, because of theweather, which would create a huge problem for us. She didn’t want to go outthere and do her choreography on stage in the rain. Fortunately, we talked herinto it, but it was a pretty big panic. You’ve also seen Mariah Carey on theshow twice. Where she had a performance and then came back to have anotherperformance. I think those moments are what make the show so great.

You ‘ve been hosting Dick Clark ‘s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve since 2006. Whatdoes it mean to you to be a part of a program that’s a tradition in so manyhouseholds around the country every New Year’s Eve?

For me, I’m so grateful that I stepped into this role because it was atradition for me growing up and my family. We would order pizza and watch theshow. I think the idea for us is just to create a big party for people whodon’t want to go anywhere, who want to just relax, be in their homes, be withtheir families, order pizza, order buffalo wings, whatever it is . We canbring the excitement, the energy and the new year to them. That’s what Dicktold me all along. He goes, “we’re talking to people who are at home, but webring the excitement to them through our show.”

This year, CNN has decided that their anchors will need to scale back ondrinking for their New Year ‘s Eve show. What do you think about theirdecision to cut back?

I don’t advocate drinking when one is on the air. I don’t know how thatstarted as a tradition, but it’s probably a good idea [to scale back], CNN.There’s some pretty respectable people or at least one, right? I think there’sa serious journalist and then a friend of mine who has a lot of fun, but it’sprobably a good idea. Although the viewers probably wish they would drinkmore. But I think they had something to say about my show at one point, whichwas I’m sure from the alcohol because, I don’t think they would say what theysaid about our performers if they weren’t drinking. But, you know, I think ourshow’s a bigger, broader show and we won’t drink until 1:05 in the morning.Although, I might send them some Casa Dragones Tequila just to tempt themwhile they’re on the air.

Have any co-hosts or artists shown up to the show tipsy?

Yeah, probably quite a few. I think Post Malone was definitely enjoyinghimself before he went out. But it’s amazing, artists can still hit theirmarks, they can do their songs while drinking. Luke Bryan, who I worked withon american idol , he can have a couple of drinks and still nail it. For me,it’s a little more intense. I prefer not to do that on a live broadcast so Iget the countdown right, I don’t want to screw it up.

What does your after party look like once the show ends?

So, 1:05 am I think I’ve finished. 1:35 am I try to find a restaurant thatwill serve dinner. I’m actually exhausted by the time it gets to 1:35, but I’mstarving cause I don’t eat before the show. And we have a very civilized,eight-person dinner with elevated street food, finger foods, and a greatbottle of Italian wine.

What was it like hosting the show during the pandemic? How has it changedsince?

In 2020 going into 2021, we were out there alone which was very difficult. Iactually thought it would be okay, but to not have anybody out there in theaudience, no energy out there, it was hard. There was no one to talk to, youhad to fill up a lot of time. So I’m happy to see that revelers will be backout there again and enjoying it from all over the world. But it was tough todo during the pandemic, very tough.

Any favorite performances from past years?

For me it’s when my friends perform. Taylor Swift is amazing. J.Lo of course, incredible. I’m always blown away at how great they are on that stage. I thinkit’s one of the most vulnerable performances because you’re outside, you’re onthe stage, the elements are cold or rainy or windy, and you still have toperform. So I give everybody a lot of credit for doing it. For me it’s thepeople that I actually know and hang out with that I love to see perform. Iwas just thinking that one year Lionel Richie should do it because he’sincredible and he’s on idol and he would be such a crowd pleaser. So Ipitched him for a New Year to do it, so we’ll see.

Whoopi Goldberg discusses past Holocaust comments, makes new controversial statements

Whoopi Goldberg is talking again about whether the Holocaust, which involvedthe murder of 6 million Jewish people, was racially motivated.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times of London, shared during Hanukkah,Goldberg suggested Jews are divided about whether they are a race, religion orboth.

“My best friend said, ‘Not for nothing is there no box on the census for theJewish race. So that leads me to believe that we’re probably not a race,'” sherecalled.

When The Times journalist Janice Turner mentioned racially divisive laws setby Nazis aimed at Jews, “The View” cohost insisted that the Holocaust “wasn’toriginally” about “racial” or “physical” attributes.

“They were killing people they considered to be mentally defective. And thenthey made this decision,” she said.

Whoopi Goldberg said the Holocaust wasn't initially aboutrace.

Turner continued to push back, telling Goldberg, “Nazis saw Jews as a race.”

“Yes, but that’s the killer, isn’t it? The oppressor is telling you what youare. Why are you believing them? They’re Nazis. Why believe what they’resaying?” the “Till” actress responded.

Goldberg added, “It doesn’t change the fact that you couldn’t tell a Jew on astreet. You could find me. You couldn’t find them.”

The actress was previously suspended from “The View” in January for similarremarks. Addressing those comments, she said, “That was the point I wasmaking. But you would have thought that I’d taken a big old stinky dump on thetable, butt naked.”

‘ I don’t know how we survived’: A new generation of anti-Semitism wethought was behind us

Goldberg’s comments to The Times of London are being met with backlash. “Thisis one of the times where I think someone should force Whoopi Goldberg to goto a Holocaust museum and learn about the Nuremberg laws,” video game directorLuc Bernard wroteon Twitter.

“Someone tell Whoopi her remarks are still abhorrent and ignorant even whenspoken to a British paper,” Boundless Israel founder Aviva Klompaswrote.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Goldberg, the Anti-DefamationLeague and “The View” for comment.

Whoopi Goldberg was previously suspended from ‘The View’ over her remarksabout the Holocaust

Goldberg’s new comments echo remarks she made about the Holocaust on “TheView,” which led to a suspension in February.

ABC News president Kim Godwin said that Goldberg would be suspended from “TheView” for two weeks effective immediately for “her wrong and hurtfulcomments,” in a statement shared with USA TODAY on Feb. 2.

“While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learnabout the impact of her comments,” Godwin added. “The entire ABC Newsorganization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, familyand communities.”

Goldberg posted a now-deleted **** statement expressing her”sincerestapologies” onTwitter on Jan. 31, after the episode aired, also echoing a statement fromAnti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt who wrote that the Holocaust”was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people – who theydeemed to be an inferior race .”

“On today’s show, I said the Holocaust ‘is not about race, but about man’sinhumanity to man.’ I should have said it is about both,” she wrote. “I standcorrected. The Jewish people around the world have always had my support andthat will never waiver. I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused.”

On the show the following day, she addressed the controversy again, saying she”misspoke.”

“My words upset so many people, which was never my intention,” she said. “Iunderstand why now, and for that I am deeply, deeply grateful, because theinformation I got was really helpful and helped me understand some differentthings.”

What did Whoopi Goldberg say about the Holocaust?

Goldberg made her initial comments during a discussion about a Tennesseeschool board banning the book “Maus” from the eighth-grade English andlanguage arts curriculum.

The graphic novel, written by comic artist Art Spiegelman, tells the story ofhis Jewish parents living in 1940s Poland and follows them through theirinternment in Auschwitz. Nazis are portrayed as cats, while Jewish people areshown as mice.

“If you’re going to do this, then let’s be truthful about it, because theHolocaust isn’t about race,” Goldberg said at the time. “It’s about man’sinhumanity to man. That’s what it’s about.”

Co-host Joy Behar chimed in, saying, “Well, they considered Jews a differentrace,” in reference to the Nazis. Anna Navarro also pushed back, saying, “Butit’s about white supremacy.”

Goldberg doubled down.

“But these are two white groups of people,” she said. “You’re missing thepoint. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talkabout it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. Itdoesn’t matter if you’ re Black or white, ’cause Black, white, Jews …everybody eats each other.”

The whole of Holland Bakt scores a scoop, but there is also a ‘crime scene’

Bake, bake, bake and bake (or cook) some more. This is probably how manypeople have felt in recent days, in preparation for the many Christmasdinners. How nice is it to watch other people baking after dinner, with a fullbelly of course? And then also completely in the Christmas spirit. That’sexactly what viewers got All of Holland bakes yesterday, where they were notonly served a scoop, but also had to swallow ‘a crime scene’.

Many viewers on social media also note that because of that big Christmasdinner, they didn’t feel like the baking they saw on their television. It’sthe first time in ten seasons All of Holland bakes that there will be anepisode on Christmas Day. If you want to take a little trip in time: Subway_recently spoke Sarina, who is the third season of _All of Holland bakes won. That was in 2015, she owes a lot to her title ever since.

Scoop for Christmas episode Heel Holland Bakt

As said, last night was the very first episode of All of Holland bakes whichcoincided with Christmas Day. And that also means that there is a Christmasmaster baker for the first time. Viewers of the popular baking program inwhich ‘normal bakers’ compete with each other for who is the best baker sawZineb being crowned Christmas master baker yesterday. Jury member Janny vander Heijden praised the ‘balance’ in her baking, Robèrt van Beckhoven had fewwords enough: “Really great”.

‘Crime scene’ of a baking

The assignment, which Zineb eventually won, was to make a wreath cake. ‘Wreathshit?’, I hear you think. No, kransekake, a nut tree with rings. Simpleenough, you would think. But it turns out to be more difficult for the bakersthan expected. According to viewers, Ingrid even creates a crime scene.Another goes for the term ‘pure horror’. But that doesn’t matter, as long asit’s tasty, right? Van der Heijden went for the words “quite funny” and “veryyou”. Whether the latter is a compliment, given viewer comments, is open tointerpretation.

“I taste black pudding,” jokes André van Duin when he tastes a piece. Robèrt:”In terms of presentation, it seems like you thought ‘I’m done with it’, butwhat I do think is great is the taste.” For him, the combination of cinnamonwith berries and a salty pistachio nut especially stands out. “Not so pretty, but very tasty,” he emphasizes.

No matter how ‘terrifying’ Ingrid’s baking was, she can stay in the tent foranother week. Unfortunately, Sander has to close the oven and say goodbye.According to Janny, he takes risks, but he can also go too far. That hasn’tworked out well for him this week.
