French court drama ‘Saint Omer’ wins top prize at Film Fest Gent

The French court drama Saint Omer by Alice Diop was awarded the Grand Prixfor best film at Film Fest Gent. The Ukrainian Klondike and the Costa Rican-Belgian co-production Tengo suenos electricos receive an honorable mention, while the Swiss Three Winter receives the Georges Delerue Award for bestmusic.

Ewoud CeulemansOctober 21, 202220:30

Six years ago, French director Alice Diop attended the trial of FabienneKabou, a young woman accused of murdering her 15-month-old baby in 2013. Up tothat point, Diop had only made documentaries, but the Kabou case provided theinspiration for her first fiction film, Saint Omer. It was awarded the GrandPrix for best film on Friday evening at the 49th edition of Film Fest Gent. This price is linked to a distribution premium of 10,000 euros and a mediacampaign of 12,000 euros, of which 5,000 euros in cash The morning. Afterthe documentary Petite fille and the dementia drama Vortex it is the thirdFrench film in a row to win the top prize in Ghent.

Saint Omer mainly takes place in court, where writer Rama (Kayije Kagame)follows the trial of Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanga): a young woman fromSenegal who studies philosophy in France and becomes pregnant by an elderlyFrenchman. She hides the pregnancy and the birth, and deliberately lets thebaby drown in the sea. During her trial, she claims she was bewitched andcursed.

The strength of Saint Omer is that Diop gradually merges her two maincharacters. Both Rama and Laurence have a troubled relationship with theirmother and with their own role as a mother – Rama also hides her pregnancyduring the process – and feel like an outsider in France. Diop follows thelawsuit in a measured, almost distant style: the shots are held for so longand the camera is so still that you, as a viewer, get the feeling that you arestaring at the characters uncomfortably.

The jury was “captured by the rigueur and the modesty in both the directingand the performances in this exceptional film. The question of what we haveinherited from the previous generation and what we pass on to the nextresonates on many levels and is intelligently woven into a drama that gripsthe throat and resonates for a long time to come.”

Saint Omer previously won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, whereDiop also won the Best Debut award. The film is the French Oscar entry forbest foreign film, so it has to compete with Lukas Dhonts close , but alsowith many other films from the competition at Film Fest Gent. TheAnachronistic Sissi Drama Corsage is the Austrian entry, the current one_Klondike_ set against the backdrop of pro-Russian unrest in the Donbas regionin 2014, is the Ukrainian candidate. Klondike by director Maryna Er Gorbach, received an honorable mention from the jury at Film Fest Gent, just like the__ coming of age movie Tengo suenos electricos a Costa Rican-Belgian co-production by Valentina Maurel.

Finally, there is the Swiss Oscar entry, Three Winter by Michael Koch: aquirky directed drama set in a mountain village. That film, with a score byTobias Koch and Jannik Giger, was awarded the Georges Delerue Award for bestmusic in Ghent. In that score, the sacred choral singing stands out the most.”The performances and the framing of the singers, as if they were telling aGreek tragedy, fascinated us and the music is perfectly attuned to the whole”,the jury found.

This year’s jury consisted of filmmaker and former Grand Prix winner ClioBarnard, actor Welket Bungué, director Alexandre Koberidze, editor NicoLeunen, composer Daniel Hart and filmmaker Nathalie Álvarez Mesén.

‘Shantaram’ looks nice, but the series never becomes excellent

Lately it seemed like AppleTV+ could only make great TV shows. After a lessimpressive start in 2019 with the messy but nevertheless quite popular TheMorning Show , the streamer hits almost every time this year. With theoppressive psychological thriller Severance the fun spy series Slow Horses_and the beautiful Korean family epic _pachinko as highlights.

Shantaram , which, like the last two titles, is based on a worldwidebestseller, has everything on paper to be added effortlessly to that growinglist of impressive series. A well-known actor in the lead role (CharlieHunnam, known for Sons of Anarchy ), a huge budget and the ability to tell alayered story in multiple countries.

Shantaram is an adaptation of the semi-autobiographical novel by GregoryDavid Roberts, which was published in 2003 and has already sold 6 millioncopies. Like the book, the series tells the story of Australian bank robberDale Conti (Hunnam) who escapes from prison in broad daylight in the early1980s and flees to India with a false passport. In Mumbai, at that time stillBombay, he becomes Lindsay Ford (the name in the passport) and tries todisappear into the chaos of the metropolis.

Something that he does very badly. Not even halfway through the first episode,he ends up – at the invitation of a mysterious but beautiful expat – in a cafethat he describes in the voice-over as a place where hookers, dealers, gamblers and gangsters sit side by side. Dangerous people who “could kill eachother at any time,” Linsday said. Yet he willingly associates with thesepeople, despite his own drug history that led him to rob banks, and theenormous guilt he carries with him for the latter. It doesn’t take long beforehe has to run again.

Two failed attempts

This time he ends up in the slums of Bombay, in the hut of his local guidePrabhu (Shubham Saraf). There he decides to use his medical knowledge (beforehe robbed banks, he was an ambulance worker in Australia) to help the poorresidents. A twist in the story that could quickly have gone wrong – white man’rescues’ poor residents of the slum. Fortunately, it is approached a littlemore nuanced, although the storyline does feel a bit cliché. A feeling thatthe series evokes on several occasions.

Ever since the book came out in 2003, attempts have been made Shantaram toget to the screen. After two expensive but failed attempts to make it into amovie, the rights were sold to AppleTV+ in 2018. But there too the filming ofthe book, which has nine hundred pages, did not run smoothly. After shootingthe first two episodes, production was halted in 2020 because the path takenwas too dark. A new showrunner, Steve Lightfoot ( Behind Her Eyes ), evenhad to be put on. Lightfoot claims to have started writing the script fromscratch.

The series that debuted on AppleTV+ last week does indeed feel fairly light, despite the heavier topics. Even though Lightfoot didn’t quite manage to keepthe twelve hours really interesting. After only three episodes, there aresimply too many characters and not all equally interesting storylines to holdthe attention. Even the fact that the muscular Hunnam – who really doesn’tshow bad acting here often takes his shirt off – can’t save things.

The series looks beautiful, as we are used to from AppleTV+. But it never gets

Teddy bear becomes killing machine: Disney has lost influence on Winnie the Pooh | Movies & Series

There is something fundamentally different about the latest film aboutchildren’s character Winnie the Pooh: this time his honey jar is filled withthe blood of his victims. the horror movie _Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey_is certainly not intended for minors. And Disney really has nothing more tosay about that.

By Esther Villerius

Until a few years ago, the specter that director Rhys Frake-Waterfield nowportrays of Pooh was impossible. A large company such as Disney has strictcopyright rules. That means that not everyone can just make productions withthe popular Disney characters.

So Frake-Waterfield does, and how: in Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey wesee a Winnie à la Leatherface in Chain Saw Massacre. The bloodthirsty andhaggard Winnie the Pooh and Piglet in the film are out for revenge on theirfriend Christoffer Robinson, who abandoned them.

There are plenty of killings and scenes where it’s not clear whether Pooh’smouth is dripping with honey or with bodily fluids. How did it get this far?

Winnie the Pooh was conceived in 1926 by author Alan Alexander Milne andillustrator Ernest Shepard. Disney bought the bear’s exclusive licensingrights some forty years later. So Winnie the Pooh has been copyrighted fordecades. But these rights have expired since the beginning of this year.

United States copyright law dictates that a work may be held for ‘only’ abouta hundred years before it becomes part of the public domain again. The popularteddy bear is now public property.

Piglet is clubbing people with a sledgehammer

That does not mean that everyone can do everything with the character. Disneystill owns the rights to its own version of Winnie the Pooh, as most peopleknow the bear.

That is the version with the yellow bearskin and the red T-shirt, which wasonly created in 1966. Any remakes should therefore not be too similar to theDisney variant. In Frake-Waterfield’s case, it isn’t either: the lovely, gullible bear is nowhere to be seen.

For his version of Winnie, Frake-Waterfield based himself on the Pooh from1926. The mask has kept the honey yellow color, but there is something offbalance. Pooh has aged. He has wrinkles and his facial expression is no longersmiley, but dead.

Piglet isn’t doing too well either: the previously shy piglet is now clubbingsomeone in the pool with a sledgehammer. He looks a lot more terrifying with afew extra tusks, but “it’s definitely Pooh and Piglet,” says Frake-Waterfield.Dread Central.

Winnie’s other animal friends, such as Tigger, cannot be seen in this film. Not yet. The copyright rule still applies to characters such as Tigger, because this character was only created later. But his license will alsoexpire on January 1, 2024.

Piglet helps Winnie the Pooh kill people in revenge.

Disney can and will not say anything

Disney does not want to go too deeply into questions from NU.nl about thestriking developments surrounding Pooh. “The rights of Winnie the Pooh arefree. We wish the distributor good luck with the release.” The film studioalso emphasizes that it is not a Disney film.

The greedy and somewhat silly bear can now take on all kinds of forms. “Wehave a lot of quirky ideas,” Frake-Waterfield tells Dread Central. “Thereare other characters in this universe, but I can’t touch them. I don’t want tostep on anyone’s toes either. I’ve tried to stay as far away from the Disneyside as possible. And I hope, because I I’ve done a good job, I can now make a

‘I Don’t Have Beef’ With Someone ‘Dealing With a Mental Health Issue’

In a behind-the-scenes TikTok video posted by “The Daily Show,” host TrevorNoah shut down an audience member who asked him why he is beefing with KanyeWest. An alleged beef between the two took place earlier this year after Noahcondemned West for his incessant trolling of ex-wife Kim Kardashian on socialmedia. West responded by directing a racial slur at Noah on Instagram, whichled to West being temporarily banned on the platform for a day.

“Why am I beefing with Kanye? That’s an interesting way to phrase it because abeef has to go both ways,” Noah told the audience member. “Genuinely it does.In my limited understanding of the world, beef has always been something thatgenerally will happen between two hip hop artists. I’ve never beefed withKanye West. I was concerned about Kanye West.”

More from Variety

West has courted controversy over the last few weeks for making racist andantisemitic comments in various interviews. West has said during pastcontroversial media blitzes that he struggles with mental illness, which hasled to people defending West this time around regarding his antisemiticcomments. Noah did not specifically address West’s latest comments, but he didquestion why the media is continuing to give West a platform when it’s knownthat he has mental health issues.

“If somebody says to me that they have a mental health issue,” Noah said, “andthey say to everyone that when they don’t take their medication they’re unableto control themselves, and then everyone ignores when that person is having anepisode and they haven’t taken the medication, and then they platform theperson and then they put them up…I sometimes think it’s a little shitty, to behonest with you.”

Story continues

“My grandfather was bipolar,” Noah continued. “I’m not saying Kanye is. I’mjust saying my grandfather was bipolar, and one thing we knew was when he washaving one of his episodes. He could act in a certain way and could do certainthings…but our job was to support him. It would be weird if I was there going,’Oh, my grandfather’s having an episode again. I’m going viral tonight!’ Ithink it’s a little bit strange.”

“I don’t have beef with a human being who has expressed openly that they’redealing with a mental health issue. I don’t have beef with that human being,”Noah said. “What I have beef with is us as society not coming together aroundthe person and going like, ‘Hey, maybe this is not the moment to put amicrophone in your face so that you just go off saying everything.’ If this iswhat you want to say when you’re on your medication, then that’s a differentstory. But because you’ve told us that, I’m not going to sit by and say that.”

Noah concluded by saying he has “never had beef” with Kanye West, adding, “I’mstill playing ‘College Dropout.’ I’m still playing the music. I still love theman that I think he is. And I understand that he’s gone through a lot, youknow, and I don’t take that for granted. But I’ve promised myself I’ll neverbe the person who just sits by and gleefully says things about people that Icare about and then also joins the group of mourners afterwards and acts likeI wasn’t part of it. Too many people like to mourn you when you’re dead andthey don’t say anything to you when you’re alive. So I don’t know where toend. But that’s it.”

The TikTok below is not the first time Noah has addressed his relationshipwith West. During an August 2022 interview on Varieties Awards CircuitPodcast, the host spoke about why he decided to make public comments aboutWest’s behavior in the first place.

“I’ve just become more comfortable speaking my mind in situations where I feellike the mob forgets that we’re dealing with human beings,” Noah said at thetime. “It’s easy to stand on the sidelines, see a train crash coming and saynothing about it. And then after the train crashes off the tracks, we say,’Oh, I saw that coming!’ Well, then why didn’t you say anything? Especially ifyou have some sort of platform, you have some sort of obligation to speak atruth. You know, see something and say some thing.”

Noah’s latest comments followed Howard Stern’s viral reaction to West’santisemitic comments. Stern compared West to Hitler and criticized West’sdefenders who say the rapper has mental health issues.

“Fuck this mental illness, self defense thing that he’s into,” Stern said.“You know, like, ‘Oh yeah, he’s just mentally ill. Don’t worry about it…’ Ifhe’s so mentally ill, why don’t they appoint a conservator over his money likethey did with the poor Britney Spears?”

‘Black Adam’ Post-Credits Scene With [SPOILER] and More Easter Eggs Explained

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses several major plot elements throughout“Black Adam,” now playing in theaters.

Dwayne Johnson has long promised that “the hierarchy of power in the DCUniverse is about to change” with his movie “Black Adam.” Now that it’sfinally released in theaters…will it change anything?

More from Variety

The post-credits scene certainly hopes so. Fans had long been clamoring forJohnson’s super-strong villain to face off against another all-powerful DChero: Henry Cavill’s Superman. Johnson himself had been teasing the showdownat this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and on the “Black Adam” world premiere redcarpet. Much to the fans’ delight, Johnson and the “Black Adam” team listenedto their request.

Cavill’s Superman does appear in the post-credits scene, and there seems tobe some hostility between him and Black Adam. But first, the scene starts outwith Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller (who’s been pulling the strings behind theSuicide Squad in not one, but two movies) sending over a drone to talk withBlack Adam. Waller isn’t too happy with Black Adam after he escaped from herunderwater prison — which was run by “Peacemaker” character Emilia Harcourt(Jennifer Holland) in a fun cameo.

peacemakerpeacemaker

peacemaker

Waller tells Black Adam that he has her attention, and she’ll let him go freeas long as he doesn’t step foot outside his home country, Kahndaq. Black Adamsmirks, saying, “There’s nobody on this planet who can stop me,” which promptsWaller reply that there’s someone not from this world who can help her. Sureenough, Superman, the last son of Krypton, crashes down from above in a cloudof dust. As the Man of Steel emerges from the smoke, he tells Black Adam, “Weshould talk.” And then the movie cuts to black.

Story continues

Does this mean we’re getting a Black Adam-Superman fight in a prospectivesequel? As with most things in the DC Universe right now, it’s unclear. Whilemany of the upcoming movies on DC’s slate — “Shazam: Fury of the Gods,” “TheFlash,” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” — do exist in the same cinematicuniverse, these movies are largely unconnected, and the chances of anothercameo from Cavill or Johnson in them seem pretty slim. There have beenunconfirmed reports about a second Superman movie with Cavill, but nothing hasbeen announced, let alone greenlit.

Man ofSteelManofSteel

Man of Steel

“Black Adam” producer Hiram Garcia has said that a Superman battle wouldn’tjust be a one-off movie, however. “It’s never been about a one-off or justabout a fight,” he recently told CinemaBlend. “No, it’s about so much morethan that. We really want to craft a long-form of storytelling and show thatthese two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have to dealwith each other often, either on the same or opposite sides. Hopefully they’regoing to clash at some point, but it’s not just about a ‘one fight’ situation. That was never our dream. That does not reward the fans. Fans want to feel ajourney between these guys knowing that these guys exist in the sameuniverse.”

Outside of Superman, “Black Adam” has a few more Easter Eggs up its sleeves. The Justice Society of America heroes, made of Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), DoctorFate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) and Cyclone (QuintessaSwindell), make their big-screen debuts and have some comic-book nods.

Black Adam JusticeSocietyBlackAdam JusticeSociety

Black Adam Justice Society

Atom Smasher explains that his suit allows him to change the structure of hisatoms and grow to a gigantic size. As we’re introduced to him, he gets aFaceTime call from his uncle Al Pratt, who was the older hero Atom in the DCComics and passed down his suit. In a hilarious cameo, the Fonz himself, HenryWinkler, plays Pratt.

Hawkman, the leader of the Justice Society, has a comic-accurate costume, complete with wings and a hawk helmet. He mentions that his spaceship is madefrom Nth metal, the precious alloy from the planet Thanagar that’s also usedin his mace.

In the comics, Cyclone is the granddaughter of Abigail Mathilda “Ma” Hunkel, who was the first superhero to go by Red Tornado. As a child, Cyclone waskidnapped by the mad scientist TO Morrow, who also created an android namedRed Tornado, and has nanobytes injected within her, which are the source ofher elemental powers. In “Black Adam,” Cyclone briefly mentions her past, particularly the nanobytes, to Atom Smasher, who’s shocked by her originstory.

Though he sadly dies, Doctor Fate puts up a fight against Marwan Kenzari’svillain Ishmael, who turns into the demonic monster Sabbac. When Doctor Fatedons his gold helmet and uses his magical powers, his voice is deeper andotherworldly. That could be because his powers come from an ancient, cosmicbeing named Nabu, who grants the mystical abilities to whoever wears theDoctor Fate helmet. With Brosnan’s Doctor Fate dead, there may be someone elseto take up the mantle in a second, like the current DC character KhalidNassour.

“I learned so much going through that, like how you can’t predict howsomething’s going to be received. You can’t predict any of it. And I was youngenough then where I was like, ‘I’m funny, I ‘ll be funny about this.’ But ifthat happened today, I would not be doing bits around it. I’d be as quiet andboring as possible,” Kroll said of the moment.

Asked if that experience “prepared” him for Don ‘t Worry Darling‘s talked-about press tour, Kroll said, “It prepared me to be part of something thateveryone was interested in, but here’s the difference: The Don ‘t WorryDarling trailer came out, and people were excited about it. People have beenthinking about this movie for a while.”

He explained, “Then all of the mishegas happens, the drama around the moviestarted to take hold, and I was not a part of any of that. I’m not distancingmyself at all, I just wasn’t doing press at that point.”

Patrick Kicken: Ruud de Wild’s days seem numbered, Eddy Keur does it time and again for him

[BLOG] Something you ‘ve been hearing for years and perhaps experiencingyourself is that Dutch radio is dying. Almost nothing happens that stillappeals to the imagination, everyone neatly finishes his or her playlist, if aradio producer is already in the news, it is because he wants to sleep in anextra day a week. What a poverty, you often hear. With a few exceptions, theDutch radio stations are all the nicest boy in the class, nothing reallystands out in the field of entertainment, noise, craftsmanship or excitingmatters. Veronica who are going to broadcast from a train, is that what wehave to do with in 2022? Fortunately, there is still Eddy Keur, on both NPORadio 2 and 3FM!

Let’s take a professional look at what makes the Keurbaas, on Friday afternoonon 3FM and last week as a replacement for Ruud ‘hakkel en lispel’ de Wild, sounique that other (young) jocks could take an example from. Just compare ashow by Ruud de Wild to that of Eddy Keur, what a difference and what asadness that amateur painter brings every afternoon. Give that important timeto your replacement if you clearly don’t feel like it anymore Ruud.

Eddie dares If you hear Keur in conversation with a fellow jock, file reader or listener,he doesn’t shy away from turning something boring like traffic information ora crosstalk with Gijs Staverman into something fun. By a little joke, acomment, a sound effect, whatever. Good radio is entertainment, you are notthere just to have fun with your colleagues, you are there to entertain thelistener and Eddy understands that like no other.

Eddie is standing Keur, unlike his lazy sidekicks, newscaster or fellow jocks who insist onsitting, stands on his radio shows. He knows that things should be asenergetic as possible and partly because of that, he swings the pan, the wholethree hours. Does not poop, breathes better and can therefore make longersentences.

Eddie makes contact Have you ever noticed how few jocks actually connect with their listener, evenwhen they have someone like that on the phone? The aforementioned Stavermanalso has such a hand. Talking a little autistic over the listener’s head, evenwhen you’re talking to him or her on the phone. My God how embarrassing tohear that is always the case. Eddy listens, feels like a listener, gives himjust enough space and ensures that they once again turn it into entertainmenttogether. And he doesn’t even need the voxpro for that, he does it all live.

Eddy knows the difference is in the details design. One uses it to promote themselves all the time, the other to give theshow that extra sauce. Because it is not a SHOW for nothing. I heard that Keurhad been busy collecting the right jingles, beds, sweepers and sound effectsfor that one new Friday afternoon show months in advance. And that pays off. What energy and what cohesion. This is what radio was invented for. Nothingold-fashioned, the people who treat the medium so cowardly and dare nothing, that’s only back to the 1970s.

Eddie is herself It’s always easier said than done: being yourself on the radio. But Keur isreally EXACTLY the same in real life when you see him on the radio. Iinterviewed him once and was a guest on his NH radio show: he doesn’t play apersonality, he IS a personality. On air and off air.

Eddy has a large vocabulary I’ll translate that word: Eddy has a large vocabulary. You won’t hear himboringly read a message, he tells it in his own words. For example, I recentlyheard the word ‘ejaculate’ on him on the show, in connection with a fin whale.Think again about the average jock, who would have just read the message andthen start the TV tune of Flipper. Keur understands that language is the mostimportant tool with which you bring radio to life!

Eddie makes everything of himself Big tip from the better radio books in America: ‘make it your own’. Make ityours. Eddy approaches everything he does in his shows the Eddy way. Don’t beput off by the format, the obligatory songs, actions, etc. This keeps italways sounding fresh and new.

Eddie is preparing well The best radio shows sound like they’re being pulled out of the box, butthey’re prepared down to the last detail. Keur puts in the necessary time itsounds like, but not too much. He stands like a conductor in the orchestra pitwith his fellow musicians making it a vibrant whole.

Eddie has timing Keur moves along with really everything that can be heard. Whether it’s anintro, a bed, a disaster or a backsell. His voice, timing and pronunciationmatch what you hear in the background. It coincides. Listen to 538 for a dayand you will regularly hear jocks talking in a LOW voice over a HYPER bed. Orjust keep talking staccato in the intro to a song by Maan as by David Guetta. It doesn’t mix, it doesn’t sauce, doesn’t sound and that’s why it quicklybecomes irritating. Not to mention what De Wild is doing there everyafternoon, that trick has now really been worked out in 2022.

And so on And so I can go on sticking feathers up Keur’s ass for a while. It’s nice tosee (and hear) how much he stirs up with the average jock and listener. Tocritics I would say let’s not turn things around, this is not ‘old fashioned’,this is what radio is for. First dare to make a radio show so energetic, creative, involved and enthusiastic, only then can you criticize those fewjocks who can and dare to make it like this. What they do go wrong with 3FM,by the way, is to immediately launch a gigantic advertising campaign for thosenew guys in the morning with ‘listen the best morning show’. The listenerdecides for himself, what is nice and what is not, you don’t get that forcedon them.

Check out Eddy’s own YouTube channel, where he regularly posts compilations ofhis radio shows. Can you judge for yourself whether what I write above istrue. And if De Wild is smart, he doesn’t see Eddy as a competitor, but itwakes him up to rediscover the love for our beautiful medium.
