A woman who accused Armie Hammer of sexual assault is now speaking out againstthe actor’s estranged wife, Elizabeth Chambers, following an interview inwhich Chambers said she supported her husband’s efforts to prioritize his“healing.”

Speaking to E! News, Chambers confirmed that she has moved on to a “committedrelationship” with wellness therapist Ricardas Kazinec, though her divorcefrom Hammer has not yet been finalized. Still, she emphasized that she and the“Social Network” actor are “in a great place” and “talk all the time” as theylearn to co-parent their two children.

“Kids need their mom; kids need their dad,” Chambers said. “So there’s nothingwe won’t do.” She went on to note that Hammer “has been focused on hishealing” and that she’s “here to support that process.”

On Wednesday, however, Hammer’s accuser ― identified only as Effie ― shared aseries of screenshots to her “House of Effie” Instagram account that appear toshow messages sent by Chambers encouraging her to go public with her assaultallegations against Hammer.

“He’s truly a psychopath,” one of the messages reads. “And he’s never beenwith kids all day. Ever.”

In a separate message, Chambers allegedly tells Effie that she needed Hammerto “leave” the Cayman Islands, where the actor’s family relocated as theallegations against him continued to mount.

“I forced him to come here via court order to try and be a father and now he’sa risk to them,” the message reads. “He needs to go. Had a few days with them, but then drunk/high/violent.”

According to People, Effie concluded her series of Instagram stories ― many ofwhich can be found here ― with a note that read: “Just some things to keep inmind before anyone else keeps wishing rapists ‘healing.’”

In an email statement to HuffPost, a representative for Chambers dismissed theimplication that Chambers had urged Effie to come forward.

“Given the extent and nature of allegations that were made, Elizabeth soughtto determine the veracity of those allegations. She was very sensitive to allparties involved,” the statement read. “The safety and well-being of theirchildren remains her priority.”

Hammer’s professional life was thrown in a tailspin last year when “House ofEffie” posted screenshots of messages that appeared to have been sent from theactor’s account that included references to violent sexual acts andcannibalism.

Though Hammer denied the claims, the controversy that ensued prompted him towithdraw from a number of high-profile projects, like the Jennifer Lopezcomedy “Shotgun Wedding” and the Broadway production of “The Minutes.”

About two months after the messages were posted, Effie came forward at a newsconference organized by her former attorney, Gloria Allred. She accused Hammerof having raped her in 2017, and said that the two were in a four-yearrelationship that ended sometime in 2020.

Shortly afterward, Hammer checked himself into a treatment facility to addressissues related to drugs, alcohol and sex. He has maintained a low profile formost of 2022, and in July was reportedly seen working at a hotel resort in theCayman Islands.

The accusations leveled against Hammer by Effie and other women are examinedin-depth in a Discovery+ docuseries, “House of Hammer,” released last month.

Sahar (★★★★): A gold-coated diamond

For nearly three years, Tamino seemed to have disappeared from the face of theearth. You could call it a somewhat disturbing disappearance, were it not forthe fact that the reason for that isolation was a new record. With “Habibi”,the Antwerp native with Egyptian roots quickly conquered a lot of hearts andpeople abroad were not cold to Tamino’s music either. debut album _amir_turned out to be a bull’s eye and so expectations for that dreaded secondalbum were very high. When the silence was broken with “The First Disciple” itimmediately became clear that the return of the artist would be one throughthe big gate.

Tamino’s success formula remains broadly the same as on amir ; rich, warmvocals on a bed of sounds that seek the balance between east and west. Yet wehear on sahara immediately a more mature artist. It all seems a lot morethoughtful, as if the words have been weighed and weighed countless times, only to return to a very pure and honest version. We didn’t expect less thanthat, if you know that Tamino has had a number of years for this. Themelancholic sound that forms the common thread through the record comes fromthe Ud, an Arabic instrument that he learned to play under the mentorship of aSyrian refugee.

That time resounds richly throughout the work sahara. “The Longing”immediately takes us to the Middle East where everything is just a bit moregraceful and warmer. Tamino sounds like the sun setting over a vast valley, while the last warmth left in the air drapes itself like a blanket over yourshoulders. That melancholic landscape continues on “The Flame”, a song thatinitially has many layers, but quickly returns to the essence. It is preciselyin those instrumental parts, where different instruments seem to flowtogether, that a kind of extra dimension is given to the music.

As if sahara as a whole is not a wonderful gift, we also get to hear a duetwith Angèle. Whether Tamino really needed that feature to put his album in thespotlight, we don’t know, but we’re very happy with it anyway. Angèle venturesinto English, which is, as always, the official language of Tamino’s music, thus creating an additional fragility. The dynamics between the two aresomewhat reminiscent of Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue on “Where The Wild RosesGrow”, but as beautiful as the verses alone are, it’s the chorus that createspure magic. The strings provide the melancholy that all too often keeps uscompany at this time of year.

on sahara is brought the same musical quality as on amir and so you couldsay that there aren’t really any big surprises on the record, although inTamino’s case that might be what we’re most thankful for. The artist knows howto reinforce his own sound in this way and we can only appreciate that.Contrary to the other songs, “Cinnamon” has a slightly more uptempo chorusthat will certainly appeal to the general public. It all sounds a little lessheavy, without really losing that typical Tamino factor. The timelessness andlived-in life that we so associate with the Antwerp resident is reflected insongs such as “Only Our Love” or “My Dearest Friend and Enemy”, where on thelatter sunbeams gently break through the melancholic cloud cover to give theend something less painful and heavy.

After ten enchanting songs the journey comes through sahara to an end andjust like with holidays that leave a deep impression, we enjoy the peace for awhile, but we like to leave as soon as possible. Luckily for us, that secondTamino record is now ours forever and we could return at any moment to abubble where reality seems to be an illusion. If you want to see Tamino liveat work, you can do so on December 2 and 3 in Paradiso, Amsterdam and onDecember 5, 6 and 7 in the Royal Circus in Brussels. If you don’t have ticketsfor one of these shows yet, then you have to rely on Ticketswap and speed, because Tamino managed to sell out all the dates in no time.

Sharon Osbourne says firing from ‘The Talk’ amid racism claims ‘destroyed my credibility in America’

Sharon Osbourne has harsh words — and an obscene gesture — for those involvedin her firing from The Talk .

The topic — as well as other ups and downs she’s endured during her time inthe spotlight as a TV host, reality star and manager — is the subject of a FoxNation docuseries titled, _Sharon Osbourne: To Hell & Back _which debutsMonday. Osbourne gets real with Yahoo Entertainment about being cut from theEmmy-winning CBS daytime talk show after 11 seasons amid a racism controversy, and says she’ll probably never work again in the US after being what she deems”canceled.” She and husband Ozzy recently announced they’re moving back totheir native England.

“I was thinking to myself: This is gonna be it,” she recalls of her March 2021firing. “Over 50 years working in this industry and this is going to be it.This is it. I’m gonna go out as a racist? I found it so heartbreaking. And itwas like: Why, why did this happen? Why? “

While retelling her side of the story in the four-part doc — about defendingher friend Piers Morgan after he accused Meghan Markle of fabricatingallegations of racism from within the British royal family — The Osbournes_alum is at her most candid. She fires off f-bombs at those she says wrongedher, literally gives the finger to CBS and reminds us that the network isimperfect, citing, in explicit terms, former CEO Les Moonves (and husband ofher former _The Talk co-host Julie Chen)’s sexual misconduct scandal. Shetells us all she has left is her truth having lost her job and credibilitywhen CBS’s internal investigation determined her behavior “did not align with[company] value.”

“Let’s be truthful about this: They destroyed my credibility in America,” shesays. “Let’s be really truthful. It’s like: I have nothing to be afraid of.Their allegations were wrong and were twisted and distorted.”

Osbourne, who says she wasn’t repentant enough for the network, continues, “Weweren’t dealing with a company that runs, you know, religious programming. This company is like every other — ruthless — and will do whatever they haveto do to not have any stain on their network [don’t want] anything that’sgoing to rock the boat…”

Story continues

Asked if she considered suing CBS, she tells us, “Sure I could have. But do Iwant to waste two, three years of my life on them? No, I don’t want to dothat. For what?” She also scoffs as reports she left the network with apayout. She says she got “nothing… a ‘see ya.’ It was like in the movies whenpeople get let go [and] you take out your box full of stuff. That was it.”

The boat was rocked when Osbourne backed Morgan who suggested Markle song inher infamous Oprah Winfrey interview. The Markle-Prince Harry interview alsoaired on CBS, with the network investing a lot of money into it. The next day,Osbourne’s co-hosts Sheryl Underwood and Elaine Welteroth accused her on-airof unconscious racism, which Osbourne claimed show producers and CBSexecutives put them up to. Welteroth, who later left the show, and herhairstylist later filed complaints alleging a “racially insensitive andhostile environment” on the set, leading to the show going on hiatus so CBScould conduct an internal investigation. During that time, Leah Remini, a co-host of Osbourne’s in Season 1, Osbourne claimed used derogatory languagetoward co-host Sara Gilbert, who is a lesbian, and Chen, who is of Chinesedescent. Osbourne maintained she wasn’t racist and denied using slurs againstChen.

Osbourne invited Underwood and Welteroth to appear in her doc, but theydeclined. She is clearly hurt by what she views as Underwood’s betrayal, having considered her a close friend as they worked side-by-side for 10seasons. The doc details that friendship, talking about Underwood visitingOsbourne in the UK and referring to herself as “the Black Osbourne” in a 2018podcast interview with the Osbourne family. While Underwood recently said shemissed Osbourne, Osbourne tells us she’ll never makeup with her.

“Never. No. Never ever,” she replies. “Why? Why would I? I worked withsomebody for all those years, sat beside her, traveled the world with her, laughed, cried with her. No, because she’s not a friend.”

For the record, Osbourne remains friends with former co-host Carrie Ann Inaba, who defends her in the doc, as well as Amanda Kloots, who remains on the showwith Underwood and three new co-hosts. “Mrs. O” is also pals with Gilbert, whoshe speaks with often, and says any comments she made about her were notmalicious.

“The thing was, I would say those comments on the air to Sara,” she says.”That’s how stupid they are. That’s how bloody stupid. It’s something betweenSara and me.”

Asked if she’s spoken to Remini, who surfaced the claims, she says, “No, but Iwouldn’t because she frightens me. Because she’s cray-cray… So I would _never_talk to her.”

The doc was made by Osbourne’s son Jack’s production company. He’s in it aswell as Ozzy, daughter Kelly and Osbourne’s friends, who talk about how deeplyhurt she was by the racist allegations. She’s suffered depression in theaftermath, undergoing ketamine therapy, with Jack saying she’s still “fragile”from it.

Osbourne says she was bothered her family was dragged into the “absoluteinsanity” of it all. Not only did she get death threats — leading to herhiring security — but the trolling extended to her family.

“It didn’t hurt me about me. I know what I am,” she says. “But when theystarted on my kids and my husband, it was like — now this is ridiculous. Nowthis is absolute insanity. And that got me really, really angry.”

Even her pets got death threats, she says. “They gonna cut their throats? It’slike: You idiots. You morons out there. But these morons can affect you.Unfortunately, it’s the world we live in.”

This whole experience is partially behind her and Ozzy’s recent announcementthat they’re moving back to England from LA, which has been their home basefor 30 years. He’s called “school shootings and massacres” in the US for themove, while she’s said she also doesn’t feel safe. But the UK is also wherethe work is amid The Talk fallout. Earlier this year, Osbourne joined Morganon his UK TalkTV show, which is also, confusingly, named The Talk. She andOzzy will also be making a BBC reality show, Home to Roost , about theirmove back to the English countryside, where they’ve kept a home. It’s alsowhere Osbourne wants to grow old with the Prince of Darkness.

“I mean, look, [England is] where I was born,” she says. “It’s my home. I’vealways been proud to be British. I’ve never ever been one of these people thatwent to America and then had a Mid-Atlantic accent. I’ve always stayed true towho I am. And it’s just works out for us that way right now [to return].”

After all, “I’m also working on Ozzy’s movie, which is coming out through SonyPictures, and I’ve got so many things that I’m doing,” she says, citing Ozzy’sfirst No. 1 on Billboard’s top album chart this week. “And I can do it fromanywhere. I don’t need to be in LA”

Besides, “I don’t think anyone will ever take me back in America,” Osbournesays a year-and-a-half later after the axing. “I don’t think they will.”

The four part docuseries, ** Sharon Osbourne: To Hell & Back,**premieres Monday on Fox Nation.

Netflix incites anger with dark film about murder case

Coming on October 19 The Stranger out, a thriller about a murder case thatimmediately stands out. The family of the victim on which the film is based isfurious that Netflix is going to release the film.

Netflix has dethroned HBO as king of the in recent years true crime. Thedocumentaries are flying around you.

Netflix presents The Stranger

For example, a documentary series will be released in October with never-before-seen recordings of conversations with the serial killer, necrophile andcannibal Jeffrey Dahmer.

It doesn’t stop there as far as Dahmer is concerned. WandaVision star EvanPeters will also play the serial killer in a Netflix series called Dahmer –Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story for which the first trailer was releasedlast week.

Coming in the same month The Stranger from. Not a documentary but a filmabout a crime case, directed by the Australian actor and film director ThomasM. Wright. The film will be released on the streaming service on October 19,but the project is already causing considerable controversy.

Criminal Network and Obi-Wan Kenobi

The thriller follows two men who do not know each other, but whose lives cometogether in a blood-curdling way. Henry Teague, played by Sean Harris, is asuspect in an unsolved missing person case. The other man is an undercover copplayed by Obi-Wan Kenobi ‘s Joel Edgerton.

His character is part of a small group of secret agents who have infiltrated adark criminal network. Their goal? Catching a killer who’s been on the run foreight years.

That’s already a recipe for an exciting thriller, but what The Stranger Whatis intriguing on paper is the fact that the film is largely based on a real-life murder case.

True story and controversy

We’re talking about the kidnapping and murder of Daniel Morcombe, a 13-year-old schoolboy who was kidnapped at a bus stop in 2003. It was one of the most_high profile_ affairs in Australia’s recent history. Only after a long undercover operation, the killer was found and arrested.

Then you wonder what makes this film so controversial. Well, the family of themurdered Australian boy is anything but happy with Netflix’s project. In fact, they claim that everyone involved is blatantly profiting from the case, without showing any respect for their son.

Distasteful, morally corrupt

Or, as his father summed up to ABC Australia: “We think this is the mostdistasteful, the most hurtful and of no use to society at all”.

Daniel Morcombe’s mother is also furious.

“Individuals who make money from a heinous crime are parasites. They areheartless and disrespectful to Daniel, the DMF and the Morcombe family. Wefind the making of the film morally corrupt and cruel. You should be ashamedof yourself,” said the victim’s mother on Twitter.

To be continued…

Oh dear. If every family of homicide victims reacted like this, HBO andNetflix’s movie and series libraries would be a lot smaller. At the same time,it is of course their right.

For now, the release of the film is still going ahead. The Stranger will bereleased in Australian cinemas on October 6, followed by streaming worldwideon October 19 on Netflix.

Is Taylor Swift Playing the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show?

When the NFL announced at midnight ET that Apple Music is the new sponsor ofthe Super Bowl Halftime Show, the Swift-iverse went into overdrive speculatingthat Taylor Swift will be the performer: The announcement was made atmidnight, Taylor releases her new music at midnight (er, like 99% of all majorartists in the streaming age) and her new album is called “Midnights.”

With no disrespect to the Swifties, there are actually many more-tangiblereasons why Swift seems a likely front-runner for the Super Bowl Halftime Show— which, with an estimated 103 million viewers this year, is the singlelargest platform for a music artist in the entire world.

More from Variety

First off, “Midnights” drops on Oct. 21 — and will almost inevitably befollowed by a major tour. Swift was scheduled to do a major global stadiumtour in 2020 in support of her 2019 album “Lover.” Obviously, due to thepandemic, it was limited to a single preliminary performance in Paris inSeptember of 2019, “City of Lover,” which aired on ABC and remains her lastlive performance. Remarkably, “Midnights” will be the sixth album Swift willhave released in just over three years: It joins “Lover,” her two pandemic-eraalbums “Folklore” and “Evermore,” and her two “Taylor’s Version” re-recordingsof “Red” and “Fearless” — the rights to which, along with her four otherpre-“Lover” albums, were sold in Scooter Braun’s controversial acquisition ofthe Big Machine Records catalog. Needless to say, she’s got a lot of materialto air.

All of which dovetails into the fact that the Super Bowl is more-often-than-not used as a teaser for a major tour.

Yet a less-obvious reason lies in the Apple Music announcement — or, rather, the fact that Pepsi announced that it would not renew its ten-year-longsponsorship of the Halftime show this year. The sponsorship began in 2013 —the same year that Swift launched a long partnership with Pepsi’s decades-longarch-rival Coca-Cola. While sources reported that Swift’s deal with Cokeprohibited her from playing a Pepsi-sponsored Halftime show, whether or not itdid, it would have been awkward. (Of course, there was Swift’s 2015 criticismof the then-new streaming service about the fact that it wasn’t payingroyalties on music played in trial versions, but it quickly changed the policyand was even the exclusive streaming platform for her music until 2017.)

Story continues

Finally, there’s a more complex matter: After years of criticism about itshandling of race-related issues that climaxed with Colin Kaepernick’seffective banishment from professional football, the National Football Leaguemade a strong effort to change the narrative by striking a long-termpartnership in 2019 with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation organization on entertainment —including the halftime show. The past three years have featured entertainersof color almost exclusively: Jennifer Lopez and Shakira (2020), the Weeknd(2021) and this year’s multi-artist classic hip-hop extravaganza, helmed byDr. Dre and featuring Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and50 Cent, with Anderson .Paak on drums. While Swift is obviously a white woman, the past three years have gone a long way toward addressing the problem, andit seems possible that she would bring in performers of color to join her(although we won’t hold our breath waiting for Kendrick Lamar to reprise hisperformance on Swift’s “Bad Blood” remix).

And finally, three sources close to tell the situation variety that it’shappening.

Reps for Swift, Roc Nation and the NFL did not immediately respond to_variety_ ‘s requests for comment.

Colleen Hoover is queen of the best sellers list. Who is she and why are her books so popular?

There has never been an author who has dominated the USA TODAY Best-SellingBooks list week after week like Colleen Hoover has in 2022. Sure, otherauthors have had multiple titles appear on the best seller list for multipleweeks, but they have all fallen well short of Hoover, who boasted a total of15 titles in a single week this summer. Three of her books, “Reminders ofHim,” “It Ends With Us” and “Verity,” have taken the No. 1 spot so far thisyear.

Hoover has managed to write half of the Top 10 books in sales this year. Overthe past 10 years, she has gone from self-published newbie to bestsellingpowerhouse. And there is no sign of her slowing down. Hoover’s next novel, “ItStarts With Us,” the follow-up to her best selling “It Ends With Us,” is setto publish Oct. 18.

So just who is Colleen Hoover, and how did she and her novels get so popular?

Who is Colleen Hoover?

Colleen Hoover, 42, lives in a small town in east Texas just outside SulfurSprings. She worked for several years as a social worker before becoming acounselor at WIC, a nutrition program for women, children and infants. Whileat WIC, Hoover began to pursue her writing career. She would write on a laptopborrowed from her mother during her off hours, often while one of her sons wasat play rehearsals. She gave the novel to her mother as a Christmas gift, andnot long after, she self-published it to share with friends and family.”Slammed” (2012) would become her first published novel and her first book toappear on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list. In total, she has written 22novels and three novellas, and contributed to two anthologies.

What types of books does Colleen Hoover write?

Hoover’s books fall into new adult and young adult genres. The subject mattervaries. For instance, the author’s interest in slam poetry heavily influenced”Slammed.” Both the “Slammed” and the “Hopeless” series were inspired byHoover’s social work career.

But Hoover has explored different genres in her novels. For example, herinterest in the paranormal led her to write “Layla,” in which the titlecharacter survives a life-threatening attack, after which inexplicable thingsstart happening around her. Hoover also has written thrillers and love storieswith twists and turns involving heartbreak and mental health struggles.

Which Colleen Hoover book should you read first?

“It Ends With Us” is one of Hoover’s most popular and well-received novels, and a good starting point. It has been the highest-ranking novel of Hoover’son the bestsellers list in anticipation of its sequel, “It Starts With Us,”which arrives Oct. 18.

Many of Hoover’s plot lines involve emotionally intense situations includingsexual assault, surviving trauma, infertility and abusive relationships. Ifyou want to start out with something less intense, try “Maybe Someday.” Foryoung adult fans, the “Slammed” series, “Regretting You” and “Without Merit”are good choices.

While Hoover has steadily had bestsellers since her debut on USA TODAY’s list, her popularity has exploded in the past two years. Her sales surge can beattributed in part to her massive popularity on TikTok, particularly in theplatform’s #booktok subculture. Publishers Weekly chronicled the phenomenonwhen Hoover’s 2016 book “It Ends With Us” started climbing the bestsellerslists in 2020.

Fifteen of Hoover’s novels are on this week’s list; “It Ends With Us” topsthem all at No. 2. The novel, which has reached No. 1 before, has been on thelist for a total of 76 weeks. Her latest novel, “Reminders of Him,” now on thelist, debuted at No. 1 in January.

OM is investigating Baudet’s report about ‘liquidation comment’ by Johan Derksen show

no excusesThe Public Prosecution Service in The Hague is investigating whetherJohan Derksen has made a punishable statement with his liquidation remarkabout Thierry Baudet. The Public Prosecution Service is responding to a reportthat the foreman of Forum for Democracy leader has made of a threat. This isnot an in-depth investigation, but a short assessment, emphasizes aspokesperson.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, this is a standard procedure if athreat to a politician is reported. The Public Prosecution Service will theninform Baudet whether, in the opinion of the Public Prosecution Service, itmakes sense to file a complaint against Derksen.

Even if the Public Prosecution Service gives a negative advice, the Forum forDemocracy leader can still decide to file a complaint. The Public ProsecutionService cannot say how long the investigation into the report will take.

‘They have to liquidate it’

Derksen said in Wednesday evening Today Inside about the Forum for Democracyleader that ‘they need to liquidate that guy’. Presenter Wilfred Genee jokedimmediately after Derksen’s comment: “Can this still be cut out?”

The same evening, FvD suggested preparing a declaration on social media forthe much-discussed comment. That report has not yet been filed. A report hasbeen received at the Public Prosecution Service in The Hague. “We are nowgoing to take a closer look at that. We are going to see what exactly was saidand whether this is a criminal statement.” Derksen has not yet been contactedat this stage, the spokesperson says.

“If he’s that stupid…”

Derksen said immediately after the comment that it was a slip of the tongue. In his own words, he meant ‘that they should kick Baudet out of the Chamber’.Derksen is convinced that Baudet does not stand a chance if he decides toproceed with the report. His co-host Wilfred Genee showed how many differentmeanings the word liquidate can have.

“If he is stupid enough to file a complaint, a lawyer will come with the VanDale and say: well, just say it,” Derksen said. The football analyst calls it’staggering, the noise that arises. It seems as if half of the Netherlands iswaiting for someone to say something that you can put your finger on’.

Security due to threats

RTL Boulevard stated on Thursday that Wilfred Genee walked to his car at theMedia Park with two security guards because of threats. SBS6 does not want tocomment on this news on Thursday evening. “Due to security reasons, we cannotanswer questions related to security,” said a spokesperson.

SBS6 previously called Derksen’s comment a slip of the tongue. It was acomment that “he immediately recovered and to which he returned later in thebroadcast,” a spokesperson for the TV station said when asked.

Derksen is not going to apologize to Baudet. Opposite RTL Boulevard Derksenmaintains that it was a slip of the tongue and that therefore he sees noreason to say sorry. ,,I do not apologise, I have done nothing wrong”, saysDerksen. “People who have seen it, have seen that it was a slip of the tongueand that I immediately repaired it,” says Derksen. “It doesn’t affect me. Idon’t give a shit. They just file a report. Then I’ll get a lawyer and he’llhandle it.”

‘This is not possible’

Broadcasters: something must be done quickly with ON, after ’embarrassing’ broadcast

However critical and indignant the broadcasters are about the broadcast offellow broadcaster ON on September 15, they do not agree with the statement ofthe director of KRO-NCRV, Peter Kuipers, in NRC that ON must be immediatelyremoved from the order. Instead, they are urging State Secretary Gunay Uslu(Media, D66), the NPO and the Media Authority to speak out quickly on theissue and take any necessary measures.

ON caused a wave of criticism last week by broadcasting the program Unheardof News alleged to address “racist aggression” by black people against whitepeople. A series of videos was shown in which a black man repeatedly beat up awhite man or woman. According to an investigation by Pointer (KRO-NCRV), thereis no evidence that there was a racist motive. The n-word was also usedseveral times in the ON broadcast.

“This was pure racism,” says Jan Slagter, director of Omroep MAX. “ON hasdisqualified me. But do they have to be immediately removed from the order? That is not up to the directors of broadcasters, but up to the State Secretaryand the Media Authority. I’m finally expecting a decision. I honestly thoughtthat the group that feels unheard of in the Netherlands would get a voice inthe system with ON – and that’s the best way to push the boundaries. But theyhave crossed the border, this is not acceptable.”

EO director Arjan Lock, who is also chairman of the Board of Broadcasters (inwhich all national broadcasters have a seat), says that he senses indignationamong all broadcasters. “First: It cannot be the case that discriminatory orracist expressions are made under the flag of the NPO. And two: we wouldadhere to the journalistic code. If you broadcast five videos under the guiseof wanting to show black racism, and the first investigation shows that therewas no connection with racism, then you are breaking the code.

“Something has to happen. And I completely sympathize with what Kuipers says. But: diversity is also a great asset. And that requires careful action beforeyou use big words like: this broadcaster must be removed from the systemimmediately. Because it is not just about this one case, but also about othercases in the future. Do you want something completely different going on, andpeople say: that sound has to stop, which can also be said: directly from theorder?

The Media Authority is investigating the matter and has informed the ANP thatit expects to be ready in the second quarter of next year.

Lennart van der Meulen, director of the VPRO, also believes that it is not upto the broadcasters to put ON on hold. “If other broadcasters were to say thatVPRO should be removed from the system because of a controversial documentary,I would also find that terrible. That is not so much a question ofcollegiality, but of freedom of expression. We think the racist expressions atON and the fomenting of prejudices are the worst. You can file a complaintagainst that, but that is not in the way of the VPRO.”

Van der Meulen points out that in addition to removing ON from the order, there is also a less far-reaching alternative. “The NPO can also say: we nolonger place this program on the broadcast schedule. That is always possible.”

No Black Pete news

Just this Friday, the NPO confirmed that another ON program, the alternative_Sinterklaas news_ with the title Black Pete Journal , will not be shown ontelevision this year. In the Black Pete Journal which was broadcast onYouTube last year, the Pieten are painted black, while the NPO has decidedtogether with NTR for a number of years. Sinterklaas news broadcast in whichno black Petes can be seen anymore.

“This can go two ways,” says NTR director Willemijn Francissen about therecent fuss about ON. “Unheard of Netherlands is out of the order. OrOngehoord Nederland will adhere to the agreements and remain within theframework. The latter is clearly my preference, but I find it difficult to behopeful about that.

“ON has been given a place in the system because it represents a group thatotherwise would not feel heard by the public broadcaster, while as animportant institution within democracy we are expected to let everyone havetheir say. But discrimination, racism, insults and hate speech are simply notallowed, especially not within public broadcasting. We are ashamed that this

Opposite RTL Boulevard Derksenmaintains that it was a slip of the tongue and that therefore he sees noreason to say sorry. ,,I do not apologise, I have done nothing wrong”, saysDerksen. “People who saw it, saw that it was a slip of the tongue and that Iimmediately repaired it,” says Derksen. “It doesn’t affect me. I don’t give ashit. They just file a report. Then I’ll get a lawyer and he’ll handle it.”
