The number 9 to 5 wrote Parton for the film of the same name, which alsomarked her acting debut. Actress Jane Fonda, who also stars in 9 to 5 ,approached Parton for a role in the film. “It’s a great opportunity, but I’llonly do it if I can also do the title music,” Parton had said. And so shewrote the song during the recordings, which was released in 1980 a monthbefore the film premiere.

The song is about working women who say they are overworked, undervalued andunderpaid. It was a statement about gender inequality in the workplace.
